Wow, it's been too long since I've reviewed a beer. In fact, it's been long time since I bought this beer. Seriously, it's been sitting in my parent's basement refridgerator for almost a year now. I have to admit I am a little bit surprised that this beer tastes so good, but I suppose a beer style invented for the long-haul to India can survive a year in the downstairs fridge.
Looks good. Bright, light orange-brown with a decent head and appropriate lacing.
Smells good. Citrus and bitter, good indication of the taste to come.
Tastes OK. It doesn't seem to taste as distinct as the smell would lead you to believe, but it's not bad. Light, sweet, and hoppy, but nothing seems to stand out.
Mouthfeel is alright. Again, it doesn't stand out in any way. Could be the extra aging that dampened the bite, but to me IPAs should fill the mouth with tons of sensation, and this just kinda goes down without provoking too much inspiration.
It is pretty drinkable though. I only have one, but I can tell that an evening of Hoptical Illusions would be enjoyable. Maybe because it is not overly bitter or sweet, its balance is an enjoyable retreat from the over-the-top IPAs I've grown to love.
