Part of a mixed 12 pack. Brewed with "a rare hop grown exclusively on a small farm in Oregon. One taste and you’ll understand why we bought the entire crop. Our Hoptical Illusion IPA is brewed with a generous amount of this select hop that’s added five different ways for maximum hop flavor." No other ingredients listed. OG=1.064, 60 IBU’s, 6.8% ABV.
Pours out to a sparkingly clear deep golden, forming a tall white creamy head with excellent retention and solid sticky sheets of lace. Carbonation is moderate, ~2.5 carbs. Appears filtered. The nose has a mild fruity and grapefruity hop nose with a hint of toffee, but more in the line with a pale ale than an IPA. Mouthfeel is medium. Kinda lighter bodied compared to other IPAs. Taste opens with grapefruit and a hint of mango, followed by a pleasantly sweet malt body, suggestions of grain husk and biscuits. Moderately firm bitterness lingers in the aftertaste. No perceptible off-flavors, but I don't really dig their yeast...kinda has that Dogfishhead character that I'm not a fan of.
An average beer, and an average IPA. It doesn't really do much for me. After sampling the 4 beers in this 12 pack, I'm not inclined to buy their stuff again.
