I visited the Brewery the other day--highly recommended.

I sampled just about everything they had on tap (leaving aside the one's I had before or styles I didn't care for too much). This was the one I wanted to take home in a growler.

A fine copper appearance with a healthy head and plenty of lacing. Balanced and drinkable with nice malts all the way through and enough hops to please an IPA hound.

Here in NYC, I see the Toasted Lager around all the time and the Hoptical Illusion can be found on tap or cask pretty often. But this I have never seen on tap around the City. If it was I'd be sure to go for it.

Maybe a little too hoppy to meet the definition of a Pale Ale (hence the lower drinkability score) but I wouldn't change a thing!

A - Three fingers of off-white head, somewhat large bubbles, over a cloudy pale amber body. The head recedes fairly quickly but leaves nice lacing.

S - Lots of citrus and pine.

T - Nice big citrus, pine and floral hops as the smell suggests, followed by toasted malts.

M - Medium body with moderate/high carbonation. Somewhat thin, this starts to border on soda-like.

O - Not a bad pale ale, very drinkable. I'd love to get this in cans but it's not bold enough for me to buy in bombers. The flavors are good but not so complex and the mouthfeel is a bit thin and soda-like. If I see this in cans I'd definitely pick it up again.

Bomber says "extremely FRESH craft brewed," which is kind of moot considering there's no bottling date, but eh. I'm trying not to jump on that bandwagon.
Poured from bomber into DFH spiegelau IPA glass. Translucent golden-orange with a huge pillowy white head that breaks after a bit, leaving spotty chunky lacing and a thick puck of foam in the center with looser foam around the sides, and the whole lot slowly descends into the beer, leaving more lacing as it does.
Smells of nutty malt, with notes of grassy/earthy hops. Relatively simple smell, hopefully the taste delivers more.
Taste does in fact deliver more. Starts out with that same nutty malt, lovely complexity between the nuttiness and the clear malt. Hop flavor is subtle; grassy hops with slight citrus rind and earthy bitterness.
Mouthfeel is smooth and medium-thin.
Overall, I enjoy the complexity of the malt in this pale ale, but the hop flavor could be a bit more complex and present.

S: Slight bready sweetness with a pleasant fruity hoppiness in the background.

L: Slight, hazy burnt orange. Creamy white head that dissipates slightly. Great lacing.

T: Light bready sweetness with a slight resiny and fruity hop taste. Medium spicy bitterness with a fairly clean maltiness into the finish. Finishes semi-dry and hoppy.

M: Medium bodied, medium carbonation.

Solid pale ale. Not much more needs to be said.
