A: clear; a touch lighter than cola brown - SRM approx. 18-19; 1 finger khaki head that receded slowly to a thin, uneven cap; the whole glass was virtually a single sheet of lace;

S: nutmeg, all spice, and molasses;

T: after the nose, a surprising balance between malt (molasses) and hops (citrus and earthy); finish is moderately bitter and a bit harsh;

M: medium bodied; coats the mouth; moderate carbonation; dry finish;

O: a nice winter beer; pairing with food would minimize the harshness of the finish;

dark amber in color. Aroma of coffee and chocolate. Slightly bitter at first but flavorful. Great with an evening meal.

12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 10/17/2012. Pours slightly hazy deep reddish copper color with a 1-2 finger dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice dense soapy lacing clings around the glass, with some light streaming carbonation. Aromas of caramel, toffee, toast, raisin, plum, fig, brown sugar, brown bread, light chocolate, herbal, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/bready malt, fruity yeast, and light earthy hop notes; with solid strength. Taste of big caramel, toffee, toast, dark bread, brown sugar, raisin, plum, fig, light chocolate, herbal, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Light amount of herbal/roast bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of caramel, toast, toffee, dark bread, brown sugar, raisin, plum, fig, light chocolate, herbal, and toast/yeast earthiness. Nice complexity and robustness of dark/bready malt, fruity yeast, and earthy hop flavors; with a good bitterness/sweetness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a smooth and moderately creamy/bready mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with only a slight warming present after the finish. Overall this is a nice English amber ale, more of a winter warmer in my opinion. All around good robustness and balance of dark/bready malt, fruit yeast, and earthy hop flavors; and very smooth to sip on. A nicely enjoyable offering.
