Decent color and good head retention. Nice clear dark golden or light copper color. Reasonably mild characteristics, though a bit heavy for something associated with a "spring fling". I can't get around a metallic smell and taste I'm getting from it. I don't know if it's hydrolysis from bad grain, something from the brewing equipment or just poor water quality going into it. Whatever the case, nickel on the nose and on the tongue. I think it'd be a decent brew otherwise. (475 characters)

A: Copper, as stated on the bottle. Thin head and thin lacing. No haziness.

S: Smells like hops. Wasn't really expecting a pale ale since it's called a copper ale - which can also mean a malty beer. Anyways, floral and citrus hops mostly.

T: Spicy with a definite earthy tone. A tiny bit of a metallic taste on the back end.

M: Light bodied and smooth.

O: The initial taste was pretty nice but the finish killed it for me. Slightly like a macro with the metallic taste. Fix the finish on this and its a nice brew. Definitely will not buy this again combined with the fact that InBev is taking over Blue Point. (613 characters)

Reviewed on 8/9/08. On tap at the brewery. Pours orange with a small light tan head. Aroma of bitter rye seed. Flavor of rye and parmesean cheese with a bitter hops finish. Too bitter for me.

12oz bottle.

Poured a medium and clear amber color with an averaged sized off white head. Aromas of toastiness with some caramel. Tastes of the same toastiness and caramel. Not too much to this one. Body on the weaker side.

Served out of a bottle and poured into a chilled glass

A Has a nice amber color with a subtle creamy head.

S Slight malty aroma, not much else...I will wait a bit for this to warm up and see if there are any other notes.

T Has a sharp bitterness up front with a lingering bitter finish/ after taste. Not really to much to get excited about.

M A bit zinggy on the tounge

Overall this is an average beer. Spring ales are supposed to be too complex but I cant see myself drinking more than one or two of these. Probably more worth the try on a warm summer day. (562 characters)

Used to like this a lot more - not sure if my tastes have changed, or it has. Either way, this is still a decent Spring Copper Ale, but there is nothing special about it. (171 characters)

A - pours a clear reddish orange color with 1/4 inch of foam that quickly gave way to just a ring of bubbles on the surface

S - very sublte aroma, a little bit of grassiness and malts

T - mostly malts up front with the grassiness coming through midway to finish with a malty taste in the back of your mouth

M/D - nice carbonation and mouthfeel. overall not a bad tasting brew, probably not my first choice, but thats more the style than anything else (453 characters)

Bought on tap and from the looks of the lack of info on the site. It think it is on tap only.

appearance - Nice copper color, and a nice foamy head with some lacing.

smell - grainy and hoppy.

taste - Taste was sweet with a small touch of malt and then ended with a bitterness and hop flavor.

mouthfeel - light medium body with some carbination.

drinkability - Nice spring beer. I rated this average because I do not like beer that is bitter and taste like grapefruit. (487 characters)

Spring fling pours a clear copper colored body with a moderate sized, really light beige, yellow tinted head with average retention and lacing. Smells of light toasted bready malts and... thats it, maybe a hint of floral hops but I may be fooling myself.

Taste starts with bready and toasty malts, moving to light floral hops in the middle, with a caramel malt finish. Has a touch of a metallic aftertaste. Body is a bit heavier than average, carbonation is moderate, nice crisp finish. (487 characters)

A- Pours a nice translucent copper color with a finger width white head. Some thin lacing sticks to the glass.

S- I'm getting some slight citrus hop aromas with some bread like malts in the back. Aroma is very faint to me right now.

T- Decent hop bitterness with some citrus like flavors carrying threw. Also getting a decent malt character.Good balanced flavors create an easy drinking beer.

M- Body is on the lighter side with clean refreshing taste. Good beer choice for the warmer weather coming.

O - Solid beer with easy drinkabilty. Would definitely pick this one up again. Cheers! (593 characters)

12 oz. brown bottle.

A: Pours a clear copper color with a large foamy white head. Pretty good retention
and lacing.

S: Sweet malts and some dry floral hops. Overall pretty clean and crisp.

T/M: Starts with sweet malts and light floral hops. Good balance, might be a little
malt heavy. Chewy caramel, medium bodied with an easy crisp feel and a dry hoppy
aftertaste.

O: Not much to say other than it is a good ale. Tastes more like a British Pale Ale, than
an American one. Easy to drink but with little standing out in the taste. Still enjoyable,
but nothing I'd get again.

Cheers! (587 characters)

On-tap at Cole's. Some colour, a bit of hop aroma. But then too sweet to take seriously, though some citrus behind it. A lagerish version of orange punch? A bit above average mouthfeel, I believe from the use of brown sugar. Some drinkability to it, dessertish.Had it a year later on tap at Cole's again, and again its appearance and mouthfeel as strong points. (360 characters)

12 oz bottle poured into a snifter - Fridge - 2009

Appearance: Pours a copper color with orange highlights. The head rises 1/4" and is off-white. No retention at all, it goes away rather quickly. No lace either.

Smell: Cereal grain, toasted barley, and an earthy mushroom aroma.

Taste: Pinchy alcohol and carbonation. More cereal grain and maybe a tad bit of hops. Not overly complex.

Mouthfeel: Lots of active carbonation in the mouth. A bite of alcohol in the finish.

Drinkability: A straightforward bock style beer. Pretty refreshing and solid, worth consuming in repetition. (584 characters)

A nice clear copper colored brew, this one has a thin off-white head. Good appearance. The aroma is clean,a lightly malty, and with a hint of undetermined fruit. Decent hop presence. Fresh and clean taste. Firmly bitter. This is a tasty, but not exceptional outdoor brew (enjoyed on my deck on Memorial Day). (308 characters)

The beer pours a nice amber color with a thick frothy offwhite head that slowly fades to lacing. The aroma is decent. It has a dry, pale and crystal malt scent along with a light hop aroma. The taste is decent also. It has a dry, "amber" ale taste with a moderate bitterness. It's basically a copper colored APA. The mouthfeel is average. It is a medium bodied beer with too much carbonation. This beer really isn't much to get excited about. It's overly carbonated and isn't all that interesting. (497 characters)

On tap at Sawmill Tap Room 4/28/12

A - orangish amber; thin lacing of white head; little retention

S - very little is anything in the nose; faintly metallic

T - citrusy, caramel, faint chocolate, fruity

M - medium bodied, smooth, lightly carbonated

This was a bit disappointing. It didn't have much flavor-wise that stood out, but it had some characteristics that lead me more towards an amber ale. In the end it was boring, unbalanced, and not specifically stylistic. (473 characters)

Pours a clear golden amber color with a minimal white head. Aroma is hops, pine hops, and citrus hops.

The taste is more of the same. hops, hops, hops. A bit watery too, to be honest. Like many other APAs out there, this one just goes a bit too hop crazy and never finds the right balance. The flavors are light and crisp, so it's not a bad beer for a picnic or something, but it's a bit too unbalanced for my liking. (420 characters)

Pours a clear copper color with about two fingers of beige head. Keeps a pretty full, nice looking lace and leaves some nice webbing on the sides.

Smells of toasted malt and a bit of caramel. Hops are very feint; only a bit of earthiness and a hint of citrus.

Taste also consists of primarily toasted malt and caramel, with a bit more hop flavor than the nose let on. It's primarily earthy like the nose, with a leafy, slightly herbal quality as well. Very minimal bitterness.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied and pretty smooth. Slightly dry in the finish. Moderate carbonation.

This is decent but it's really nothing to get excited about. Pretty basic pale ale that's pretty light on the hop character actually. The toasted malt is the dominant quality. Decent stuff. (766 characters)

Bought a single bottle from Trader Joe's. Poured into a ikea glass. Poured a nice copper color with a quickly dissipating white head, left not lacing. Not much at all on the nose. Taste is average, mainly pine. Overall, there is nothing compelling about this beer. (264 characters)

This is a fairly inoffensive uni-dimensional beer that is drinkable but not overly memorable. It is light to medium bodied, amber, clear, some lacing. the nose is very mild, some undefined maltiness. The head is off white and fairly creamy. The beer has some hop substance but is a bit tinny in the finish. There is a touch of roasted malts and amber type crystal malts. The problem is that this was sampled out of a plastic cup, so I will need to re-review it at a later point. For now, it is a slightly better than average beer. (530 characters)

Pour is a copper amber color with a malty yeasty aroma. very small head, but clean looking.

Taste of a mild american pale ale. The hop presence is extremely light for what I would consider an 'American' pale ale. Different beers entirely of course from Sierra Nevada Pale Ale and definitely not intending to do the same thing but I would prefer many other pale ales when given the option. Bottle says copper ale while style of this says APA. Still a nice caramel flavor and a nice dosing of different crystal malts mixed in.

Overall not bad, just not something I would seek out frequently. (592 characters)

A: crystal clear; amber colored; 1 finger off white head that receded quickly to a thin collar; OK lacing;

S: black pepper, lemon, a little metallic;

T: light caramel/toffee up front; lemon comes in mid-palate and brings some bitterness with it; light bitterness with a little metallic note on the finish;

M; medium bodied; medium to high carbonation; lightly dry finish;

O: Blue Point calls this a copper ale; Beer Advocate calls it a pale ale; doesn't really match up will with either style; nothing memorable - the metallic note isn't a positive; (554 characters)

"Long Island's Brewery" calls this copper ale, really just colorful American pale. Amber hue, tight bubbles, thin head. Dry aroma, some caramel malt. Tastes like wheat toast, rye, brown sugar. Creamy feel, drinkable. Like a nice day at a baseball park watching two teams you don't care about. (292 characters)

12oz bottle

A- Poured into a pint glass. Pours a clear copper color with an off-white head with great lacing and retention.

S- The malty aroma features caramelized malts and citrusy hops. The aroma is definitely on the faint side, it's not bad just very subdued.

T- The taste like the aroma is malty up front with more bitterness in the finish than expected from the hops.

M- The mouthfeel is light to medium bodied with a good amount of carbonation.

O- Overall, Spring Fling is a pretty decent beer that is worth a try. (525 characters)

Clear orange-with-a-tan topped by white bubbly that clears to lacing. Active carbonation while I look at it in the glass. Aroma of citrus peels, hops, slight lemon/grapefruit, and some dandelion. Starts bland citrus, hop leaves, then follows with hop resin, light fruit, some cereal background and a malty sweet note as the beer warms but hops remain in the forefront slick on the palate. The bitterness hits a high point toward the finish and sours the tongue. Light in body with medium carbonation. A pale ale that gives a nod to the West Coast but falls short of impersonation. Drinkable but a few hop notes that really hurt toward the finish. (646 characters)
