Notes/Commercial Description:
While birds of a feather stick together, their wings should not. We blew our cap seeing images of oilslick seabirds and thinking about what may happen to more of our fine, feathered-friends as they migrate south this fall, so we hatched this flighty idea for a specialty brew called 'Toxic Sludge'.
All of the proceeds will benefit Tri-State Bird Rescue & Research's "Spreading Our Wings" campaign and their efforts to build a Wildlife Response Annex. To learn more, please visit: www.tristatebird.org
In times of crisis (like this) we figure you can either hibernate or participate.
Try this tasty, dry-hopped Black IPA, it's as smooth as water off a duck's back. So everytime you drink one, please let out a loud squawk in honor of our beautiful, beaked brethen.
We hope you can dig deep in your hearts (and pockets) to help support the effort.
Be Well,
Mark & Pete

On tap at the Mellow in Greensboro.Poured into a stanard pint a deep cola color with a 1/2 finger tannish colored head atop.Dark roast and earthy tones with mild bitter chocolate upfront in the nose, piney hops come into play late and linger well.Dry and roasty on the palate mixing with piney hops, light bitter chocolate as well, like others have said it seems more like a hopped up porter. It's not bad but again it seems more of a porter than a IA in my opinion.

A: A very dark brown with good clarity. The thick head is made of long lasting, light tan rocky bubbles that leave a sticky lacing on he glass.

S: A medium citrus hops aroma with a moderately-strong grassy note from dry hopping. There are medium-low malt aromas of sweetness and chocolate. A strong alcohol character brings a bit of floral note towards the back.

T: The bitterness dominates with a medium-strong hops bitterness and a a fairly strong citrus hops flavor. There is a bit of the malt sweetness coming through with a low chocolate and coffee note. The balance is very bitter, overly so with out enough malt to support it. The finish is off-dry and the aftertaste is all citrus hops and long, lingering bitterness.

M: A somewhat creamy, medium bodied beer with a moderately strong level of carbonation. A light bit of harsh prickle on the palate and some warmth in the back of throat.

O: This is an unbalanced beer with a harsh bitterness, but it drinks better when not too cold. It does have a lot of hops with some dark grain character but it just come together more so because of too much C hops. That being said I'd still try this beer if I found it on tap.

22 ounce bomber, pours mahogany, larger dark tan head, that fades and strangely leaves next to no lacing.

Chocolate infused nose, malty, w/o much if any of a hop presence.

I'm getting plenty more chocolate, some minty hops and a well developed malty under carriage.

Pleasant enough take on a new and quickly becoming popular style. Everybody seems to be churning out a Dark IPA of some sort these days. This one was quite enjoyable and I'd give it another try, assuming its gonna be generally available, at least for a while.

Thanks to djrn2 for sending me this bottle.

The beer pours a medium brown color with a cream-colored head. The aroma is heavy on the roasted malt and chocolate. The beer smells more like a porter than a Black IPA because I don't get any hops in the nose.

There are definitely hops in the flavor. In addition to the chocolate and roasted malt, I get quite a bit of pine-flavored hops. Low bitterness.

Medium, creamy mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

A good beer for a good cause.

16 oz. can at fridge temp poured into a snifter. No freshness info.

Pours out what looks like a black color, but when held up to some light, it's actually a really dark ruby red color. A huge billowy off white, to light tan colored head that left a nice foamy cap taller than the rim of the glass off the pour. Really nice tight retention. Sticky lace covers al most every inch of exposed glass.

Piney, fruity, slightly woody hops, some dry citrus, with some grain husk.

A nice even taste. Piney hops mingle with caramel grains. Finishes with a dry citrus bitterness. Some fruitiness somewhere in there. Easy but enjoyable.

Medium in body. Carbonation is about right for the style. A nice bitterness that lingers with just a hint of sweetness.

Pretty solid and drinkable black IPA. One of the more well made beers I've had from blue point.

Ruby brown with a half inch of tightly bubbled foam that lingers very very long. Very low aroma of faint hops. Initial flavor of dark malt, morphing quickly to grapefruit and orange rind. Very balanced, not too black and not too IPA. Could actually use a little more oomph on both ends of the spectrum. Full mouthfeel, a bit tannic, but satisfying. Drinkable beer, but could use more character for my tastes.

Had on cask from the eponymous Cask Republic a while back, just getting back into reviews ago. From notes.

Pours a fairly dark brown, opaque from the darkness. Head is only about a finger, it's very 'quiet'.

Nice rich aromas of molasses, chocolate, and roasted malt intertwine in the glass.

Very malty beer, the cask certainly allowed for some hop fade, there must have been no dry hopping here. Lots of smokey roasted malt, epsresso, chocolate, molasses, and even a touch of anise in the middle; really spectacular.

Surprisingly very light mouthfeel makes this one quaffable.

Would love to get this one again, maybe I'll even stumble on an old bottle one day, who knows... great beer nonetheless.

Big thanks to Joeybeerbelly for sending this in the winnings for Week 6 of the Sunday Night Football Squares LIF.

Poured into a pint glass black with a two finger off white head. Good lacing and retention. It's allergy season, so I can't smell much of anything but I can find hint of dark malts. The flavor has a nice bite of hops with dark carmeled malts Well balanced and medium bodied. Very nice black IPA.

Pours dark reddish brown with a finger of head that vanishes without a trace. While dark for an IPA, I would not consider this black.

Subtle hop aroma first, followed by some malt hints, and a tiny bit of pine at the end. May be detecting some Belgian yeast too?

This may just be too cold since it's right out of the fridge, but this is very lackluster. Not really getting anything discernible except an iota of yeast and a basic hop bitterness in the aftertaste. Extremely underwhelming. Definitely need to give this some time to warm up.

Thin with medium carbonation.

I'm going to let this warm up, but as of now it leaves much to be desired. This is my issue with cans. It's too cold to taste!

On-tap at Misconduct in Philadelphia.

Pours a dark brown color with a half-finger tan head. The head recedes into a thin layer on top leaving solid lacing.

Smells of muted roasted malts with good amounts of milk chocolate aromas. Also present are moderate amounts of citrus hops and lighter amounts of leafy hop aromas.

Tastes similar to how it smells. Dark malt flavors with hints of roastiness kick things off and are joined quickly by solid amounts of citrus hops. Midway through the sip the roastiness fades out almost completely, allowing hints of cocoa powder flavors to work their way into things. Slight amounts of earthy hop flavors make a brief appearance before fading out into a moderately bitter ending.

Mouthfeel is good. It's got a nice thickness with solid carbonation.

Drinkability is also good. I had no problems finishing my glass and could have another.

Overall this was certainly a more subtle CDA, I would actually almost consider it a hopped up porter if the roasted malt character were just a bit more robust. Not worth writing home about but it's a solid beer that's worth a shot.

Many thanks to Beenitty for this awesome extra from our recent trade. I've never heard of this one, so here we go:

Poured into my dfh snifter. pours a pitch black color, medium body consistency. Crazy oatmeal color foam fills the top of the glass quickly, and hangs around forever. more than 10 minutes after the pour, it still holds about 1.5 fingers of cloudy head. superior head retention. Smell- chocolate, citrus bitterness, chalky milk chocolate. Pretty standard for the style. Taste- chalky bitterness, nice chocolate presence, roasty bitterness. One of my issues with this style has been that I can't really tell the difference between this and a stout/porter, but this one is uniquely an IPA that has a roasted malt backbone. Overall, I'm pretty impressed. Mouthfeel- nice and creamy, but at the same point not too thick.

Thanks to Cuzco for this one!

A: Poured into a pint glass. Very dark black with a frothy two finger mocha colored head. Dissipates down to one finger (pretty vigorous pour), and lasts for a very long time. Sheets of lacing down the sides.

S: At first I really only get some grapefruit citrus, but as the beer warms there is a little bit of roasted malt, and some dark fruit.

T: There is some roasted malt, a little bit of chocolate, and some dark fruit, I think figs and prunes. Not much citrus or pine at all, seems like the hops disappeared, even though they are prominent in the aroma.

M/D: Medium bodied with a lot of carbonation. It is on the creamier side. Overall, not great and unbalanced. The nose seemed one sided, being mostly hop driven, and the flavor was malt driven. Too bad, because the appearance is amazing.
