This pub has been listed in every version of the Good Beer Guide (CAMRA) since it first started, and the only pub in Liverpool to so. The reason isn't hard to see; it is a pleasent "human" place with 4 guest hand pumps for ale and has never attempted to be anything else. I visited on a Saturday in May 2011 about 2pm. It has a small snug on the left as you enter, a larger room to the right with chairs and tables and a back room. The guest ales were listed on a blackboard, and it was possible to purchase sampler sized glasses of the ales if one wished.

We sat in the front snug at the window. I notice the window itself was a brand new double glazed one, but totally in keeping with the place. They had also repainted the interior to keep it clean and fresh. There are no TVs, loud music or other such distractions. There are plenty of those type of establishment nearby, should you want them.

An little gem of a place!

Small pub just of Hardman Street, on Roscoe Street, only 5-10 minutes walk from Lime Street Station.

Small narrow bar with two small rooms off, all in traditional style, but very clean and well cared for.

Four hand pulls of guest ales (at time of visit Jennnings and Burton Ale were the guests) plus taps for the usual lagers and Guiness. Very welcoming Landlord who knows his beer and enthusiastic about it too. Cosy welcoming pub just off the bustle of Hardman Street, definately worth looking out for, to enjoy a decent pint in peace and quiet. No loud music or TVs to distract the business in hand!

Other well known Liverpool pubs within easy reach for a "crawl" The Liverpool/Merseyside Camra group Web site has maps and guides to the pub scene in Liverpool, see www.merseycamra.org.uk

A visit to the City of Liverpool & a Pub Crawl here certainly offers the Imbiber some of the finest Pubs in the North of England. During my many years of visiting here; Beer Bars that serve a plethora of Guest Beers have come & gone, improved & declined, opened & closed, as sure as night follows day. Yet the Roscoe Head has featured in every single one of my Crawls & never fails to impress, it is probably the most consistent Pub in the City, indeed, it is the only Pub in Merseyside to feature in every single Edition of the CAMRA Good Beer Guide - that’s 31 years, a feat only matched by around 17 other Pubs in the UK!

It has managed to do this by never aspiring to be anything except a Pub that serves quality Real Ale, it has never tried to be anything it isn’t, but what it is, it does exceptionally well.

Set almost inconspicuously in a small side-street, the Roscoe Head has a typical enough looking exterior that hasn’t changed for many years. The inside is relatively unchanged, as such; it still retains an interior that offers comfort, coziness & a degree of privacy. The bar is to your left as you enter, the welcome is always warm & the smiles genuine. Several Handpumps dot the small bar, along with some keg taps that dispense brewery-conditioned beers not worthy of listing, for you should only come here to drink the Cask-Conditioned beer. It used to sell Tetley Bitter, but on my last few visits it had Jennings Bitter & Cumberland Ale. The quality of these two ales alone is worthy of praise. Often they have a Guest Beer from a rotating brewer, or if you are lucky it is often the Jennings Snecklifter. There are small rooms to the left & right, & a well furnished back room that has some Brewery Mirrors on display.

It serves Lunchtime Meals, but I have never decided to eat here being as we are on a Crawl. Nevertheless, the home-cooked food is highly regarded by the locals. The locals themselves are an integral part of the attraction of this Pub, from nearby workers, including many Post Office employees, to the people who pop in here for a quick beer on their way home from work, they are all welcoming of visitors & never ‘off-hand’ as some can be when you populate “their” local & drink “their” beer.

This is most certainly one of the better Pubs in Liverpool, truly communal, & well worthy of a visit. They may only have 3 Cask-Conditioned beers here, but heck are they all excellent!
Try to leave here after just the one Pint – I bet you can’t!

Like drinking used to be.

This is a proper pub. Not flashy, no gimmicks, just an honest boozer.

As you walk up past the burnt out (WW11 Bombed) church on your way to The Phili, the side street on the left, has this pub just 10 yards along it.

Small front bar counter on the left, and a slightly larger back room with tables and chairs, almost a lounge really. The back room is served from the rear of the front bar, not a hatch, just an open ended counter.

Locals and a few people in the know, frequent this place, the Jennings Beers are always in tip top condition. If you like plush, opulent palaces to drink in, this is not for you. If you like good company and good Real Ale, then find this bar while in Liverpool, it is almost halfway up the hill to The Phili, and everyone goes there, so stop off on the journey and have a pint in here too.
