Had on tap at Union Square—served into a pint glass

Appearance: 1/2 inch head, dark-red/brown in color, clear, high carbonation

Smell: toasted malt and woods

Taste: very hop forward with caramel starting in the middle, then mixing with floral hops at the end

Mouthfeel: high carbonation, medium bodied, bitter start with a sweetish middle and a less bitter end, very dry

Overall: An average to above average red ale that is on the hoppy side. Overall of the three pints I ordered there, this was my least favorite. I would pass on this in the future, but it is worth a try especially for those that are more hop inclined.

Appearance – The ale was deep brown in color and clear with a nice head that showed some good retention.

Smell – The sharp, corny aroma covered up the hidden toasted malt backbone.

Taste – This ale was smooth but very unbalanced. The mix of toasted malts and toffee was finished with a funky, minty aftertaste. All this and not a hop to be found.

Mouthfeel – This was shy of medium-bodied. It had a rather pleasant foamy mouthfeel to it but the ale lacked balance.

Drinkability – It's not bad, but what the hell is it?

On tap at Heartland"s new BBQ joint next the Times square location. Served in a large stein. This one pours dark reddish amber, cloudy and a bit murky. Tan head, decent lacing, nose was of lightly roasted malts. Malt sweetness carries this brew. Drying hops come in late. This is a decent take on a boring style. This one exhibits a nicely rounded mouthfeel, a moderate amount of smokey malts and a flavorful, balanced finish. Nice quaffable brew.

One of two malty reds offered at Radio City. This was deep red, showed lots of lace, and was a caramel story. Overcarboanted and just too sweet and light mouthfeel. Quite bland when I expected toated malt and the like, maybe just not from the best batch.

Draft at HB burger: Poured a clear copper color ale with a medium foamy head with good retention. Aroma of medium caramel malt with light dry finish. Taste is not the most spectacular with good caramel malt and a light subtle dry hoppy finish. Body is about average with good carbonation. Not bad but really not something to seek out again.

On-tap at Heartland Brewery Union Square, New York, NY

A: The beer is crystal clear dark red in color. It poured with a half finger high off white head that never completely faded away, consistently leaving a thin layer of bubbles covering the surface.
S: There are light to moderate aromas of earthy yeast in the nose along with notes of caramel and grainy malts.
T: The taste is similar to the smell and also has some flavors of nutty malts. There is a light to moderate amount of bitterness, which particularly lingers through the finish.
M: It feels medium-bodied and slightly smooth on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: The earthy yeast aromas and flavors seem to be unique compared to other beers in this style, but other than this nothing really stood out about this beer as being very interesting.

18th Jan 2013 finds me in New York and the Heartland tap under the ESB.

I found this to be their beer that most suited my taste buds.

Good colouring, red and clean, on top a beige head of foam.

The aroma was malt infused nuts with caramel topped toffee apple.

The taste was also on the sweet side , but the hops gave it a more semi-bitter feel after the roasted malts calmed down in the mouth.

Flavoursome and most enjoyable.

Poured a deep mahogany hue with a one finger foamy white head. There was decent retention and lacing.

The smell consisted of a light aromatic hop and a light caramel aroma.

The taste featured a nice nutty caramel malt with hints of toffee. There was a decent bittering hop as well.

The mouthfeel was medium with an astringent finish.

Overall an easy to drink ale that is a bit bland.

A: Dark amber in color with some head. Very good lacing.

S: Big problem for me - not much on the nose. Maybe some fruity esters, but nothing else.

T: Fruity and sour - nice farmhouse punch.

M: Very smooth - minimal carbonation.

D: Just okay for me. The lack of smell really bothered me.

I had this as a part of a voyage at the Heartland at 51st between fifth and sixth avenues in Manhattan. I like this beer but it isn't my favorite. Red color, as expected. Good carbonation. Very good roasty flavor and aroma.

Not my favorite but worth getting.

This beer poured a clear amber red with a thin white head atop it. The aroma was faint, of caramel malt and American hops. Neither one came through too strongly though.

The taste is a very balanced blend of the afformentioned malt backbone and hops. Neither one dominates, so it doesn't stay on your palate long. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, with a slightly dry finish. Overall this isn't the most complex beer in the world, but I found it very sessionable, and a really fine example of how an amber ale should be brewed.

Had this beer at the Radio city location. Served as part of the flight. Sample glass. Cool.

Pours a red brown body with and off white tan head.

Grainy smell and a light floral smell. Sweet toffee taste and a full and slick mouthfeel.

Really nice offering. Good version of a red. I would drink this again.

Served in a shaker pint at their South Street Seaport location. Nice red/amber color served with no real head and laced sporatically. Nice hints of toffee or caramel aroma. Very smooth and pleasing to the mouth. Nicely balance with a hint of caramel sweetness. A really easy brew to drink. Overall a pleasant experiance.

WOW. Had this at the Times Square location. Dark brownish red in color, not too much head but it didnt bother me after I tried it. Smell was sweet toffee and caramel, roasty malt. Taste reminded me of a dopplebock at first, very creamy and sweet but more carbonation, then fading to a balanced hoppy finsih. Beautifully balanced beer, easily their best brew and one of the finest ales I've ever had.

Pours reddish copper with a thin head that hangs on throughout the drink, and leaves some lacing on the glass.

The smell is mild with toffee and nutty aromas.

The taste is of sweet toffee, nuts. Malty with a late hop dryness.
Not complex, but tasty.

The feel is a bit thin, but coating enough. A nice after-taste lingers.

Easy to drink, rather tasty, a bit thin. Not bad for style. Sweet with some late hop balance.

Ordered this at the Barbeque...

Appears in a monster pint, dark ruby red with a decent head topping it off, aroma was of light hops and a hint of malt, not quite sure which hops they are using but they are here in fair abundance. Taste is slightly hoppy, a little bit more alcholic than I thought it would be, it's on the more watery side of the palette, almost too watery but it barely holds on. Finishes nicely, light hops on the mouth and slides refreshingly down the throat, not the finest version I've had and nothing notable but went extremely well with the dynamite pulled pork sandwich I had and I ordered another.
