Had on tap at Union Square--served into a pint glass

Appearance: red-brown in color with 1/4 inch head, clear, moderate carbonation

Smell: chocolate, roasted malt, and some sugar

Taste: honey and roasted malt in the beginning, some nut and bitter hops in the middle followed by roasted malt in the finish

Mouthfeel: light body, moderate carbonation, sweet start with a bitter middle that becomes less bitter in the end

Drinkability: An above average but not overly memorable porter. Could have a couple of these, but would just as soon pass.

Dark brown and nearly opaque with a light brown head that settles out slowly and leaves long legs and sheets of lace all around the insides of the glass. Low aroma of chocolate and honey. Rich flavor of cocoa and floral hops, accented with honey and slightly roasted bitterness. Hints of sweetness, but well balanced with moderate roasty bitterness. Noticeable fruity esters. Powdery mouthfeel, slightly tannic, semi slickness, but a tingly carbonation finish. Honey and esters linger.

On tap at the Empire State Building location. Honey in the aroma, not in the taste, where it adds to a buttery mouthfeel alone. Nice roast.Dark colour with some lacey brown head. Chocolate malt. A light mouthfeel. Non offensive porter, but it could use lot of tweaking and they can lose the honey.

On-tap at Heartland Brewery and Chophouse (Times Square), New York, NY

A: The beer is clear but very dark reddish brown in color. It poured with a finger high off white head that died down and left a collar around the edge of the glass.
S: Light aromas of chocolate and roasted malts are present in the nose.
T: The taste has bits of flavors of roasted and chocolate malts but what stands out nicely is accompanying notes of honey. A slight amount of bitterness is present.
M: It feels medium-bodied and a bit smooth on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer is easy to drink and seems to have a nice amount of honey just to keep things interesting.

I always enjoy a punny name. So, if "beer name" was a category, it would get a five, but unfortunately, believe a honey porter by any other name would taste as sweet. This brew is a toned down version of its big bro Farmer John. The appearance is very dark with hues of ruby, rosewood, and oxblood. My pint, however, suffered a very humble head. The taste was chocolate, expresso, highlighting the roasted malt, sweet, but suprisingly lacking honey,... BASICALLY IT's JUST A WATER DOWN FARMER JOHN'S. And since I love Heartland's bold oatmeal stout, I enjoyed this beer. So if you can't take the bold and beautiful taste of a good ol' Farmer John's than opt for this generic version.

Poured a deep brown hue with a one finger creamy white head. There was good retention and lacing.

The smell featured a heavy burnt grain and cafe au laite.

The flavor consisted of a robust burnt graininess and a clean coffee.

Overall a tasty and robust porter. One of the best to come out of Heartland.

Had this beer in both taster glass and pint form at the Radio City Location. Served cool.

Pours a dark walnut body and an off white head. Licorice and raisin smell. Taste is also licorice and raisins. Mouthfeel is medium and slick.

This may be one of the best beers offered by place. Nice burn as it goes down. I would definitely go for this again.

First had: on tap at Heartland Chophouse, NYC, NY

Nice name. Pours a dark, clear brown with a small tan head. Roasty malts in the aroma and not much more. Mostly roasted malts in the taste, some coffee bitterness, and a touch of honey is barely noticeable. Medium body; a little light for a porter. Moderately drinkable, but not too unique.

Appearance: clear brown color with a very short 1/4" head that disappears immediately.

Smell: roasted malts and an overall big sweetness is detectable.

Taste: roasted malts provide the soft burnt tones, but the honey sweetness and light bitterness balance it out. Some minor coffee and hints of chocolate linger in the background.

Mouthfeel: lightly crisp from start to finish. Very short aftertaste. Medium bodied beer.

Drinkability: easy to drink. This can be a session beer for just about anyone, but the flavors are a bit soft overall which may bore some people.

Had this brew on tap while in NY this past week. The brew was poured to very dark brown color with a fair sized tan head that has great retention and left a fair amount of lacing. The aromas are pleasant but with scents of chocolate and coffee. The taste is also pretty good with the malt flavors dominating with a sweet flavor mixed in. Slight bitter end noticed but was still muted with the malt flavors. Not sure if it was the sweetness but one was enought, did not leave me wanting for another one. Over all this is a good brew, not my favorite for the style but a nice offering from Heartland.

dark brown (but not quite black) appearance with translucent reddish/mahogany hues at the bottom of the glass and nice thick off-white head that stuck around for some time. Aromas rather faint with hints of chocolate, roasted coffee, and honey. This beer is all about the malt, with a slightly bitter finish. Flavor doesn't deviate much from the aroma, as the chocolate and toasted malts shine upfront but quickly take a back seat the the honey sweetness. Medium/Full bodied with lighter mouthfeel than I had expected, but still rather smooth and creamy. Certainly a decent porter and satisfying brew but wouldn't have more than a pint or two.

Pours a dark, but clear brown. Thin tan head. Nose is a little bit mild. Some malts. Flavor is nice and smooth. Good robust aspect to it. Mildly bitter tone. Smooth sweet tone that carries a definite honey influence. Smooth feel. Subdued but noticed carbonation. Good liquid body. This is an easy drinker where my first sip turned more into a gulp. This beer has turned the tide of my opinion of Heartland beers.

Someone slap me! Other than the Farmer Jon and the Barleywine I usually don't stump for a Heartland beer, but this was suprisingly good stuff. Deep brownblack with a ruby red translucence at the bottom of the glass, small milky head with a sweet nutty coffee smell. Sweet toasted malt, birch bark, honey and light coffee flavor, with a somewhat piney, bitter finish. Smooth and tasty, I will go back and have this again.
