On nitro-tap at Heartland Brewery and Chophouse (Times Square), New York, NY

A: The beer is very hazy dark reddish brown in color. It poured with a half finger high creamy and dense off white head that has excellent retention properties and also left a coating of bubbles down the sides of the glass.
S: Light aromas of malts are present in the nose - toasted malts seem to stand out in particular.
T: Like the smell, the taste is a little malty and has a slight amount of bitterness. No tea-like flavors are detectable.
M: It feels medium-bodied and very smooth and creamy on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation. There are slight bits of dryness.
O: This beer is very easy to drink. While it can be considered average, it is exemplified by serving on nitro-tap.

Grabbed a pint served on Nitro Tap (Irish Style, as the beer menu called it) at the Times Square location.

A - Pours a nice reddish color. After the cascading effect subsided it left a nice nitro induced head atop. Nice looking.

S - Smell was pretty subdued, with tiny roaty aromas and some caramel sweetness.

T - Very nice, following the smell with some roasted tones over a sweet flavor. A nice flavor for an Irish Red.

M - Nice and smooth from the Nitro tap. The nitro'ed feel complemented the flavors nicely.

D - This really has the makings of a great session beer. Using the nitro in an Irish Red is unexpected, but it just made the beer easy to quaff.

Notes: All the previous reviews didn't seem to crazy about this brew. The most recent was from '05 though and none of the nitro verios. Maybe they've made some changes here but I thought it was a tasty Irish Red.

Was told I was a bastard’s stepchild with this one on 3/29/2005. 16-oz. pint in a shaker glass.

Tight-like-a-vice cream head, maybe 1/8-inch thick, with a strumpet lacing and stick. Light claret hue with lots of clarity and a fair amount of action. Metallic malt jam on nose with a blood grapefruit aspect and light lemon rind. Slight peachy flavor but it is hog-washed by the bittering notes and some charcoal aspects. Expected something creamier with less of a bite, but still fine; more than passable, but I actually preferred the Red Rooster.

Went out to heartland in Union Square last night before going to see the Dropkick Murphy's and was hoping to partake in a few Old Faithful's but I was a little to late it was replaced with Kelly's Irish red. What else could I do but give it a try. It was good enough for a couple but it did not overly impress me.
The apperance was very good Deep Amber with decent head retention and good clarity. The smell is sharp but not too strong of somthing I can't quite define but good. It starts off with a strong and tasty yet dry toasted malt flavor but has no lasting taste, within less than a second you can barely remember taking a sip. The mouthfeel is dry and a little heavier than most Red's.
This beer presents better than it really is but the taste does not disappoint while it lasts.

I had a very interesting experience with this beer. It started out great and wound up a challenge to finish it:

Settles like a true Irish Red and with a fine and creamy 1/2-inch head. Smells of anis and caramel. I do not like anis, but the aroma is wonderfully complex. Oh yeah, you can taste the anis. Still, I am trying not to let that affect how I judge the beer. There are some solid flavors, but it is definitely dominated by anis. Feels a little too sharp on the tongue as well. After about half, I've had way too much of that anis taste. There are not anough flavors in play. My opinion of this beer just dropped tremendously in the time it took me to drink half a pint.
