The Heartland Brewery is like the Applebee's of brewpubs, at least in terms of ubiquity and ambiance if not quality. Their beers are many and varied, and they aim to please: non-beer fans will probably be quite satisfied with the blasé light lager, the very refresing wheat beer, or even the chocolatey, Guinness-ish oatmeal stout. Beer fans will not likely be blown away by any one beer in particular, but most of us will certainly enjoy the variety provided by the taster tray.

The vibe is boisterous and friendly, although service isn't anything special - the staff is really too busy to stop and chat beer. The other main drawback to this place is the cost - $7 can get you a much better pint at a different beer bar in town, but if you stick to the $11 sampler tray, you'll probably feel you got your money's worth.

All in all, this is a fun place to try some good beer and shoot the shit with other tourists. It's not a place to ruminate over the nuances of fine artisanal ales with your nose stuck in a globe glass. If that's what you're in the mood for, head for Beer Table. If you just want a casual drinking session, head to the Heartland.

We Visit the Mid town location at 625 8th Ave. at 41st St. near the port authority bus station.
stop by around the end of the lunch rush. Service was ok only saw the one bartender waiting on customers with the manger help out once in a while. Beer was good. food was average.

You can't walk by them but they are certainly not a destination either. Luckily Manhattan has some great beer bars because the brewery situation is bleak. Though I did not eat it seemed like more of a restaurant that brews on the side. Nice clean spot that had a lot of activity so it seemed popular. Tried to nurse a Saturday morning hangover but they did not open till 1pm. There are a few around the city so chances are you will end up walking by one of them. Do stop but don't go far out of your way.
