The food here was exactly what we were looking for...meat and potatoes cooked perfectly. I ordered the Brauhaus-Teller which is two veal schitzels served with fried potatoes and my girlfriend got a Bratwurst with Potato Salad. All of the food was extremely delicious and I would definitely go there again. Their only beer is their Kolsch, which is the standard for all brewpubs there. It is served in very small .2L glasses and is very light and refreshing and went well with the meal. The waiter was extremely helpful and spoke English very well.

Peters Kölsch is not my favorite of the bunch, yet Peters Brauhaus, right adjacent to the old market square in Cologne serves up a great atmosphere and very good regional (and some not so regional) cooking. All this in various pleasantly designed areas within the building (although a rather new place, they have succeeded in its design I think). And service in my experience (three visits) has been also good to boot. In my visits (3 total), there have always been quite the number of wiaters (Köbes) to go around; a good thing, too, since this place is fairly huge.

On my last visit, I enjoyed a relaxed lunch, starting with an obligatory five or so beers (ie: .2 L Stange glasses). I started my solids with a "Halver Hahn." A regional snack, this consists of local mild cheese and a crunchy roll served with butter (!) and NOT something of a half-chicken variety or other (gotta love their food slang). Although it sounds simple enough, you do not eat it like a sandwich (unless you want suspicious looks directed your way). No, indeed one must slice the roll with the knife, then proceed to butter each half on the plate, also some obligatory mustard, then divide the cheese atop the two halves. Then you use a fork and knife to eat. Really.

After more beers, I ordered a very tasty dish which basically consisted of a bowl in which beans and thick bacon were simmered in a mildly-spiced brown sauce. My brother also partook. Yummy. And, yes, a spoon, knife and fork did suffice...

Very professionally run.

Like any Kölsch brewpub or bar it is completely seat yourself but if one feels akward wandering the vast area this brewpub/restaurant covers (believe me, its huge) one can go to any 'kerbie' (waiter) and ask if he knows of any free tables. They'll quickly show/tell you where and get back to their work. They bust their butts, but its not atypical for a Kölsch brewpub. I really tip my hat to their employees. Once seated beer is served almost in a ritual like fashion. Nod your head and bamm another beer. Food is order by number (especially if your german isnt so good) in order to specify better what the customer wants. Note I didnt order food on this visit but had watched the process a few times.

Selection of course is limited to house beers which without surprise is solely Kölsch. There is a small wine list and small top shelf liquor list as well. None the less they offer quite a few Kölsch mixes to liven up any monatny (sp) that may come about.

Atmosphere is typical of Kölsch brewpubs. Its meticulously kept and designed. Though it is a newer building its decor would fool anyone. The whole ole Kölsch decor is there. Wood tables, wood this and that, and traditionally dressed waiters. Also old pictures of the original business cover the walls. Cool place.

Has a real old world feel to the place, lots of dark wood, ancient decorations, beautful chandeliers. The menu consisted of lots of boiled meats and vegetables, if you want to play it on the safe side, order the Brauhaus-Teller, two pork schnitzels served with a salad and some home fries. There is only one beer here, the kolsch. If you're in Koln, you're drinking kolsch, and you could do a lot worse than Peters. The waitstaff is helpful and generally speaks English. This is a bit of a tourist stop. The locals stick to one of the many many other local bars for the most part, but they drink here too. Overall, a traditional German brauhaus experience with good beer, good food, and a great atmosphere.

Stop number 3 on a Kolsch bar-hop through the center of Cologne. We didn't enter the brauhaus, so this review is based on what I'll term the beer garden in front.

There were shady tables with seating for maybe 150 people, very comfortable at the end of a long day of travel. The servers were extremely fast, and although we only ordered beers I saw that the food menu looked extensive. It included all the great classics, pork knuckle included.

The Kolsch was surprisingly good. I'll leave my decriptions of the beer to the beer review, but I'll say here that it's a great reason to come to this particular brauhaus. Among the best I tried while in Cologne.
