Using an old world recipe, we handcraft this wonderous beer with Belgian wheat malt and fresh raspberries. In fact, six pounds of fresh British Columbia raspberries go into making every case, resulting in a tart, crisp flavour. Our double fermentation process produces an intensely fresh raspberry aroma and palate, abundantly obvious from its ruby-red colour and pink head. During the aging process, the hop and fruit acids balance out the residual malt sugars to give this beer more taste bud bang. Amsterdam Framboise is best served chilled and shared with friends.

Wax-sealed bomber picked up at the LCBO; bottled on Apr 6 2015. While fruit beers are typically not my preferred tipple, I do tend to enjoy the raspberry-flavoured ones - which is why I've had my eye on this seasonal for a few years now. The lofty price tag was a serious deterrent, but after passing on it for a few years in a row, I've finally caved and paid for a bottle. Served slightly chilled.

Pours a deep, clear crimson ruby-red colour; highly effervescent and capped off with one finger of creamy, off-white coloured froth. It seeps away steadily over the next five minutes or so, leaving behind a thick collar and a soapy film at the surface. The aroma is a 50:50 mixture of wheaty malt sweetness and raspberry - not just the tart, juicy fruit, but also some mildly bitter, nutty raspberry seeds. Light hints of red grape and cherry also come through; the nose comes off as quite natural, with no artificial/syrupy notes to speak of.

The flavour profile is relatively simple and approachable, with wheaty, bready malt sweetness kicking things off initially. A nutty raspberry seed flavour surfaces by mid-sip, with tart raspberry and sweet cherry notes seizing your palate's attention soon afterwards. It finishes with a mild, seedy earthiness, combined with some light raspberry tartness and yeasty flavours. Medium-bodied, with moderate carbonation levels that result in a somewhat prickly feel on the palate. Not syrupy in the least, which is usually my main concern with these sorts of beers - thankfully, this one is refreshing and quite easy to drink.

Final Grade: 3.85, a B+. Amsterdam Framboise is a pretty good fruit beer - certainly miles ahead of their KLB Raspberry Wheat - but still not the top-tier beer you'd expect for nearly 11 bucks a bottle. This is an authentic-tasting raspberry beer that avoids the big pitfalls of this style - namely, cloying sweetness and artificial flavours. It's a pleasure to drink, and certainly one of the better Ontario-made raspberry beers I've tried. Worth trying at least once if you're a fruit beer fanatic, but not something to be sought out.

Well-balanced. Great rasberry taste, not sour, fruity and refreshing. Do not taste cheap syrup or cool aid. Nice fruit beer overall

650 ml bottle purchased for almost $10 CDN. Served fairly cold into glassware.

Appearance - Clear dark red, with pink infused highlights make this brew approximate the color of cranberry juice. Many fingers of off-white head are poured with a pinkish tinge. Tons of sticky lacing and a lot of bubbles. A great looking beer.

Smell - Raspberries and more raspberries. A little more sourness here almost gives the aroma of being crossed with a lambic.

Taste - And that's where the similarities to a lambic end. The taste is a bit medicinal, the raspberries are present but not nearly as much as one would expect and even a bit thin tasting. There's a on tasting sweetness that perks up for a couple of moments and finishes too clean. the booze is well hidden.

Mouthfeel - A bit thin, well carbonated with a try finish. I was expecting a bolder feel here.

Overall - A passable raspberry beer that I'm in no hurry to pick up again given the substantial cost and the overall quality of beer to my tastebuds.

Pours ruby red, with light carbonation and light head that dissipates fairly rapidly. Aromas are very much raspberry, and very pleasantly so. Maybe a bit of light biscuit in the background. Mouthfeel is quite surprising in its creaminess. Tastes are of raspberry, red grapes, and maybe a hint of wine. This might be too sweet for most, and I couldn’t see myself drinking more than one, but splitting a 650ml bomber with my wife, is going down pretty easily. This is a nice seasonal from Amsterdam.
