Chilled bottle poured into a pint glass. A thickish looking deep dark brown body with only mild translucent coloring around the edges. Generated a chunky three finger head that holds strong density in the centre and holds fast at half-a-finger across the surface and sticky lace patching around the glass.
Aroma is well defined and dominant with slight sweetness on the nose from chocolate and toffee malt like characteristics. Some sticky floral notes blend with dry smokey hops and sugars.
Taste is not as forward as the aromatic features of this beer. Once again roasted malts and grains feature strongly and provide a smokey type texture to the taste. Sweet chocolate and toffee is present but a lot more thrown back in the mix when compared to the presence of those notes across the beers aroma.
Whilst this Brown Ale is not even close to being light bodied it does come across that way when the body is considered in the context of the way this one looks as one could easily suspect a heavy bodied brew before tasting. Moderately carbonated, well balanced with a dominant bitterness and a dry finish.

500 ml bottle into pint glass, no bottle dating. Pours fairly crystal clear reddish brown color with a 1 finger dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a light amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of milk chocolate, cocoa, caramel, toast, brown sugar, dark bread, light nuttiness, light coffee, herbal, light fruitiness, and roast/yeast earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good complexity and balance of dark/roasted malt and light earthy hop notes; with solid strength. Taste of milk chocolate, cocoa, caramel, toast, brown sugar, dark bread, light coffee, herbal, light fruitiness, and roast/yeast earthiness. Light earthy/roast bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of milk chocolate, cocoa, caramel, toast, dark bread, brown sugar, light coffee, light fruitiness, herbal, and roasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Nice complexity and robustness of dark/roasted malt and light earthy hop flavors; with a good roasted bitterness/sweetness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Light carbonation and medium bodied; with a very smooth, crisp, and lightly bready/chalky mouthfeel that is good. Alcohol is well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish as expected of 4.5%. Overall this is a nice session Brown ale. Good balance, robustness, and complexity of dark/roasted malt and light earthy hop flavors; and very smooth and crisp to drink. A nicely enjoyable offering.

Brewed at Batemans for 'spoons latest real ale festival. Chestnut to mahogany colour with an offwhite head. It smells of toffee, but it certainly doesn't taste sweet, instead there's a wholemeal bread, almost marmitey flavour. There are certainly spicy hops here, but I prefer them in conjunction with something a little sweeter. There's also a hint of cocoa. It has a rather dry finish.
