This poured out as a deep reddish brown color with a nice looking cream colored head on top. The retention and lacing where pretty strong on this beer. The smell of the spice comes out big on the nose. Plenty of cardamom and cinnamon aroma fill the nose on this. There is plenty of spice in the flavor of this one as well. The malt adds very little sweetness to the beer, it's herbal and dry in the finish. The mouthfeel is a bit on the thinner side, I would have liked it to be a bit heavier to really add some depth. Overall it's a decent Winter brew but nothing spectacular.

This was the worst gusher I've ever seen, taking the cap off was like opening a fire hydrant, lost a lot of good beer, and then still took a long time for the head to calm down (brew date was 19.7.12 so about a year and a half old) colour is a really dark brown, big head. Losing half the beer has me rattled and the remainder better be amazing.
S- spicy and herbal, ginger is really strong, nuanced with some dark malts, lots of slick pungent spice, maybe some yeasty notes coming in, robust and interesting. Interesting phenolic notes.
T- clove spice, cinnamon, with ginger snaps, a robust full maltiness, spicy bitterness, some of the complex cardamon character. Tasty, with pepper and cinnamon, the spice plays well off the malts, mellow bitterness and ginger character.
M- moderate and full, lots of carbonation, spicy ginger coating feel. Slick finish with a lingering herbal character.
I had a ginger rosemary beer that almost ruined the idea of putting ginger in beer and I'm glad to see in this a pronounced but balanced character, smooth complex spiciness and lots of interesting nuances and complex flavours. A bit more hops wouldn't hurt as would not gushing all over the place, but a delicious complex beer with decent balance I would try another batch of in the hopes this was a one-off problem. Otherwise my rating would easily have exceeded 4. Very tasty beer.

Into a pint glass:

A: dark brown slightly close to a black colored body with a nice soft looking lumpy foamy head that is about two fingers worth, a fair amount of lacing graces the sides of the glass but slides at a reasonable pace

S: coca cola up front, but unlike the last Nogne I just had, there's a bit more spice involved with this on as I'm gettin' some gingerbread and some toastiness

T: coca cola comes back again in full force with an added sharp roasty pininess, the aftertaste is coca cola-ish with a watery finish

M: light to medium, somewhat sessionable, carbonation is exceptionally smooth, holy moley - wow, good to me

O: herbed/spiced beer, usually extremely hard to figure out for rating/reviewing purposes, but to rate something like according to style is more than hard. So, I guess, I'm left to say: would I have this again, quite possibly, as its definitely way better than the last Nogne I had.

This is one of the best holiday beers I've had. Poured slightly colder than their recommended 50 degrees F with a smallish tan, foamy, thick head that settled after a bit and good lace. Color is a very slightly hazy mahogany. Aroma is spicy - clove, nutmeg, cinnamon, others?, malt, toffee. Flavor's much like nose, tang is up front, followed by a mild bitter which was perfectly complimented by a softness of body. Fairly dry, and spices are not overdone. Body is perfect, ditto carbonation. Finish is like flavor, no off notes at all, and of average length. This is one of the most drinkable of spice beers. Glad it's in La Crosse!

500ml Bottle from the Ottawa LCBO for $6

Appearance - Hazy brown colour with an average size fizzy beige coloured head. There is a low amount of carbonation showing and there is some fair lacing. The head lasted for around 2-3 minutes before it was gone.

Smell - Malts, caramel/butterscotch, dark fruits, pine?

Taste & Mouth - There is a below average amount of carbonation and I can taste malts, caramel, and pine. There is also some apples, blueberries, and some light chocolate.

Overall - Whoa, lots of odd tastes going on here. Kind of like a stout mixed with a Christmas brew. Not something I'd seek out again, but worth trying to see how different a beer can taste.

Nogne Peculiar Yule
16.9 oz. bottle, no apparent freshness date

Nice appearance. The body is a clear mahogany brown with ruby and ruby-orange highlights beneath a pillowy head of lightly orange-tinted tan that leaves thick rings and sheets of lace about the glass as it goes.

The aroma is mainly piney, but perhaps contains some other spice, and it's gingerbready in combination with the toasty and toffee-ish malt included. I'm reminded of Ivin's Famous Spiced Wafers (which are apparently ONLY famous in the Philadelphia, New Jersey, and lower New York areas).

The flavor follows the aroma but with more maltiness, and as it warms it becomes much more rounded and not quite as sharp with pine. It's bready, toasty, spicy with ginger/nutmeg (and perhaps other spices, maybe all-spice), and piney. I'm not sure if the pine is coming from hops or not, but whatever's going on seems to be working well with the spices. There's not a lot of bitterness, but their needn't be as it finishes dry with a light touch of raspy evergreen. Looking deeper into it you'll find notes of caramel, light chocolate, toffee, and a good bit of nuttiness. It's fairly complex, and somewhat rich, yet it doesn't seem filling or overpowering.

Overall, definitely spicy. A good holiday beer. Well-rounded and balanced. Nicely done!
