Bottle from Barley Wine in Copenhagen, then consumed later in the hotel. Described as Triple IPA by the owner of Barley Wine and the bartender at Lord Nelson, it sure seemed much more like an American Strong Ale to me. Dark brown color (too dark for the style) with a expressive nose and a super bitter hoppy flavor. A good brew, but not great.

Coming out of grimstad Norway. $6.99 for a little over a pint. Not a bad price really. Burnt Caramel colored pour with a half inch of creamy head that dissipates within a minute or so. Scents are of raisins and caramel and malt, extremely strong odor that almost made me sneeze. One of the strongest smelling beers I’ve had. The taste is pretty thirst quenching, almost like an iced tea. My first taste I didn’t like but the beer kind of grew on me and I began liking it more the more I sipped. Initially caramel and toffee, not really very fruity. Big maltiness. Molasses and maybe plum. There’s a strong alcoholic heat aftertaste. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with minimal carbonation. Overall a barley wine that grows on you, this might be an acquired taste. Not like other beers.

Whoa! This is really nice! Features Maris Otter, wheat, and chocolate malts; Columbus, Chinook, and Centennial hops; English ale yeast, and their local Grimstad water... Malty and hoppy, the hops keeping the sweetness in check...

Dark brown body makes for an opaque drink, sparse bubbly tan head is really just a bunch of soapy-looking bubbles, and the back end of the bottle did cough up some chunky sediment I wasn't prepared for (oh, well - down the hatch!)...

Chewy malts, deep fruits, and earthy hops... Has a mineral quality and something almost savory, too... Hearty but not heavy, great feel and flavors... Suggestions of tobacco, toffee, and rich brown molasses bread... Super-impressed... The 2018 version I'm drinking has a slightly different label than pictured, and says, "Norwegian Ale" instead of "Barley Wine Style Ale"... Recommended...

Poured at a bottle share. Pours dark brown. Nose is plum, smoke, caramel, and malts. Really nice and inviting. Taste is smoke, plum, raisin, tobacco, coffee grounds, and salt. Mouthfeel is medium and nice. Overall, a nice barleywine.

Pours a dark brown color. 1/3 inch head of an off-white color. Great retention and great lacing. Smells of strong alcohol, strong sweet malt, yeast, slight roasted malt, and slight earthiness. Fits the style of an American Barleywine. Mouth feel is quite sharp and clean, with an average carbonation level. There is also a distinct dryness and bitterness. Tastes of strong alcohol, strong sweet malt, yeast, slight roasted malt, hint of smoke, wood, and slight earthiness. Overall, good appearance, complexity, and body, but lacking in blend and sharpness and bitterness are a detraction.

Look: It pours dark brown and has a light brown head. Head retention is low.

Smell: It has a high aroma of malt and chocolate. There are some moderate plum aromas It has a light earthy element and some wood. There are also a bit of molasses notes.

Taste: The are many rich malt flavors that include toffee, molasses, and bread. There are also some plum notes and chocolate with a bit of wood.

Feel: It has a full body that is not quite chewy, but is thick on the palate. The carbonation is low. There is a pleasant alcohol warming element as well.

Overall, there are a lot of malt flavors with some supporting elements in the background highlighted by chocolate, bread, toffee, and molasses with a strong plum character.
