Bottle dated July 12, 2012.

Beer is dark brown with some reddish hints. Moderately-sized beige head. OK retention, decent lace.

Smell is a real mixture of sweet malt and bitter, citrusy hops. Burnt caramel, brown sugar, a bit of wood, orange, a bit of apple.

Nice flavour. Similar to the nose, a real mix of malt and hops. Caramel, brown sugar, a bit bready, a touch of dark fruit. As for hops, orange sticks out. I don't pick out a lot more citrus fruit, but there is a notable bitterness from the hops, particularly at the finish. Really a good balance between the two sides. Good.

Full bodied, moderately carbonated. Fairly heavy, bready with a bit of a sticky syrupy flavour.

Overall, a good barleywine. Very enjoyable.

My first Nogne brew, and highly anticipated. Very deep brown, bordering on black in color. A flurry of carbonation results in a bubbly, medium-sized tan head that has great retention. When it finally fades, a constellation of little dots surround the middle of the snifter, and a few clumps of bubbles are left on top of the brew. Smells pleasant with deep chocolates and ripe red cherries easing into some piny hops. Subtle sweet malts and dark dried fruits flow across the palate and are followed by a big hit of more piney hops, distant dark chocolates and fairly sharp and lingering alcohol heat. Mouth-feel is medium to heavy, and it initially goes down smooth and creamy, but a certain crispness forms around the edges after a few drinks, making things interesting. I can see where aging one of these would make a big difference in rounding off some of the sharp edges, but it's still good to go as is, and very satisfying.

A: poured a very dark brown in color with brown highlights that had a thin bubbly head and left a little lacing sticking to the glass.

S: lots of caramel come out on the aroma with some good hoppy notes and lots of sweetness from the malts. There was quite a bit of booze as well.

T: the caramel also dominated the palate with a mild hop bite but had sweet malty and boozy accents.

M: the brew was medium in body with a low amount of carbonation which had a sweet, boozy, malty, and sticky finish.

D: I thought it was a soild barleywine and the hops weren't overwhelming this is the way I like'em. It was tasty but was a sipper faux show.

Pours a brownish body with quick dying head and minor lace patches. Aroma is malt strong as I pick up yeast/bread, light chocolate, caramel, touch of roasted malts and a medicinal hoppy aroma. Light to medium-bodied, smooth, the matls are prevelant as there is a dry, yeasty, almost woody edge with chocolate malt sweetness. All balanced with crisp, citric hops that pucker the tongue and give off a dry finish (that is also complemented by a cameo from the alochol to warm you up). Easy to drink, relaxing, and a well-balanced brew that is one of the best I've had in a while.
