On tap at capones

A- dark brown with red orange highlights. Nice finger thick cap of rather dense tan head.

S- sweet and roasty malts with lots of bold hops. Grapefruit and oranges.

T- lots of the grapefruit again with the orange playing a smaller role. Chocolate malts giving a more complex flavor profile then the average abw. Hints of candied fruit with warming and a bit of spice.

M- medium to full body with ample carb to carry the viscosity.

D- big stuff with a lot going on enjoyed my 13 oz but that was enough. Good stuff but not the best of the style.

24oz. bottle purchased for $8.99 at total wine in delaware. Caught my eye because I thought it would be interesting to try a scandinavian take on the american style. Love the simple flourescent orange O thingy on the bottle.

This beer pours so dark, an opaque coffee-brown with chocolate accents on the edges. The head is so light, almost off-white, definitly an interesting contrast. Lacing completely coats the walls of my wine glass as it sits between sits.

Smell is well rounded, very mellow, roasty dark malts and very mild citrus hop notes.

The taste is overwhelmingly malty, like a brown ale, but with a finish of tangy hops.

Alcohol is very present in the mouthfeel, which is def affecting drinkability. I could feel my ears turn red after the first few sips.

Not bad. Glad i tried it.

Bottle from Barley Wine in Copenhagen, then consumed later in the hotel. Described as Triple IPA by the owner of Barley Wine and the bartender at Lord Nelson, it sure seemed much more like an American Strong Ale to me. Dark brown color (too dark for the style) with a expressive nose and a super bitter hoppy flavor. A good brew, but not great.

500mL bottle thanks to Chris@Slowbeer.

Rich treacle on the pour, chocolate brown in the glass. Large heaving beige head dies away gradually leaving a strong lace lattice.

Heavily candied tropical and citrus aromas with moderate amounts of sweaty, oniony character. Strong brandy caramel and biscuity malt backbone. Some sharp herbal notes bring much needed relief from the richness. Pretty bracing.

Heavy maple syrup and treacle blending with pineapple, peach and resinous pine. Big, but straightforwardly enjoyable.

Syrupy, viscous and full. Carbonation is noticeable on the front palate but pretty quickly overwhelmed by the body. Bitterness is moderate, but pretty easy to miss against the richness.

Approachable despite the rich dark malt backbone. Feels like it warrants a more interesting and adventurous hop profile though.

This poured a cloudy dark mahogany with some light tan head. It smelled like the gummy coke bottle candy (?) with birch root and sassafras and juniper and very earthy barley. It tasted like birch root and juniper, with earthy caramel and some medicinal flavors. It was thick with some carbonation, and had a bitter/sour/dirty aftertaste. Overall this was a very strange beer that's hard to comprehend as a barleywine. It was very earthy and herbal, reminding me most of DFH's Sah'tea, but heavier. It had good body and the alcohol wasn't too noticeable, so it wasn't difficult to drink once I acclimated to the taste. Recommended if only for the novelty and experience (not for the quality or true enjoyment).

A-Darkest Barleywine I have ever seen. Coffee brow with no light penetration and a solid creamy beige head of about an inch. Noticeable sediment settling to the bottom, I am guessing the yeast.

S-Like other Barleywines, light but noticeable citrusy hops and the barnyard barley aspect. Smells lighter and crisper then it looks.

T-Sweet and rich malts balancing off the hops up front with the barley and yeast flavor hanging in the background. The malts remain the dominant character non the less.

M-Nearly as heavy as it looks. Not creamy but thick like some porters holding up the richness of the flavor to linger and not give way to the bite of alcohol.

D-Not unpleasant but sweeter then I would like, even more so then many imperial stouts. It is more akin to a strong dark ale or baltic porter in my opinion than a barleywine, and would be well suited for dessert.

The craftsmen at Nøgne Ø have had me captivated with their unique blend of European style and American boldness. I was definitely not going to let # 100 Barley Wine-Style Ale pass me by. Slender 500 ml. bottle, with a starkly attractive label style. The pour looked quite dark for a barleywine, while the head was three fingers tall and foamy. The smell was quite sweet and had me recall raisins, toffee, and cocoa, The taste was not typical of the style, as the malts felt very roasty and astringent. The bitterness was quite brazing as a result of the bone dry nature of the beer. The chocolate, roasted nuts, and smoke in the taste screamed Imperial Porter to me. A big blast of oak notes in the finish had me wondering whether this was barrel aged before bottling. Quite thin and fleeting in the mouth, this unusual Ale was well crafted, and sneaky in the alcohol presentation, but I would be hard pressed to call this a barleywine.

500 ml bottle. Served in a snifter, the beer pours a murky brown/red color with about an inch and a half tan head. Head retention and lacing are both good. Aroma is nice, it smells like brown sugar, caramel, dark fruit and some citrusy hops (grapefruit, apricot). It tastes like toasted/grainy malt, grassy and citrusy hops, and a bit of dark fruit. There's also a long lasting bitter hoppy finish. The hops overpower the malty flavors in this beer. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it's a bit creamy and is well carbonated. Drinkability is decent, it's not hard to drink at all. I think it's an OK enough brew, but I don't think it's something I'd buy very often.

A-Best attribute of this beer. Perfect amber color with exact cloudiness for barley wine. The right amount of carbonation. Pours a finger thick head that quickly dissipates to 1mm-2mm ring with lacing on top throughout drinking.

S-Extremely sweet up front with caramel notes, indistinguishable dark fruits. No pick up of either alcohol or hops.

T-Too sweet caramel with slight hint of dark fruit behind. Finishes shockingly bitter with too much hops on end. There is also an alcohol finish that is off putting. Every flavor on own is OK, but as whole not balanced.

M-Just above average as it needs to be creamier. It looks like it should be, but does not deliver.

O-Seeing it poured into a glass had me excited, but flavor at this time was a let down. I am going to age this beer for five years and see how it mellows.

Pours a beautiful dark brown color with hints of dark red and amber coming through. It has a huge, nice, fullfy head that leaves awesome lace. The smell is very rich and mainly of roasted malt, but it also has some spice to it...possibly some cinnamon. Also, the aroma has a bit of herbalness to it, which I find somewhat weird. The taste is similar. Big and malty, but still has that strange herbal character. It almost taste like mint leaves, or maybe some juniper. It is a little off putting to me, but I suppose it lightens it up too. Good beer, but far from my favorite Nogne O.

This beer poured out as a deep brown color with some orange highlights. The bead was thin but coated the glass pretty well with each sip. The smell of the beer was a little boozy, along with some cocoa and hops. The taste of the beer has a good balance of the things on the nose. The mouthfeel is pretty slick with a decent carbonation. Overall it's a pretty tasty barley wine.

Fruity nose classic IPA (not the barleywine as is sometimes said). Dark bronze color. We can see especially the mango into the nostrils.

At the entrance in the mouth, the taste is special, especially for a beer of this style, it looks a little alcohol fishing just before and before all, grate the mouth. Soon, we find the fruity hops (slightly outdated) and bitterness, in great power, comes tickle the taste buds.

However, for many IBU beer, it's still quite low and almost entirely a commercial low-level process that make reference to sell beer. Aside from that, the drink is good.

Found at the LCBO by accident and was quite surprised. Poured a dark and hazy brown was a decent head for 10%. Smell was slightly malty but the hop aroma overwhelmed it. The taste was slight malt on the fore front and then the bitter hop on the end. Was expecting more malt but was still a good brew. I prefer less hoppy beer but can respect a well made and balanced hopped dark ale. Pretty good beer from a brewery that I have yet to be disappointed by!

Dark brown color, small white head. A bit hazy.
Very hoppy (American) scent mixed with some chocolate. Some acid smell as well.
Acid and dark malt taste, some non-hops bitterness.

1 pint, 9 fluid ounce brown bottle without dating. Probably not a concern considering this was a limited edition of high-strength.

Pours very dark for a barley wine. Opaque dark brown with a sheen of creamy froth and excellent lace retention. The aroma suggests a stylistic hybrid. Chocolate malts are dominant, with suggestions of vinous dark fruits and American pine-hops at the edges. The flavors are something else again. Beer is nearly flavorless at first. A woody alcohol sting develop in the center, layered over very dry powdered cocoa and spiced cookie dough. Finishes with a dry pine-bark bite and leaves warming alcohol behind. The body is rich and creamy, with lots of carbonation for the strength.

The beer seems half-baked at this age. The alcohol is too strong (solvent-like really) and the other flavors aren't fully developed. Might mellow with age.

16.9oz bottle purchased from Spirit Haus, Amherst, MA.

Poured into a heavy glass chalice, formed a 1/2" brown head over the almost opaque dark brown brew. Head recedes graduallly, with sporadic but ample lacing. Aroma is dark grains, fresh green hops, and alcohol. Taste starts with a glimpse of maltiness, which becomes all about the hops from then on, with some alcohol presence noted at the close and beyond. Mouthfeel is a bit prickly due to the hops abundance, with not quite enough sweetness to smooth it out, and drinkability shares the same issue.

appearance: served in belgian chalice - cloudy amber body, light beige ring

a good barleywine, but hardly worth the hype i dont think. its nothing special. pours a redish whiskey color, with a moderate but quicly fleeting off white head. the nose is alcohol, old wood, dried red fruit, and caramel malts in excess. flavor is mostly similar to the nose. lots of sweetness up front, but it doesnt last, thankfully. that molasses spice stays around, but the sugar goes to alcohol before too long. also a surprising level of hops in the finish of this, which makes it more american to me than anything. average mouthfeel, light carbonation, lesser body than most, long finish, boozed up. i like it, but it doesnt stand out as wonderful or unique to me.

Served from a bomber bottle for Christmas.

A = A lovely brown color that shows a fair bit of light through when held up to a source. Light tan head.

S = Nice aroma filled with malt, chocolate, some warm spice, bread and some earthy hops. A good blend.

T = More of a spiced, earthy barley wine. Malt is there, but is not strongly sweet or caramel flavored. Hop flavor is pretty pronounced. Citrus rind, clove, dark bread.

M = Good carbonation, which keeps it from being too thick or syrupy. Nice balance.

O = Overall, a good barley wine with a different flavor profile than my usual American west coast style. Smooth and tasty.

A: Mahogany brown.. turbid. Head dissipates to thin ring of foam.

S: Cherries, licorice, alcohol, sweetness. Nice.

T: Sweet fruit, big malt character and a finishing of balancing hops. Its good!

M: Smooth and full bodied.

O: A dark, fruity, sweet American Barleywine. Its very enjoyable and they have done a good job hiding much of the alcohol.

Appearance: Pours a dark brown, near black body with a huge, foamy beige head. Copious amounts of lacing.

Smell: The aroma is a blending of freshly-peeled citrus fruits and burnt chocolate cookies.

Taste: Double Fudge cookies with a reasonable sweetness that blends into an oven-roasted fruitiness and the taste of creosote-soaked citrus hops. A mild smokiness appears midway, as does the taste of hearty nine-grain bread. Finishes dry and bitter with an extra helping of roast.

Mouthfeel: Medium-full body. Medium carbonation.

Drinkability: An interesting, unique hrbid beer for sure with plenty to offer and begs (if not requires) to be sipped.

Pitches out of the bottle virtually black, not imperial stout black, but close, as this dark purple-brown liquid lets no light through. The head is a fairly healthy tan rise and sticks in gobs.
It's all pine needle, pine bark, and pine sap on the nose, the woody portion of it mingles with traces of cocoa. Port traits arrive only after it sits awhile. The fact is, the malts only make a cursory appearance in the aroma.
In mouth, malt is a bit more pronounced, though secondary in every way to the hops. It begins with roasted grain, bakers chocolate, figs, and coffee. Maple syrup overrides it all, and carries it into the hop breakers. Here on out, it's all metallic pine tree, full of sap, bark, and dry needles. The hopping is interesting with its equal parts resin and wood and tannins. But they are so loud as to drown almost everything else out. Malt is electrocuted out. Even alcohol hardly finds a place. Had the hops been a tad juicier rather than parching acrid, it could sidle towards the IIPA realm, but they don't so that's out of the question.

So basically, it's just a gob of malt basted in bitter hops.

The body is medium-full, with sparse carbonation. At first, it almost seems too light, then it settles into something beefier. Nevertheless, it seems to belie the richness of the malt.
It's a very drinkable barleywine,in spite of it all, though it burns a little once it hits the esophagus, but never before.
I can't help but shake the impression of a cover band playing "Bigfoot Barleywine", especially with its bitter Columbus focus. It's a respectable interpretation, but when the original costs $10/sixer to the $7/ 500mL bottle here, I'll stick with the classic, as its parts are more integrated, and is simply better and cheaper.

All told, it's a decent hoppy b'wine, but seems more than a bit rote.

500ml bottle served in a Duvel tulip. Been saving this one for rating #100, how appropriate.

Pours brown with a two finger light tan head that holds together very nicely and leaves lots of lacing.

Big time aroma of resin hops up front, some citrus, but also plenty of sweet malts, caramel, dark fruits, some brown sugar, vanilla, a touch of chocolate. Quite complex on the nose.

Flavor starts with sweet caramel malts, brown sugar, vanilla, some chocolate, then follows with some bitter resinous hops on the finish.

Mouthfeel is very full and creamy, medium carbonation.

Is this a DIPA or a barleywine? I think it falls somewhere in between the two. An immensely enjoyable and unique brew.

Tried on-tap at the Local Taphouse in Darlinghurst on 30/10/2010.

A: Very dark brown with some tinges of red and a bubbly head.

N: Wow, there's the hop hit. Fresh hops which are very nice but I maybe expected them to be more musty in character than this. Hops very dominant.

T: Yes, the hops are still there. Really quite prominent.

M: Spot on for the style, fairly heavy but not quite as full as an Imperial Stout. Maybe a bit too much carbonation apparent through the mid-palate.

Overall, pretty good, though I admit I wasn't expecting quite the level of hops that appear in nose and taste. I imagine that's what differentiates an American barleywine from an English barleywine.

A reasonably vigorous pour produces a four-finger thick, darkish tinged, tan colored head in my Tripel Karmeliet tulip. The beer is a deeply concentrated, burnt amber color that just shows a deep, clear, concentrated ruby hue if held up to the light. This smells of sticky hop character even as I am pouring this beer. A closer inspection confirms this with notes of candied citrus peel, sweetened berry notes, sweet pine sap, orange blossom honey, a soft herbal reek that can lean towards garlic chive at times as well as a touch of menthol aromatics. As is typical with my experience of the new breed, hoppy northern European beers there is still a substantial malt backbone here that contributes a deep toasty grain character, and nice whole grain bread aromatics.

Hoppy from the first taste, this has a bracing bitterness that becomes more astringent and aggressive through to the lingering, bitingly hoppy finish. Lingering herbal notes, menthol, concentrated pine sap, bright bergamot, ruby-red grapefruit, tangerine, ample lychee form the biggest part of the flavor profile, but supporting hop-derived notes of light cured leather, some tobacco flavors, garlic chives and milkweed are also noticeable at a much more subtle level. The malt contributes lots of chewy, viscous body to this brew as well as some light toasted-almost-roasted touches in the finish, hop supporting caramel character, and some malty crushed cracker flavors in the middle that get drowned out by the caramelized malt sweetness by the finish. As the beer warms up in my glass it smoothes out just a bit with some of the harsher hop notes and the bitterness becoming a bit softer and a touch more integrated.

Definitely on the thick side of a double IPA, indeed more in line on this front with a Barley wine, but it certainly plays the hop card in spades as this is clearly the dominant character, even despite the interesting malt depth. This is one of those beers that really needs to warm up (even though it only started at 50°F / 10°C, it was still a bit too cool) and perhaps even breath a bit in order to lose a bit of the sharp, astringent hop edge. This really is just insanely hopped, though I find it quite enjoyable. I definitely am enjoying the depth the mares otter malt adds and even the slight roasted note from the chocolate malt is a nice addition.
