Poured into snifter:

Pours black with a creamy, staying, tan head. Very dark for a BW. Great head retention, especially considering the style and abv. Frothy lacing sticks.

The smell is of citrus and pine with dark fruits, grain and a hint of chocolate. A bit of booze comes through. Very different, but very nice.

The taste is of bittersweet chocolate with roasted notes (ala coffee-ish) with plenty of pine and citrus hop bitterness. A touch of warming alcohol and some vinuous notes come through late - not enough to interfere in the flavor, but to give a warmth that is appropriate for the style. English maltiness and yeast work well with the American hops - something that this brewery has done very well, in my experience.

This is pretty smooth. Even at room temperature, it doesn't quite hit as full-bodied as some other examples of the style, but it sure gets close enough.

This is a unique, different, darker Barleywine. It has a nice interaction of malts that show themselves well while allowing hops to be showcased. It's a shame to see this listed as "retired" as it is a nice treat that I certainly wouldn't mind having as an occasional "something different" treat, especially on a cool/cold evening!

Poured with a small but foamy head, which dissipated rather quickly but left a pleasing lacing. Pours a very very dark brown.

Very fruity (raisins, plums) with a lot of other dark malt characteristics. Pretty full on hops notes, I could tell this was going to be bitter before I noticed the IBU rating on the bottle. Very piney.

Bitter bitter bitter sweet. Bitterness hits first and lingers last. Really well balanced against the piney spicy fruitiness and caramel malty sweetness though. Theres not so much a roasty taste as the suggestion of one, probably down to that bitter sweet combination. Not as rich as the Mikkeller Big Worse, the only other barleywine I've tried up to now, but a lot better balanced.

Thick and fullbodied, carbonation is spot on (can't speak for the style, but the carbonation here is low yet noticeable). A little too sticky, I'm thinking this is a characteritic of the style I'm not used to yet.

It's drinkable. It's a sipper. I'm ok with this one.

Poured from a 16.9 ounce bottle into a pilsner glass. From notes. Reviewed 15 November 2011.

A: Dark ruby-red-brown. Damn pretty. Three fingers of head with unbudging retention. Some tiny bubbles.

S: Good. Loads of hops. Sticky fruit and sweet citrus (specifically, orange). Divine, but somehow limited...The slightest touch of skunk?

T/M: Phenomenal! The ultimately balanced beer. Very sweet; astringently bitter. Carbonation is present and successfully prevents any odious heaviness. The hops may have the upper hand, but it's a close call. Some molasses on the aftertaste. Noticeably strong.

O: A superlative barleywine; highly recommended. Still, at $9 it's expensive and not everyday fare. Still, I'd have another one.

A: On the very dark side of the Barley Wine spectrum. Appears black but when held up to the light yeilds some brown. A half finger of slightly off white head.

S: A solid if unremarkable nose. Tons of malt with a touch of dark fruit thrown in and a little bit of basement mustiness.

T: Tons of malt right up front. A nice dull sweetness then blam. Chocolate. Really awesome twist. Then comes the hint of dark fruit. Finished a little bitter from what is left of the hops and a little bit of roast.

M: Full bodied. Low carbonation.

D: This is a really nice beer. Nothing like a barley wine with a little time on it. The chocolate really threw me off and impressed me. Really solid beer.
