Props to peensteen for the hook-up on this treat.

A - Pours a murky brown colour, ruby red hue, finger of head with some retention and sporadic lacing.

S - Scent is dominated by citrus hop notes, earthy cedar notes, caramel, burnt toast and a hint of oak.

T - The citrus flavours dominate, earthy cedar notes continue to come through alongside a heavy rye bready malt flavour, citrus bitterness lingers alongside a hint of ABV heat.

M - Medium bodied, smooth and a touch of heat on the finish.

O - A tasty brew and one of my favourites from this brewery. Super glad to have had an opportunity to try it. Incredibly drinkable whose ABV goes almost unnoticed.

Huge head sticks around forever. Cola colored beer, no light passes through. Impressive, unusual carbonation for a barleywine. Heavy body.
Aromas of Raisin, fig, dark chocolate, coffee.
A good malt balance without going over the top, like some American barley wines.
I breathe in the alcohol and dry coca flavors.
The hops come out in the aftertaste with a dry grassy feel at the back on my tongue.

This beer poured a dark black (barley wine?) that looked a little smoky through the dimple in the bottom of my tulip with no real color other than the hazy smoke. This was a bit odd for me considering the style. The head was a nice dirt white film.

Smelled of acidic pine and lemon with a distant cocoa and caramel. There was also a distinct leathery smell along with some strawberries.

Tastes dry and hoppy with a tingly bite that picked up some sweet candy corn and a light coffee. This was followed by an astringent dry grain matched up with a similar hop dryness. The artful blend hid a lot well.

Feels heavy, frothy and foamy, but tasty. Seems to work well with the flavors.

Nice, but oddly dark. I enjoyed the use of hops in this one.

Review from notes - Norway 2011

Three fingers of forthy and thick light tan head fills the top of the glass, sporting a fantastic level of retention for a 10% ABV beer. The body looks big, being an incredibly hazy caramel amber hue. Spongey sheets of lace stick firmly to the glass as the head slowly dissipates.

Heavy on the toasted malts and caramel in the nose. Very bready. The hops come in a sweet and syrupy grapefruit form with spritzy lemon notes behind. A date sweetness makes me think of how viscous the body is. The high ABV is well hidden in this big and syrupy barleywine. There's nothing mindblowing about the nose, but it's still an all around good smelling beer.

Hoppy upfront but not overwhelmingly bitter. The hops come in a more earthy and grassy flavour. The lemony zing is still there and present from start to finish. The malts impart a thick heftiness to the body. I liken their sweetness to caramel drizzled rye bread. The alcohol comes unobtrusively in the finish.

The body is smooth and syrupy with a good level of tingly carbonation. The alcohol is present but its only real indicator is in the heftiness it gives to the body.

A well rounded and tastey American Barleywine. With that being said, nothing stands out to make it outstanding. This is my first Nogne beer and I liked where I started. I'll be taking full advantage of my easy access to their other offerings.

Pours a five finger light tan head that fades slowly leaving a good lace. Totally black color. Medium carbonation and very heavy bodied. Sweet malty nose. Label lists this as barleywine but its more like an IPA. Flavor is strong hops with caramel, smooth yet bitter almost cough syrup with lingering bitterness. High ABV completely hidden. Good but not what I was expecting. $7.95 for a 500ml bottle from John's Marketplace Portland, OR.

Thick, long-lasting head. The broth is dark brown, but light shines through pretty easily. Nice blanket lace that sticks around throughout the tasting.

Sweet chocolate-caramel aroma. Light hop in the background. Attractive and inviting.

Not as sweet as most Barley Wines, but it is very rich. There's an excellent hop bite to balance the beer. This has been a superb balance to tangy barbecue ribs. In the aftertaste, the alcohol shows up along with lingering sugars and hop bitterness. If there is such a thing as a balanced Barley Wine, this would be it.

A - Pours cola brown... good head retention. Lacing up the wazoo.

S - Big ass bag o malt.

T - Gigantic malt presence followed by perfectly lined up hops. A nice mix.

M - Thick, really thick. Lots of thick malt followed by heavy bitter hops. It evens out well.

D - If I had a 6 pack, I would drink it.

A- Big two-fingered off-white head on a dark brown body. Awesome head retention and lacing.

S- Big whiff of earthy hops

T- Lower hop profile than the nose would indicate, still there though.

M- Medium to medium thick mouthfeel. Medium carbonation.

D/O- Solid interpretation from Nøgne Ø. Glad they brought it back and at a nice price point ($9) to boot. Would buy again, recommend for barleywine lovers.

The first glass poured a dark chestnut brown, while the second glass was just as dark, but hazier as well. Tastes of dark fruits, with breaded malt and a slight roasted chocolate to go with the hops in the finish. For being a big beer at 10%, it does drink pretty good as there is no alcohol burn. But your body definately feels it! A good barleywine overall.

Brown and hazy with a small tan head. Aroma is sweet malts with brown sugar. Flavor is sweet rich malt that's nicely supported by a moderate bitterness. The malts definitely lead but the hops show its American influence. A creamy, silky feel with a nice low carbonation. I'm not a big barleywine fan but I enjoyed this one.

Deep chestnut red body smother with a very thick, very chunky off-white, sticky head. Dates and prunes along with molasses, almost smokey grains, caramel and toffee in the aroma. Surprisingly mild taste overall (perhaps due to the relative age of this bottle); soft depths of sweetness bolstered with a nicely balanced bitterness and alcohol warmth. Heavy mouthfeel, vinous, smooth.

A big beer with a deceivingly mild character. I was expecting to be hammered with malt sweetness and a strong, boozy taste, but this one came across quite easy drinking compared to many other offerings from the northern Europe regions. Perhaps this all came from letting the bottle sit for most of the year in a relatively temperate environment, but no matter what, this is one fine and approachable big beer.

500ml bottle poured into tulip 9/4/13

A dark brownish amber with enough clarity to see a 1/3 of the distance to the other side under the foam, looks thick with some bubbles struggling to stream up the side of the glass. Some random chunks floating around and a very long lasting light brown head leaves plenty of random unorganized lace deep down the glass

S piney citrus rind and a heavy blast of caramel, herbal hops and faint coco powder mix with some faint booze and dark bread

T a slight nutty aspect seems out of place but works, more malty sweetness mixing up with some piney rind, old DIPA or a young BW you tell me,some faint milk chocolate s it wrms

M thick and syrupy with low carbonation but enough for it to work, sticky on the lips with a bitter kick, rind, burnt brown sugar and pine resin lingers long on the finish

O some dark malt notes add a strange mix to this brew, to me it seems lost between styles or perhaps I caught it at an awkward age, either way I like it a lot but would rather have it super fresh or in a couple years

pretty solid brew with a well hidden 10% waiting to kick your ass, still pretty hoppy for a BW and the malt has some dark notes that I don't think works against it but leaves something unique in your glass. Not only am I going to grab one for long term aging I'm going to look for a fresh batch out of hopped up curiosity

Thanks to my brother for bringing this one to me from Louisiana.

The beer pours a murky medium-brown color with a large, cream-colored head. the aroma is licorice with some nutmeg and malt. The flavor is caramel malt along with piney and grassy hops. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

This was an older bottle so the hops probably faded a bit, but it was still enjoyable.

# 100 opens to a sweet, spicy, citrusy, complex aroma that instantly speaks to a well-crafted beer. There are lovely light sugars in here, including strawberry, berry, orange, and apricot fruit esters on the light side, and prune, fig, raisin, black cherry, and date on the dark, as well as touches of candi sugar and almost Stevia-like sweetness about the fringes. These are countered by lemon and lemongrass, as well as sweet pink grapefruit and touches of grapefruit rind and pine from the hops, and a nice toast crust, biscuit, and Grape Nuts cereal layer from the grains. The aromas do drift more toward the sweet and effervescent, recalling fruit spritzers, but enough of a cognac touch of vanilla and caramel remains to add a layer of light alcohol vapors. As a whole, the nose is very nice, though somewhat lighter than could be expected from a 10% ABV Barleywine, but does feature an excellent range of fruits and sugars, tempered well by vanilla, citrusy hops, and breads.

On the tongue, the beer opens with a marked sweetness that is almost instantly joined by a strange heavy raisin fruit ester base, almost as if raisin puree had been added pre-fermentation. The raisin overtone does carry touches of date, fig, and prune, but is largely raisin-y, and joined by peppery, spicy edges that make this seem more alcoholic fruitcake than beer. Largely gone here are the light fruit esters from the nose, the orange coming across on the tongue more like blood orange liqueur. Thick swaths of brown bread and toast crust add earthiness, and there’s a good layer of lemon, lemongrass, grapefruit, and light pine resin from the hops. But the major flavor here is the raisin/dark fruit layer, which combines with the vanillas, caramels, and alcohol burn to make this seem like raisin liqueur mixed with brandy or cognac. These flavors dominate the aftertaste as well, which lingers on the tongue for a good while. Mouthfeel is medium, and carbonation is medium.

Overall, this is one of the stranger Barleywines on the market, and the overabundance of raisin and dark fruit esters is initially shocking, and can be slightly wearing over time, like trying to eat an entire loaf of spiced fruitcake in one sitting. The beer is definitely worth trying for the experience, but be aware that this is very much a sipping beer, and the strong flavors and heavy alcohol burn might prove too much for some.

1pt. 9fl oz bottle into bruges tulip glass
A: Pours a lighter head than most barleywines, a bit of a slightly off white head. The body is a deep brown color and has a nice hazy to it.
S: Big up front, sweet fig aroma, woohoo love those figy barleywines.
T/M: A big up front sweet taste, the hops have put a very bitter finish on this brew. The body has a very sweet and malty character. The hop profile in this American Barley is strong, one that notes a heavy hop presences, but shows a little fading.
D: A nice overall barley, one that if I saw in a store I would grab. This one is a high class sipper.

Presentation: Poured from 1 pt 9 fl oz brown bottle into an Imperial pint glass. Normally these go into my Duvel chalice, but it is dirty tonight. Label is simple Nøgne Ø style with a description on the back of both the beer and the brewery. 22.5 degrees P, 80 IBU, 10% ABV.

Appearance: pours with 1 1/2 finger of tan head. This settles slowly, dropping to a thin yet complete coating of foam and leaving behind nearly complete lacing coverage. The beer itself is a reddish muddy brown and has substantial sedimentation and particulate suspension.

Smell: Caramel malt with orange citrus hop notes. Hints of tart cherries.

Taste: Sharp and biting carbonation upfront, followed by a slightly sweet cherry caramel flavor. Hop bitterness throughout, though nicely counterbalanced by a solid malt backbone.

Mouthfeel: As previously mentioned, hella carbonation. Body is good.

Drinkability: All in all, a nice barleywine with sufficient kick from both hops and alcohol. Not a favorite however, and not one I will be tracking down again.

Bottle: Poured a dark brown color ale with a nice medium foamy head with slightly better then average retention. Aroma of bitter and slightly piney hops is mix with some nice caramel malt. Taste is somewhat reminiscent of an hoppy porter (maybe because of the color) with load of roasty/sweet caramel malt and a bitter and slightly piney finish. Body has real creamy texture with medium carbonation and no alcohol could be detected. If I had to rate to style, then I’m not sure this would score very highly since it is quite off for the style. Since I am not rating to style, I thought this was a really good beer that doesn’t really fit into a define style.
