500 ml bottle purchased from Liquid Solutions about a year ago for nine dollars, consumed on 1/9/09, reviewed from notes, poured into my Dogfish Head snifter, color is a dark brown with minimal light going through, 3/4 inch creamy beige head, lasts a long time, good lacing too, aroma is entirely filled with hops, and it seemed like lots of Chinook was in there, other scents included wheat, chocolate, and roasted malts, flavor was rather hoppy, heard this was supposed to be a DIPA when I was Stone a few weeks ago, there was some issues with the labeling before it was imported, reminded me a lot of a dark India pale ale in fact, much more than a barleywine, bitterness overpowered a lot of the other flavors but I was not complaining, tasted more of the malt by the end when it warmed, pine and grapefruit were around in the finish and mixed uniquely with the sweet and roasty accents, mouthfeel is dry, bitter, and slightly roasted, medium bodied, good level of carbonation, taste lingered, could drink a lot of this considering it is ten percent, alcohol is hidden well, dry enough to make the sweet qualities balance out and then some, good drinkability, glad the brewers did not keep this all for themselves and released a good amount of it commercially, wish I had more of this to cellar, a great beer from a great Norway brewery, one of the better beers from overseas that I have had in a while, recommended

Pours a very dark brown colored body, with a huge foamy creamy tan colored head, extremely lasting, with okay lacing. Has a dark fruity aroma, hoppy, sickly sweet smelling. Some strong raisin nose. Smokey taste. Light body. Dark coffee taste. Tasty.

I wouldn't say this beer looks bad, but for the style, it's just not right. Looking at this, I would never, ever guess this is a barleywine. Looks just like a stout, it's black with a big tan head with great lacing and retention. Just no evidence of barleywine in the appearance. The smell is really incredible. There's a lot of sweetness underneath, I can imagine there being a lot more hoppiness in the smell when this was fresh, but there is still a clear, crisp hop smell. Kind of floral and spicy with a bit of citrus in the smell. There is still a slight smell of dark malts, which is a bit uncharacteristic, but I can forgive it for the rest of the smell. (I feel a bit self-contradictory now). The taste is great at this age. Very smooth and sweet, almost creamy. There a good deep, dark fruity character to it, with just a tiny bit of caramel, and I even get a good rush of bitterness. The creaminess is really the shining moment, making the mouthfeel perfect. There is almost no alcohol presence or hotness. I found myself constantly reaching to have more of this. And it was gone quickly. I feel bad as I post this for the first score, but I think it's appropriate, considering the style. But barleywine might be the best category, and I wouldn't suggest dialing it down as it might miss out on some of the rest of the high points. If you can get your hands on it, drink this.

Big head for this style, seems to keep on keepin' on pretty well, with some bigger bubbles nested on top of a grayish brown foam. Very dark for a barleywine, almost black but with a significant amount of bronzed highlighting with any light in the room. Great look.

Tons of dark fruits on the nose here, that's the first thing I notice. Definitely a chocolate edge here and there. Vinous for sure, even a little bit of Coca Cola-caramel sweetness.

Richly sweet and full, with a huge caramel presence along with a solid woodiness, chocolate, and dark fruit. Tons of hops, lending at turns citric and pine to the flavor. Bitter, but plenty sweet.

Finish is amazingly chocolatey, like a full-bodied stout, with a huge hop presence still nestled in. Mouthfeel is right on the mark; not as large as a stout but hinting towards it. A double IPA with two tons of barley: one caramel and one chocolate.

This is incredible, and a great gift. Many thanks.

My first venture into this brewery & I'm underwhelmed, even though I am a big fan of barleywines.

The most impressive piece of this was the massive foaming even with a gentle pour, but I can't drink with my eyes. Smell is much less subtle than most barleywines; some other style that I just can't place.

Taste is acceptable. Again, not the smoothness nor the silky sweetness I like in a bareleywine, still untamed, boozy, with a taste & smell like raw roughage. Not bad, but not good, either.

Pretty average; maybe the roughness is in the youth of the beer, perhaps it'll smooth out & improve with age. More than likely I'll never find out.

A pretty dark reddish brown with brown head.

Hoppy smell with intense citrus fruits. But also a decent amount of malt aromas.

Taste has a complex hoppiness to it with pine and grape fruit flavours.

Rough, intense mouthfeel. Brilliant, but perhaps a little weak in the finish.

Very, very drinkable. Easily the best beer I had on new years eve.

A 500 mL bottle.

A: The barleywine is beautifully dark, midnight black with crimson red highlights. A thick white head is lacing around the sides of my glass.

S: The nose is a caramel, toffee brown ale with a blast of citrus hops. The aroma is overwhelming, grainy to a fault with a big enough hop profile to match it.

T: Nearly as big as the nose, the body is loaded with malts. Darker malts yield a caramel/toffee flavor that manages to outpace the hops. Those hops, while big, aren't as strong as you'd expect. The hops are citrusy, sweet with a grassy undertone. As big as they are, they can't overtake the imperial brown ale.

M: Full but inviting, this is a rarely big American barleywine that shows off more malts than hops. I'm enjoying this one.

D: Too big, this barleywine is too big. One bottle is more than enough for one sitting.

This beer has a unique, beguiling flavor. The flavors are so well blended that it's difficult for me to pull them apart. Good head, good color...it meets Barleywine standards. The edge is in the blended flavor. I hope to find more of it here in Chicago.

Reviewed on 10/9/08. Bottle. Pours black with a thick light tan head. Aroma of slight hops and lots of caramel malt and apple skins with a slight roastiness. Flavor of light roasted malt, light bitter chocolate, with a hoppy finish. Very ASA like or even stout/porter like with the roasted malt presence. Creamy, smooth mouthfeel. Nice beer!

500ml bottle, served in a snifter. Bottle conditioned. Pours a deep reddish brown with two fingers of off white head. Plenty of carbonation. Piney hops in the aroma at first. Malt comes out in the aroma as it warms. Deep malty flavor. Hop bitterness in the finish, but not as much as the aroma would suggest. Very balanced, not a hit you over the head beer. Chocolate malt and fruit develops as it warms. Alcohol is not really evident. Long dry hoppy finish.

16.9oz. brown bottle, purchased at Sam's in Chicago the day after DLD08, poured into a snifter.

A: Pours a very deep brown with some ruby tinting on the edges when backlit. 3 fingers of light mocha head forms from a semi rough pour into the somewhat small snifter. Very good retention and good lacing.

S: Very nice malty aroma. Toffee and light dark fruits. There's a soft hop presence, a good bit of citrus and juicy fruits along with some floral, spring aromas. A bit of deeper malt character... maybe chocolate but doesn't have a sweet character to this part of the malts. Alcohol seems to have mellowed with age and adds a pleasant depth.

T/M: A good balance between potent hops and potent malts. Good bitterness level, especially with the age. Some more of the lightly citrusy hops but more of the Euro style floral, grassy, and earthy hops. More of the toffee and light dark fruits. The savory 'chocolate' character is much more pronounced, almost reminding me of the dark bready character of a good doppelbock. Alcohol again lends that gently touch of depth and even a bit of warmth in the swallow. Body is medium full with a great smoothly carbonation. Perfect feel.

D: The 10% is nicely mellowed and the feel makes this drink way too easy. Great depth of flavors makes you slow down, contemplate, and savor the entire brew. Very good.

A - Poured out a dark brown color with a creamy, soft, tan, one finger head. It left sticky, intricate patches of lace.

S - It smelled of sweet malt, caramel, candy sugar and floral notes.

T - It tasted of sweet caramel malt with a subtle bitter hop bite. Sugary sweet with a smooth grassy kick.

M - It was soft, smooth and somewhat dry. A medium to full-bodied beer.

D - This is a very good barleywine. Too bad it is retired.

50 cl bottle shared with Bananamaniac @ Bishops Arms, Karlstad.

Pours a dark brown color with a nice head.

Smell is very interesting and good. Very hoppy, with notes of citrus and grapefruit. Nice.

Taste is bitter and hoppy with lots of citrus fruits and stuff like that. Notes of chocolate and malt can also be found. I also think I can note som nuts. Ends bitter, though I think it was more bitter last winter I had it (well... it's some months ago, so...). Balanced.

Mouthfeel is very outstanding. Very filling in the mouth... pretty smooth.

A very nice beer!

Been hanging on to this one for several months, and decided to break it out tonight to share with my barleywine-loving friend.

Pours a dense dark brown with ruby highlights when held to the light. Tons of head, as much as you want (that's what she said), that's dense, frothy, light tan, and leaves a beautiful lacing as it drops. Amazing retention for the 10%.

Aroma is of sherry, plum, black currant, licorice, sweet cream, caramel and butter rum, sweet black bread, pine-needle hops, flowers (rose, buttercup, honeysuckle). I had this at 4.5, but I really have to give it a 5. Amazing.

Flavor is much like the nose, with many of the same nuances, but much more harsh bitterness towards the finish... comes in and balances the sweetness very nicely, and overrides at the very end to leave a lingering grapefruit peel/black bread bitterness with pine resin galore. Alcohol comes in just slightly at the end, but far less than you'd expect for 10%.

Mouthfeel is smooth and silky, almost chewy, with medium low carbonation and a warm, bitter-dry finish.

What can I say? I think this is easily the best barleywine I have ever had. Easily. The complexity is unrivaled in the style, and the balance is very well done. Get your hands on this one.

Retired...I'm thinking not. It seems to me this brew #100 is still being produced, seasonally at least.

From the 500ml. brown long-neck, pours a very dark brown ale with a strong two-finger plus head of tan. Good carbonation and head retention keep the looks alive, heavy sticky lace adds a nice touch as well.

Evergreen sweet with a heavy earthy malt nose, upwell with authority. Big fruty bouquet with lots of hops and a ton of malt, are very apparent. Really smells delicious.

Evergreen hops start things off sweet, then back down to let the malts take over. The middle is caramelly and then wham, the hops kick in some serious bitterness that lingers for a while. The alcohol is pushing through all the while, giving this brew a huge flavor burst from start to finish. Although the body is lighter than heavy, the flavors come through very strong and very tasty.

A very big quality ale, that can hold it's own to any barleywine put up against it. I recommend this beauty to any barleywine fiend. Age should further enhance this brew, worth cellaring.

Retired.

A: Poured a dark, opaque caramel/cola with a creamy moderate beige head that left a good lacing.

S: a sweet roasted malt character, fresh pine, and some citrus.

T: warm and biscuity, with some dried citrus and soft roasted malt notes. There were some light whiskey cask notes sneaking through in the background as well as some dark chocolate, pine, and light sweet molasses. Some dry pine, dark roasted malt provide a nice closing before fading quickly and clean. The flavor is extraoridinary smooth, earthy and well balanced from start to finish.

M: silky and smooth with a soft palate and some dry bittering Columbus hops coming through similar to an Anderson valleys hop ottin but more tame.

D: The flavor was very refined, and soft making for an incredible drinkability factor. Quite possibly the smoothest and most refined barleywine style ive ever had. An incredible recommend.

Nøgne Ø is in my opinion one of the best breweries in the nordic countries. And this is a really fine brew that is great to share with a friend.

Pours a deep brown colour with a nice beige foam, looks really nice actually. But there's a lot of yeast particles floating around.

The smell is really interesting, lots of citrus fruits and some chocolate. Some wonderful hops in the smell too!

Taste is pretty similar to the smell with a nice bitterness and lots of citrus fruits and notes of chocolate and oats. It's a quite sweet beer actually and the high ABV makes it great to sip on for an hour or two.

Smell: sweet malt - caramell, toffee, some chocolate, dried fruits and american hops (citric, grassy, a bit earthy).

Taste: really nice smooth toffee, with some chocolate, caramell and burnt notes, cherry, dried fruits (raisins, plum, figs) and american hops. Its quite bitter, as well, but not in a brutal way.
I was really impressed by this one. Its very balanced, with lots of sweet, dark malt and a solid hoppy bitterness. Heja Norge!

Pours dark brown, with amber hued edges. A one inch light brown head forms on top and lingers with excellent retention and leaves some lacing behind.

The aroma is quite pleasing. Fruity, raisins and plums with a bit of spice. Some darker malt, giving some caramel tones. Sweet sugar, and a contrasting note of hops. The hops profile seems fairly floral. Really a fairly complex and quite pleasing nose.

The taste is very interesting. Some dark roasty malting for sure giving some caramel, chocolate, and a bit of toasted grain. A bit of fruity, raisin and plum with a slightly bitter finish. Quite interesting for a barleywine. Not quite what I look for in a barleywine, but I love that it's different than most that I've come across.

The mouthfeel is great IMO. Fairly thick and full bodied, slightly creamy. Lightly carbonated and viscious.

Drinkability is moderate to high. It's an intriguing Barleywine which is what I love about it, though the flavor is not the best I've come across. The alcohol is well hidden by my estimation and it is fairly easy to drink. A pleasant experience and a nice twist. Consider me a fan.

500 mL bottle from Green's, Ponce location. Poured into a crystal goblet which, though not originally intended for beer, certainly served admirably (last time I visit my folks w/out proper glassware though).

Appearance: Pours a thick, deep chestnut brown, nasty liquid with a fuzzy, foamy, bubbly tan-colored head with average retention. Lacing is very attractive, sheet-like, web-like in places, with fine bubbles. Very inviting.

Aroma: Thoroughly hoppy and pleasant while not being too pungent. You get light pine, some citrus notes, and those nice dark malts: coffee, springlike, light; dark fruits, raisins being the dominant note; some lighter roasty notes, toffee for instance. There's a light estery, spicy alcohol note as well, but it doesn't object to taking a backseat to

Taste: Fantastically balanced. It's essentially a dark American barleywine, highly hopped, with plenty of dark malts and fruity overtones. I remember there being a big fuss about how this one was labeled (barleywine or DIPA? Age it or drink it fresh!?) - well, this one's been sitting for a while now, so I don't know how pronounced the hops originally were, but I like where they're at now. There's a nice pronounced bitterness, spicy but mellow, which melds well with the load of piney, leafy Western hop notes, with faint citrus coming in about mid-sip; there's plenty of fruity esters, both light and dark, with raisins, dates, and hints of pear, I think; and though there's a faint estery alcohol in the finish, it only becomes noticeable as things warm, and by that point this beer was near gone - pretty damn good.

Mouthfeel: Big and fluffy, and though it starts out smooth, it falls apart a little quickly. Also, seems to go a little downhill as it warms. Body is medium, carbonation is light but present, and it's pretty damn thick through 'til the finish.

Drinkability: Glad I tried this one - there've been bottles on the shelf at Green's for quite some time, though there seems to be only one left at the time of this review. I might pick it up myself, but if someone else gets to it first, I hope they enjoy it: this is a tasty beer, bold, big, well-hopped, well-hopped, and well-respected by yours truly. Recommended if you see it.

Poured into snifter:

Pours black with a creamy, staying, tan head. Very dark for a BW. Great head retention, especially considering the style and abv. Frothy lacing sticks.

The smell is of citrus and pine with dark fruits, grain and a hint of chocolate. A bit of booze comes through. Very different, but very nice.

The taste is of bittersweet chocolate with roasted notes (ala coffee-ish) with plenty of pine and citrus hop bitterness. A touch of warming alcohol and some vinuous notes come through late - not enough to interfere in the flavor, but to give a warmth that is appropriate for the style. English maltiness and yeast work well with the American hops - something that this brewery has done very well, in my experience.

This is pretty smooth. Even at room temperature, it doesn't quite hit as full-bodied as some other examples of the style, but it sure gets close enough.

This is a unique, different, darker Barleywine. It has a nice interaction of malts that show themselves well while allowing hops to be showcased. It's a shame to see this listed as "retired" as it is a nice treat that I certainly wouldn't mind having as an occasional "something different" treat, especially on a cool/cold evening!

A surprising look as I poured this one into a snifter. A deep dark brown color, looked thick, add to that a solid creamy head. The smell was not very strong, some chocolate hints. The first sip verified the thickness of this beer, which was in contrast to my previous barley wine experiences. It still has a barely wine taste, just a chocolate/malty strength added to it. I like it, don't get me wrong. The thickness helped balance the strong carbonization, and made it go down easy. An excellent beer to have one evening, by itself.

Bottled on March 27th 2008 best before 2013, batch no. 348, just got it thru private importing services bieropholie.

Pours a murky medium brown, thick head and medium carbonation that helped to keep a solid crown of foam on the beer. Solid aroma of pungent, cat piss, piney, and grassy hops. Also a hint of smoked malt. Futher smoke malt prensence in flavor with a hint of meaty smoky a bit cloying caramel maltiness.

What's unusual is a coating slick mouthfeel that envellops your mouth making you wonder if the beer is flat. Bubbles are present so I'm thinking maybe theres a unusualy large amount of cristal malts used in this beer.

I'm gonna sit on the rest of these ales to see what happens, all in all a very interresting experience.

Pours a syrupy dark brown with a two finger tan head.

Aroma is sweet caramel molasses roasty malty explosion of thick barleywine goodness.

Fairly sweet beer and more roasted, almost smoked flavor than what I have experienced in barleywines before. Almost a stout character with a touch of chocolate. Also, some spices I can't place, similar to cinnamon or nutmeg but more subtle and balanced than spiced beers I have had. Must be massively hopped, as a slightly citrusy and bitter hop character appears through the malts on the finish. If I had a wish list, the only thing I would put on it would be "a touch more carbonation".

This is a real eye opener and worth tracking down if you can find a bottle. I wonder how it will age?

Pours a coca-cola-lish brown with some dark garnet highlights. Pretty light beige head that slowly recedes with each sip. The aroma is very complex, lots of dark malty nuts with some soft plum juice, and maybe some caramel. The taste is very heavy on the dark fruis. Roasted prnes, baked cherries. A splash of roasted malts gives a grainy bread taste and texture. Very warm nd fruity palat, and actuly becomes a little winey as it warms. Great sipping beer and a great dark barely wine form the Norse.
