A - Poured out a dark brown color with a creamy, soft, tan, one finger head. It left sticky, intricate patches of lace.

S - It smelled of sweet malt, caramel, candy sugar and floral notes.

T - It tasted of sweet caramel malt with a subtle bitter hop bite. Sugary sweet with a smooth grassy kick.

M - It was soft, smooth and somewhat dry. A medium to full-bodied beer.

D - This is a very good barleywine. Too bad it is retired. (430 characters)

50 cl bottle shared with Bananamaniac @ Bishops Arms, Karlstad.

Pours a dark brown color with a nice head.

Smell is very interesting and good. Very hoppy, with notes of citrus and grapefruit. Nice.

Taste is bitter and hoppy with lots of citrus fruits and stuff like that. Notes of chocolate and malt can also be found. I also think I can note som nuts. Ends bitter, though I think it was more bitter last winter I had it (well... it's some months ago, so...). Balanced.

Mouthfeel is very outstanding. Very filling in the mouth... pretty smooth.

Been hanging on to this one for several months, and decided to break it out tonight to share with my barleywine-loving friend.

Pours a dense dark brown with ruby highlights when held to the light. Tons of head, as much as you want (that's what she said), that's dense, frothy, light tan, and leaves a beautiful lacing as it drops. Amazing retention for the 10%.

Aroma is of sherry, plum, black currant, licorice, sweet cream, caramel and butter rum, sweet black bread, pine-needle hops, flowers (rose, buttercup, honeysuckle). I had this at 4.5, but I really have to give it a 5. Amazing.

Flavor is much like the nose, with many of the same nuances, but much more harsh bitterness towards the finish... comes in and balances the sweetness very nicely, and overrides at the very end to leave a lingering grapefruit peel/black bread bitterness with pine resin galore. Alcohol comes in just slightly at the end, but far less than you'd expect for 10%.

Mouthfeel is smooth and silky, almost chewy, with medium low carbonation and a warm, bitter-dry finish.

What can I say? I think this is easily the best barleywine I have ever had. Easily. The complexity is unrivaled in the style, and the balance is very well done. Get your hands on this one. (1,246 characters)

Retired...I'm thinking not. It seems to me this brew #100 is still being produced, seasonally at least.

From the 500ml. brown long-neck, pours a very dark brown ale with a strong two-finger plus head of tan. Good carbonation and head retention keep the looks alive, heavy sticky lace adds a nice touch as well.

Evergreen sweet with a heavy earthy malt nose, upwell with authority. Big fruty bouquet with lots of hops and a ton of malt, are very apparent. Really smells delicious.

Evergreen hops start things off sweet, then back down to let the malts take over. The middle is caramelly and then wham, the hops kick in some serious bitterness that lingers for a while. The alcohol is pushing through all the while, giving this brew a huge flavor burst from start to finish. Although the body is lighter than heavy, the flavors come through very strong and very tasty.

A very big quality ale, that can hold it's own to any barleywine put up against it. I recommend this beauty to any barleywine fiend. Age should further enhance this brew, worth cellaring. (1,059 characters)

Retired.

A: Poured a dark, opaque caramel/cola with a creamy moderate beige head that left a good lacing.

S: a sweet roasted malt character, fresh pine, and some citrus.

T: warm and biscuity, with some dried citrus and soft roasted malt notes. There were some light whiskey cask notes sneaking through in the background as well as some dark chocolate, pine, and light sweet molasses. Some dry pine, dark roasted malt provide a nice closing before fading quickly and clean. The flavor is extraoridinary smooth, earthy and well balanced from start to finish.

M: silky and smooth with a soft palate and some dry bittering Columbus hops coming through similar to an Anderson valleys hop ottin but more tame.

D: The flavor was very refined, and soft making for an incredible drinkability factor. Quite possibly the smoothest and most refined barleywine style ive ever had. An incredible recommend. (901 characters)

Nøgne Ø is in my opinion one of the best breweries in the nordic countries. And this is a really fine brew that is great to share with a friend.

Pours a deep brown colour with a nice beige foam, looks really nice actually. But there's a lot of yeast particles floating around.

The smell is really interesting, lots of citrus fruits and some chocolate. Some wonderful hops in the smell too!

Taste is pretty similar to the smell with a nice bitterness and lots of citrus fruits and notes of chocolate and oats. It's a quite sweet beer actually and the high ABV makes it great to sip on for an hour or two. (608 characters)

Smell: sweet malt - caramell, toffee, some chocolate, dried fruits and american hops (citric, grassy, a bit earthy).

Taste: really nice smooth toffee, with some chocolate, caramell and burnt notes, cherry, dried fruits (raisins, plum, figs) and american hops. Its quite bitter, as well, but not in a brutal way.
I was really impressed by this one. Its very balanced, with lots of sweet, dark malt and a solid hoppy bitterness. Heja Norge! (441 characters)

Pours dark brown, with amber hued edges. A one inch light brown head forms on top and lingers with excellent retention and leaves some lacing behind.

The aroma is quite pleasing. Fruity, raisins and plums with a bit of spice. Some darker malt, giving some caramel tones. Sweet sugar, and a contrasting note of hops. The hops profile seems fairly floral. Really a fairly complex and quite pleasing nose.

The taste is very interesting. Some dark roasty malting for sure giving some caramel, chocolate, and a bit of toasted grain. A bit of fruity, raisin and plum with a slightly bitter finish. Quite interesting for a barleywine. Not quite what I look for in a barleywine, but I love that it's different than most that I've come across.

The mouthfeel is great IMO. Fairly thick and full bodied, slightly creamy. Lightly carbonated and viscious.

Drinkability is moderate to high. It's an intriguing Barleywine which is what I love about it, though the flavor is not the best I've come across. The alcohol is well hidden by my estimation and it is fairly easy to drink. A pleasant experience and a nice twist. Consider me a fan. (1,128 characters)

500 mL bottle from Green's, Ponce location. Poured into a crystal goblet which, though not originally intended for beer, certainly served admirably (last time I visit my folks w/out proper glassware though).

Appearance: Pours a thick, deep chestnut brown, nasty liquid with a fuzzy, foamy, bubbly tan-colored head with average retention. Lacing is very attractive, sheet-like, web-like in places, with fine bubbles. Very inviting.

Aroma: Thoroughly hoppy and pleasant while not being too pungent. You get light pine, some citrus notes, and those nice dark malts: coffee, springlike, light; dark fruits, raisins being the dominant note; some lighter roasty notes, toffee for instance. There's a light estery, spicy alcohol note as well, but it doesn't object to taking a backseat to

Taste: Fantastically balanced. It's essentially a dark American barleywine, highly hopped, with plenty of dark malts and fruity overtones. I remember there being a big fuss about how this one was labeled (barleywine or DIPA? Age it or drink it fresh!?) - well, this one's been sitting for a while now, so I don't know how pronounced the hops originally were, but I like where they're at now. There's a nice pronounced bitterness, spicy but mellow, which melds well with the load of piney, leafy Western hop notes, with faint citrus coming in about mid-sip; there's plenty of fruity esters, both light and dark, with raisins, dates, and hints of pear, I think; and though there's a faint estery alcohol in the finish, it only becomes noticeable as things warm, and by that point this beer was near gone - pretty damn good.

Mouthfeel: Big and fluffy, and though it starts out smooth, it falls apart a little quickly. Also, seems to go a little downhill as it warms. Body is medium, carbonation is light but present, and it's pretty damn thick through 'til the finish.

Drinkability: Glad I tried this one - there've been bottles on the shelf at Green's for quite some time, though there seems to be only one left at the time of this review. I might pick it up myself, but if someone else gets to it first, I hope they enjoy it: this is a tasty beer, bold, big, well-hopped, well-hopped, and well-respected by yours truly. Poured into snifter:

Pours black with a creamy, staying, tan head. Very dark for a BW. Great head retention, especially considering the style and abv. Frothy lacing sticks.

The smell is of citrus and pine with dark fruits, grain and a hint of chocolate. A bit of booze comes through. Very different, but very nice.

The taste is of bittersweet chocolate with roasted notes (ala coffee-ish) with plenty of pine and citrus hop bitterness. A touch of warming alcohol and some vinuous notes come through late - not enough to interfere in the flavor, but to give a warmth that is appropriate for the style. English maltiness and yeast work well with the American hops - something that this brewery has done very well, in my experience.

This is pretty smooth. Even at room temperature, it doesn't quite hit as full-bodied as some other examples of the style, but it sure gets close enough.

This is a unique, different, darker Barleywine. It has a nice interaction of malts that show themselves well while allowing hops to be showcased. It's a shame to see this listed as "retired" as it is a nice treat that I certainly wouldn't mind having as an occasional "something different" treat, especially on a cool/cold evening! (1,220 characters)

A surprising look as I poured this one into a snifter. A deep dark brown color, looked thick, add to that a solid creamy head. The smell was not very strong, some chocolate hints. The first sip verified the thickness of this beer, which was in contrast to my previous barley wine experiences. It still has a barely wine taste, just a chocolate/malty strength added to it. I like it, don't get me wrong. The thickness helped balance the strong carbonization, and made it go down easy. An excellent beer to have one evening, by itself. (533 characters)

Bottled on March 27th 2008 best before 2013, batch no. 348, just got it thru private importing services bieropholie.

Pours a murky medium brown, thick head and medium carbonation that helped to keep a solid crown of foam on the beer. Solid aroma of pungent, cat piss, piney, and grassy hops. Also a hint of smoked malt. Futher smoke malt prensence in flavor with a hint of meaty smoky a bit cloying caramel maltiness.

What's unusual is a coating slick mouthfeel that envellops your mouth making you wonder if the beer is flat. Bubbles are present so I'm thinking maybe theres a unusualy large amount of cristal malts used in this beer.

I'm gonna sit on the rest of these ales to see what happens, all in all a very interresting experience. (742 characters)

Pours a syrupy dark brown with a two finger tan head.

Aroma is sweet caramel molasses roasty malty explosion of thick barleywine goodness.

Fairly sweet beer and more roasted, almost smoked flavor than what I have experienced in barleywines before. Almost a stout character with a touch of chocolate. Also, some spices I can't place, similar to cinnamon or nutmeg but more subtle and balanced than spiced beers I have had. Must be massively hopped, as a slightly citrusy and bitter hop character appears through the malts on the finish. If I had a wish list, the only thing I would put on it would be "a touch more carbonation".

This is a real eye opener and worth tracking down if you can find a bottle. I wonder how it will age? (752 characters)

Pours a coca-cola-lish brown with some dark garnet highlights. Pretty light beige head that slowly recedes with each sip. The aroma is very complex, lots of dark malty nuts with some soft plum juice, and maybe some caramel. The taste is very heavy on the dark fruis. Roasted prnes, baked cherries. A splash of roasted malts gives a grainy bread taste and texture. Very warm nd fruity palat, and actuly becomes a little winey as it warms. Great sipping beer and a great dark barely wine form the Norse. (501 characters)

I had this sitting my cellar for about six months and the last day of July seemed like a good occasion to open it. This beer had a deep dark brown body with a nice 1" tall light tan head. The smell seemed a little muted, a little chocolate, some alcohol, as it warmed up a little more biscuit smell came out but that was it. The taste started a little sweet and then a nice bitter woody hop bite, the malt was kind of like a rye beer, that may have been from the hops but I was tasting rye. It is a little on the light side for a barleywine, but still nice and thick with a good level of carbonation for a 10% ABV beer. The lightness and good carbonation made it very drinkable. (678 characters)

I got two of these puppies the second City Beer put out a scandinavian section. I opened one up not know what to expect, and i was please. The second one I ages for probably 6-7 months (it doesn't need intense aging). Norwegians, despite the fact that their still trying to find their place, know how to make a good brew. The same characteristics from the fresher version hold true to the aged version. Chocolate aroma, light sugary taste, mellow hop flavor. This beer is a good 'chillum' barley wine. It's got all the characteristics of a west coast BW, but it's not a punch in the face (like big foot). This beer wants you to relax, but enjoy the flavor full on. I hope this beer shows up more often. It's a keeper. (717 characters)

Poured a deep brown with large tan head and I mean HUGE. Biggest I have seen foir a bwine, almost so big that I had to let it settle for 5 minutes or so. Nose was nice chocolate malts, English malts and well hopped. Taste was rather light bodied for a bwine. While it was tasty it did lack the malt and hops profiles of the typical American Bwine.The ABV was more than the taste to me. Mouthfeel was good. Some age would do this well. (467 characters)

Bought recently from Tower in Atlanta.

Pours dark brown, very close to black, with a cream-colored head that dissipates into a ring. Darker than an average barleywine.

Doesn't smell like a normal barleywine, there's a lot more coffee, and you can slightly smell the alcohol.

Following the above trend the taste isn't much like a normal barleywine either. It isn't very sweet, and the coffee notes are more prevalent than anything else. There's also a slight bitterness at the end. Somehow it all works very well together.

The mouthfeel is pretty thick - the carbonation is just enough to release the flavors.

This beer is very good. I'm not sure when it was retired, but it seems as if the hops (if they were there much) have calmed down and the other flavors have stepped up to replace it. Very drinkable, definitely a sipper.

I would recommend this as a good beer, just don't expect a traditional barleywine. (916 characters)

A- pours a pretty dark copper brown when held to the light. huge head all around, tannish almost milk chocolate colored. sticky lacing is left all around. very different for such a high abv beer, but im encouraged and it looks great. also looks crystal clear through the light, which confuses me because it said on the bottle that wheath was involved. at first i thought it was wheat, but now it makes me wonder... anyway after all this pondering and reading the head is still a 1/2 cm thick.

S- very roasted porter'ish type scents. smooth very mellow, and rounded light hints of chocolate. so far its striking me as a baltic porter type (minus the sherry flavors from long aging)

T- very smooth wouldnt have guessed it to be 10 % abv. roasted character still tends to be the biggest flavor contributer. still striking me as a baltic porter type flavor wise. there actually is some really solid fruity type sweet flavors right in the middle which is probably a mixture of the strong malts, and the bit of aging before i got around to it. this might have been exactly what i was looking for today. pretty damn delicious very smooth, lingering roasted character with a light bitter finish.

M- smooth, pretty light carbonation after all that head, lingering bitterness and a solid full body.

D- awesome sipper, just like the bottle described. maybe miss filed, but who cares, shouldnt let the definitions dominate your perceptions and how you judge it. (1,453 characters)

1 pint, 9 fluid ounce brown bottle without dating. Probably not a concern considering this was a limited edition of high-strength.

Pours very dark for a barley wine. Opaque dark brown with a sheen of creamy froth and excellent lace retention. The aroma suggests a stylistic hybrid. Chocolate malts are dominant, with suggestions of vinous dark fruits and American pine-hops at the edges. The flavors are something else again. Beer is nearly flavorless at first. A woody alcohol sting develop in the center, layered over very dry powdered cocoa and spiced cookie dough. Finishes with a dry pine-bark bite and leaves warming alcohol behind. The body is rich and creamy, with lots of carbonation for the strength.

The beer seems half-baked at this age. The alcohol is too strong (solvent-like really) and the other flavors aren't fully developed. Might mellow with age. (869 characters)

Thanks to my RB buddy fishingnet for this gem.

A: Nice chestnut brown hue with a solid half finger head. The retention is nice and the lace is spotty but thick.

S: This one has a bit of age, but the aromas are still wonderful. Nice biscuity malt married to tons of fresh citrus, pine, and floral hops.

T: Dark malts are used and the roast really comes thru in the taste. Tons of citrus and piney hops yield to malty goodness. The malts are roasty and sweet. Hints of brown sugar and molasses can be noted. Really well crafted brew.

M: Full bodied and thick. Ample carbonation and well hidden ABV.

D: Nice drinking beer. Wish I had a bomber of my own. Fishing net brews, and stated he would attempt a clone of this one. I can't wait.

Overall: Wonderful drinking beer that is a tad bit lighter than your average barleywine. It's a tasty brew that is rather drinkable. (871 characters)

A reasonably vigorous pour produces a four-finger thick, darkish tinged, tan colored head in my Tripel Karmeliet tulip. The beer is a deeply concentrated, burnt amber color that just shows a deep, clear, concentrated ruby hue if held up to the light. This smells of sticky hop character even as I am pouring this beer. A closer inspection confirms this with notes of candied citrus peel, sweetened berry notes, sweet pine sap, orange blossom honey, a soft herbal reek that can lean towards garlic chive at times as well as a touch of menthol aromatics. As is typical with my experience of the new breed, hoppy northern European beers there is still a substantial malt backbone here that contributes a deep toasty grain character, and nice whole grain bread aromatics.

Hoppy from the first taste, this has a bracing bitterness that becomes more astringent and aggressive through to the lingering, bitingly hoppy finish. Lingering herbal notes, menthol, concentrated pine sap, bright bergamot, ruby-red grapefruit, tangerine, ample lychee form the biggest part of the flavor profile, but supporting hop-derived notes of light cured leather, some tobacco flavors, garlic chives and milkweed are also noticeable at a much more subtle level. The malt contributes lots of chewy, viscous body to this brew as well as some light toasted-almost-roasted touches in the finish, hop supporting caramel character, and some malty crushed cracker flavors in the middle that get drowned out by the caramelized malt sweetness by the finish. As the beer warms up in my glass it smoothes out just a bit with some of the harsher hop notes and the bitterness becoming a bit softer and a touch more integrated.

Definitely on the thick side of a double IPA, indeed more in line on this front with a Barley wine, but it certainly plays the hop card in spades as this is clearly the dominant character, even despite the interesting malt depth. This is one of those beers that really needs to warm up (even though it only started at 50°F / 10°C, it was still a bit too cool) and perhaps even breath a bit in order to lose a bit of the sharp, astringent hop edge. This really is just insanely hopped, though I find it quite enjoyable. I definitely am enjoying the depth the mares otter malt adds and even the slight roasted note from the chocolate malt is a nice addition.

Poured into a tulip a nice dark brown color, nice carbonation, awesome fuckn' head, never seen a head like this from a BW, two-finger creamy tannish head, tons of sticky lacing and islands through out the drink. The nose is big on malts, very slight dark fruits, slight toffee, with some caramel. The taste is sweet, malty, fruity/caramel. Medium body. The alcohol is hidden very well with this brew.
