P: This decadently dark amber beast glistens with ruby highlights and exhibits a healthy creamy rootbeer head. Retention is outstanding and leaves behind a thick frothy wall of lacing.

S: The nose brings roasted sweet malts, cherries, figs, pecan pound cake, and burnt caramel. Along for the parade is woody hops, leather oils and a bountiful alcohol aroma.

T/M: Full steam ahead with robust malts both roasted and sweet caramel malts. Alcohol is hidden well and not as commanding as the nose. Timid woody hops are playing co captain of this vessel. Figs are also present with a lingering licorice ambience in the back of the throat. This thick oily bodied brew brings heed to a semi dry finish with bitter sweet dark chocolate and green apples.

O: Rough and not entirely well balanced but a great tasting beer all the same. For and American barley wine I find it lacking in the hops department and would have perfected more hop bang. Although the malts overpowered the hops I enjoyed this one and would definitely drink again. Warming and great for sipping.

500 mL bottle poured into a CBS snifter, which I thought would surely contain it. It didn't.

Appearance - Overflows instantly as I pour it. Huge khaki head that screams some sort of problem. Murky body with excellent lacing, I suppose.

Smell - Sour apples and hops. Nothing very barleywine-ish. It does take a couple of sniffs to confirm that it's infected. Hefty hop notes, even over the apples.

Taste - Tangy at first, then hoppy and even a touch of caramel. I must say it doesn't taste awful, but it isn't worth the liver damage.

Mouthfeel - Still pretty thick and mouth-coating. The bitterness is out of balance because of a lack of sugar and an unpleasant twang in the flavor, but it still isn't undrinkable.

Overall - A bad bottle, I'm sure, but it's the only one of these I've ever had, so this is how I'll review it. A drainpour, but it isn't the worst infected bottle I've sipped.

Big fluffy head in the pour, hazy almost black brown body with maple brown hues. Some decent lacing.

Rich toffee nose with dates, dusty cocoa, and dark fruits, not unlike a quad. Grassy/earthy hops are there. And, so is the booze.

Roasted grain, burnt sugars, light roast coffee, citric hop, musty qualities, and a slight tinny tang. Semi-sweet with some caramel apple.

Mouthfeel is weak and watery. So thin for the style. The carbonation is also somewhat disappointing, although it looked great in the glass.

I can say that it's not terrible, but the hops don't really stand out. Terrible mouthfeel makes it suffer. I could pass this one up.

Pint sized bottle poured into a snifter.

(A)- Pours such a dark brown color, it is almost black with blood red highlights. Produced a nice cap of tan froth. Good retention and lace.

(S)- A nice resiny dry leather profile. Bits of spice and a malty backbone of toasted caramel.

(T)- Quite a nice combo of mildly toasty caramel malt, subtle dark fruits, and a leathery resin-like hop character.

(M)- A good carbonation level and balance. A seamless and well integrated beer that showcases the heavy malt, hop profile, and high ABV without it being overbearing or too rich. In fact, this is quite smooth with only a dry finish to remind you of the 10%ABV.

(D)- Quite the solid barleywine here. Nogne has really been hit or miss with me with what I have tried from them thus far, but this one is a successful one. Great on this bitter/chilly night.

Pours a brownish body with quick dying head and minor lace patches. Aroma is malt strong as I pick up yeast/bread, light chocolate, caramel, touch of roasted malts and a medicinal hoppy aroma. Light to medium-bodied, smooth, the matls are prevelant as there is a dry, yeasty, almost woody edge with chocolate malt sweetness. All balanced with crisp, citric hops that pucker the tongue and give off a dry finish (that is also complemented by a cameo from the alochol to warm you up). Easy to drink, relaxing, and a well-balanced brew that is one of the best I've had in a while.

A-Best attribute of this beer. Perfect amber color with exact cloudiness for barley wine. The right amount of carbonation. Pours a finger thick head that quickly dissipates to 1mm-2mm ring with lacing on top throughout drinking.

S-Extremely sweet up front with caramel notes, indistinguishable dark fruits. No pick up of either alcohol or hops.

T-Too sweet caramel with slight hint of dark fruit behind. Finishes shockingly bitter with too much hops on end. There is also an alcohol finish that is off putting. Every flavor on own is OK, but as whole not balanced.

M-Just above average as it needs to be creamier. It looks like it should be, but does not deliver.

O-Seeing it poured into a glass had me excited, but flavor at this time was a let down. I am going to age this beer for five years and see how it mellows.

500 ml bottle into snifter, no bottle date. Pours cloudy dark reddish brown color with a nice 2 finger dense light khaki head with great retention that reduces to a thick cap. Some incredible thick soapy lacing on the glass as well. Aromas of big herbal hops, smokiness, old pine, citrus, caramel, wood, dark fruit, chocolate, light coffee, and spiciness. I have a feeling this is an older bottle. Extremely interesting smelling, and not like fresh hops at all. Taste of big caramel, wood, herbal, molasses, chocolate, biscuit, pine, light citrus, and spicy hops. Fair amount of bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of herbal hops, caramel, chocolate, wood, molasses, and pine on the finish for a while. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a very creamy and slick mouthfeel that drinks easily for being 10%. Alcohol is well hidden with only a warming on the finish. Overall this is a very nice enjoyable barleywine. Aromas are a bit odd, but it had nice flavor and balance. I would like to pick up a younger bottle in the future.

A- Big two-fingered off-white head on a dark brown body. Awesome head retention and lacing.

S- Big whiff of earthy hops

T- Lower hop profile than the nose would indicate, still there though.

M- Medium to medium thick mouthfeel. Medium carbonation.

D/O- Solid interpretation from Nøgne Ø. Glad they brought it back and at a nice price point ($9) to boot. Would buy again, recommend for barleywine lovers.

Rich treacle on the pour, chocolate brown in the glass. Large heaving beige head dies away gradually leaving a strong lace lattice.

Heavily candied tropical and citrus aromas with moderate amounts of sweaty, oniony character. Strong brandy caramel and biscuity malt backbone. Some sharp herbal notes bring much needed relief from the richness. Pretty bracing.

Heavy maple syrup and treacle blending with pineapple, peach and resinous pine. Big, but straightforwardly enjoyable.

Syrupy, viscous and full. Carbonation is noticeable on the front palate but pretty quickly overwhelmed by the body. Bitterness is moderate, but pretty easy to miss against the richness.

Approachable despite the rich dark malt backbone. Feels like it warrants a more interesting and adventurous hop profile though.

A: Pours a dark, brownish amber with a thin, creamy white mousse.

S: Aromas of pine sap, ripe plums, brown sugar, and toffee are present on the nose. I was expecting something a bit more citrusy and astringent, but instead, this ale smells rich and mellow.

T: A fruity, tart entry leads to notes of raisins, plums, figs, dates, toffee, milk chocolate, heavy cream, brown sugar, mint, and pine. There is a slightly bitter, fruity backtaste as well, though no particularly citrusy flavors stand out. The finish is flavorful and rich with notes of toffee, brown sugar, chocolate, and dark fruits.

M: Full bodied, but drier than expected, especially when compared to most American barleywines. Carbonation is expressive, but crisp. Alcohol presence is very subdued.

O: This is an excellent barleywine that capably straddles the fence separating the English and American variants of the style, though it is somewhat closer to the latter than to the former. If you've never had an American-style barleywine, but are familiar with the English style, then I can see this as being a good transition. Complex and very rewarding.

Poured in a 22 oz. sinfter.

A - Very dark chestnut brown with 1.5 fingers of khaki head that have excellent retention due to the ABV. Sheets of lacing are left behind.

S - Toffee, cocoa powder, nutty, then as it warms sweet citrus oil, green pine needles. Berry fruit really comes out full force with some perfumy orange blossom. Slabs of caramel mix with alcohol vapors and fill the glass with a robust sweetness.

T - Starts with a mix of semi/sweet chocolate, sweet toffee malt, then an undertow of hops rush in with mint and citrus. The hops almost take over creating an herbal spice that turns resiny and woody while still laced in citrus. Dark berry fruit, leather, and cocoa really comes out and melds with the malt

M - Medium creamy and lush body. Solid carbonation.

Very complex beer with plenty of transforming flavors during a session. The aroma is so good it's hard to explain. The cocoa stays in it's place and adds alot of complexity. Hops shine but don't overtake it. Very interesting and flavorful beer.

Deep mahogany purple sort of like a dark dark Belgian. Thin lightly tanned head. Can't get over that color. Spectacular. Slight haze but just fascinating.

Barley wine? Really? Seriously hoppy citrus with a big dose of alcohol sweetness. No doubting this beer is robust with the aroma acting as a warning signal to the taste buds.

The bitter smack in the mouth smooths over slightly as it warms. At first it hits like a good DIPA. The malt staying in the background while the hops take you for a bitter and twisted ride. Once warmed the bitterness is joined by a lightly toasted and caramel malt sweetness. Fantastic, two beers in one. The lasting bitterness continues to pay homage to the glory of the hop. Yes, if Ruination was a barley wine, this would be it.

Mouth feel remains a little sharp even once warmed but the weight is spot on.

Drinkability? Off the scale. I honestly don't care about the minor mouthfeel issue. The IPA bent in the aroma? Fine by me. This beer has what a barley wine should be. Huge character on both malt and hop fronts. Best beer I've had in while. Thank you Nogne O.

Poured from a 16.9 ounce bottle into a pilsner glass. From notes. Reviewed 15 November 2011.

A: Dark ruby-red-brown. Damn pretty. Three fingers of head with unbudging retention. Some tiny bubbles.

S: Good. Loads of hops. Sticky fruit and sweet citrus (specifically, orange). Divine, but somehow limited...The slightest touch of skunk?

T/M: Phenomenal! The ultimately balanced beer. Very sweet; astringently bitter. Carbonation is present and successfully prevents any odious heaviness. The hops may have the upper hand, but it's a close call. Some molasses on the aftertaste. Noticeably strong.

O: A superlative barleywine; highly recommended. Still, at $9 it's expensive and not everyday fare. Still, I'd have another one.

Fruity nose classic IPA (not the barleywine as is sometimes said). Dark bronze color. We can see especially the mango into the nostrils.

At the entrance in the mouth, the taste is special, especially for a beer of this style, it looks a little alcohol fishing just before and before all, grate the mouth. Soon, we find the fruity hops (slightly outdated) and bitterness, in great power, comes tickle the taste buds.

However, for many IBU beer, it's still quite low and almost entirely a commercial low-level process that make reference to sell beer. Aside from that, the drink is good.

#100 pours a dark brown w/ a nice one finger chocolate head. This is one dark barleywine... must be the chocolate malt. Slightly above average lacing on my snifter. The nose is really nice. Columbus, Chinook, and Centennial hops here- and the really the majority of what I get. Ok- there's a hint of the chocolate malt on the taste. Caramel, grapefruit and raisin in there too. Also, a hop bomb just went off in my mouth- but in a good way. Big malt backbone, but the hops have literally destroyed my taste buds within 3 tastes. This is borderline 4.5, but not quite. Feel is medium full, with a hop bitter aftertaste. Dry finish as well. Probably the best aspect of this brew. Overall, this is a nice barleywine- I'd buy it again. Cheers.

Deep mahogany beer with high head and average lacing.

Big malty sweet smell. Rich with caramel and toffee. Grapes? Some kind of more bitter dark fruit.

Taste is nicely complex. Huge malt sweetness like I expected then all these other nice flavors. Raisins/currants, some coffee, and some strong English tea. Hints of stout come and go but don't last long. The sweetness dominates and the rest is just a series of interesting accents.

Absolutely great.

Heard about this beer on the brewing network! So snagged it when I saw it at Brewery Creek and Vancouver.

A - Pours a dark brown with ruby highlights, and a ton of beige head. Great retention.
S - Smells great too, lots of dark roast, chocolate, cofee and charcoal. Also malty and sweet with a citrus hop. Great complex nose, last time I had a nose this good was with the Orval Trappist.
T - Superb for such a strong ale. Malty and sweet caramel. Nutty and biscuit notes, with coffee and chocolate, and citrus hops.
M - Full bodied for sure, but still nice and smooth. Nice balance with the bitterness as well. Surprisingly easy to drink despite the 10% price tag.
O - A fantastic beer.

Snagged a bottle at Belmont Station in Portland Oregon during a recent road trip. Glad I did.
Poured into a snifter. Dark charcoal black with a hint of brown around the side and a nice adequate brown foam head that dissipates quickly. Interesting lace. Not the big layers a splotches but abundantly spotted. Little dots all around the glass.
Rich chocolate and coffee notes throughout. Aroma and taste. Lingering aftertaste leaves a very pleasant mouthfeel to savor.
Will definitely buy this again when I get the chance.

On-tap at the Sail & Anchor in Fremantle, WA.

Pours dark. Very dark, in fact. This is certainly one of the darkest barleywines I've ever had. Head is fine and soft, a pale light cream colour. Lace forms in solid sheets down the edge of the glass. Body is heavy. Looks pretty good.

Spicy nose, a little exotic and alluring, with a lemony sweetness like a sherbet lemon candy. Underneath it are some sweet dark tones and a hint of ash. An interesting nose.

Taste is great. Dark but smooth, and with a lively hoppiness. Citric, but sweet, and always caressed by the deep and full body. On the back some dark roasted bitterness comes through which is a lovely complement to the other flavours. Feel is quite light, but undercarbonated, which keeps it smooth.

Lovely drop. It's deep and heavy, but really surprisingly drinkable.

A - Extremely dark body. Not black, but a deep, rich mahogany. No light comes through. head is very dense and doesn't seem to want to go anywhere.

S - So much going on in the nose. Sweetness comes through right away, rich decadent aromas of dark fruit and sweet fudge. Hints of lemon zest linger in the background.

T - A lot like the nose. Fudge is what comes to mind right off the bat with rasins and earth tones complementing the subtlety of the resinous hops. Alcohol definitely leaves a warmth on the finish.

M - exquisitely smooth with light carbonation allowing the flavors to access the palate without any obstructions.

O - A great barleywine that I would love savor again.

Despite what's written on RB (that the brewery claims this is a DIPA) it clearly isn't based on the colour alone. It's got the black-brown of an old ale and when you get to the nose it's even more apparent just how much rich, thick malt is in there.

The pour is fantastic. Truly insane amounts of lacing coming off this thing. Good head too.

The aroma has malt in the form of rye and carob, and some yummy tangerine/orange hops. Like Cointreau with chocolate. Yer, the "Cointreau" part means there's some alcohol too. This is a classy nose. Later on the nose becomes even more inviting, increasing in hop complexity with a sourdough yeast backing.

Similar stuff in the taste with the alcohol unfortunately being slightly more present. I mean it's still easy to deal with, and the kisses of residual sugar help to balance it out. The citrusy hop juice/malt/alcohol/sweetness/bitterness is pretty well balanced here for a 10%er, with a rather receding bitterness. While it's not a DIPA, it is inarguably a hoppy barleywine.

Mouthfeel varies. It can be thin; at its best it's thick and loaded with hop resins- truly amazing.

Overall this beer is excellent. Highly recommended. Pretty classic American-style barleywine.

I had a 25 oz. bottle.

A- Kind of a muddy, silty color. Nothing spectacular. I tried to pour this correctly, but both pours resulted in a huge amount of head.

S - Smells a bit woody. I'm a scotch guy, so this a good thing for me. Also get yeast.

T - Very mellow and very smooth. Quite good. Second in barleywines I've had only to Dogfish's Olde School.

M - Very drinkable. Hides the 10% ABV very well.

O - This is a very good barley wine. I would drink it again in a heartbeat.

Review from notes - Norway 2011

Three fingers of forthy and thick light tan head fills the top of the glass, sporting a fantastic level of retention for a 10% ABV beer. The body looks big, being an incredibly hazy caramel amber hue. Spongey sheets of lace stick firmly to the glass as the head slowly dissipates.

Heavy on the toasted malts and caramel in the nose. Very bready. The hops come in a sweet and syrupy grapefruit form with spritzy lemon notes behind. A date sweetness makes me think of how viscous the body is. The high ABV is well hidden in this big and syrupy barleywine. There's nothing mindblowing about the nose, but it's still an all around good smelling beer.

Hoppy upfront but not overwhelmingly bitter. The hops come in a more earthy and grassy flavour. The lemony zing is still there and present from start to finish. The malts impart a thick heftiness to the body. I liken their sweetness to caramel drizzled rye bread. The alcohol comes unobtrusively in the finish.

The body is smooth and syrupy with a good level of tingly carbonation. The alcohol is present but its only real indicator is in the heftiness it gives to the body.

A well rounded and tastey American Barleywine. With that being said, nothing stands out to make it outstanding. This is my first Nogne beer and I liked where I started. I'll be taking full advantage of my easy access to their other offerings.

Enjoyed this 22oz bomber out of a large snifter glass.

A: Mahogany colored ale with amber highlights with a thin one-finger white head that quickly dissipates into a thin wispy lace.

S: Burnt caramel and malt aromas fill the nose. You can smell the alcohol in this one.

T: General sweetness and caramel barleywine flavors. Very smooth and alcoholic

M: Very strong and boozy. Medium body and carbonation

O: Decent barleywine and enough alcohol to make it interesting.

.5L bottle. Batch 446. Brewed 19.08.09. Best before 19.08.14. Found this one at the Vinmonopolet at the Kvadrat in Sandnes. Poured into a wine goblet. Pours a ruby/chocolate brown with a slightly off-white head of a couple fingers. Head has good retention and sticks well to the sides of the glass. Lacing is quite substantial.

Smell is of sweet malts, brown sugar, molasses, and birch syrup. I'm also getting some booze aromas emanating from the glass. Slight hint of caramel on the nose as well.

Wow, the alcohol strength of this one just clocked me out of the gate. This one lets you know it registers at 10%! Aside from that, I'm getting a good amount of sweetness--molasses, brown sugar and syrup. Definitely has a syrup-sweetness quality to it. Sweetness really lingers at the end. I'm also tasting some chocolate or caramel at the finish, mixed in with a little nuttiness--walnuts or roasted chestnuts perhaps.

Mouthfeel is slick and sweet (syrupy). Overall good carbonation for the style. This barleywine is a great sipper. Rich and sweet with some roasted chestnut flavors, this would make a great complement to many types of after-dinner treats.
