Deep chestnut red body smother with a very thick, very chunky off-white, sticky head. Dates and prunes along with molasses, almost smokey grains, caramel and toffee in the aroma. Surprisingly mild taste overall (perhaps due to the relative age of this bottle); soft depths of sweetness bolstered with a nicely balanced bitterness and alcohol warmth. Heavy mouthfeel, vinous, smooth.

A big beer with a deceivingly mild character. I was expecting to be hammered with malt sweetness and a strong, boozy taste, but this one came across quite easy drinking compared to many other offerings from the northern Europe regions. Perhaps this all came from letting the bottle sit for most of the year in a relatively temperate environment, but no matter what, this is one fine and approachable big beer.

Bottle dated July 12, 2012.

Beer is dark brown with some reddish hints. Moderately-sized beige head. OK retention, decent lace.

Smell is a real mixture of sweet malt and bitter, citrusy hops. Burnt caramel, brown sugar, a bit of wood, orange, a bit of apple.

Nice flavour. Similar to the nose, a real mix of malt and hops. Caramel, brown sugar, a bit bready, a touch of dark fruit. As for hops, orange sticks out. I don't pick out a lot more citrus fruit, but there is a notable bitterness from the hops, particularly at the finish. Really a good balance between the two sides. Good.

Full bodied, moderately carbonated. Fairly heavy, bready with a bit of a sticky syrupy flavour.

Overall, a good barleywine. Very enjoyable.

This deep pecan-coloured brew doesn't afford much glitz or glamour but does reveal perfect clarity when held into the light. It also offers an impressive amount of head for a beer that's alcohol content hits double-digits. That off-white lather refuses to diminish even as the liquid beneath it does; much of it finds its way to the sides of the glass.

Its hops are almost villain-like they make so bitter the otherwise sweet, butter/raisin/pecan tart-like bouquet. Earthy, herbal resins seethe from the aroma like sap from a tree (an appropriate simile considering the scent of pine needles and spruce bark). A great, billowing note of purple plum conjures a thought of summer ripeness in an aroma that largely smells of fall-time decay.

The flavour is laced with sweet notes of fig, date, dark honey and molasses and is accented by a leafy peppermint and ginger spice. Lesser notes of grapefruit rind and caramel are noted too. It offers a great tension between the dark, sticky-sweet flavours and brighter, more citrusy ones. That said, the beer leans heavily on the leafy, resiny (i.e., pine, grass, peppermint) qualities. Good composure.

Reportedly, this beer's creators had conceived this recipe for a DIPA, but it was accidentally labeled a barleywine. Whatever. Barleywine. Double IPA. Tomato. Tomatoe. Let's not call the whole thing off. This disappears far too quick for a beer of its strength, a testimony to the fact that it's irresistibly quaffable. Despite some apparent strength, the beer is chewy enough to be a cookie. This is not by necessity a slow drinker.

Criminal law penalizes conspiracy as a separate crime because it acknowledges that the whole can be bigger than the sum of its parts; multiple actors achieve greater results working in concert than when they each act alone. Indeed, that is the case with Nogne #100, where sugary, nectar-sweet malts collude with herbal, piny hops to scheme a beer as satiating as it is quenching. Teamwork at its finest.

a good barleywine, but hardly worth the hype i dont think. its nothing special. pours a redish whiskey color, with a moderate but quicly fleeting off white head. the nose is alcohol, old wood, dried red fruit, and caramel malts in excess. flavor is mostly similar to the nose. lots of sweetness up front, but it doesnt last, thankfully. that molasses spice stays around, but the sugar goes to alcohol before too long. also a surprising level of hops in the finish of this, which makes it more american to me than anything. average mouthfeel, light carbonation, lesser body than most, long finish, boozed up. i like it, but it doesnt stand out as wonderful or unique to me.

# 100 opens to a sweet, spicy, citrusy, complex aroma that instantly speaks to a well-crafted beer. There are lovely light sugars in here, including strawberry, berry, orange, and apricot fruit esters on the light side, and prune, fig, raisin, black cherry, and date on the dark, as well as touches of candi sugar and almost Stevia-like sweetness about the fringes. These are countered by lemon and lemongrass, as well as sweet pink grapefruit and touches of grapefruit rind and pine from the hops, and a nice toast crust, biscuit, and Grape Nuts cereal layer from the grains. The aromas do drift more toward the sweet and effervescent, recalling fruit spritzers, but enough of a cognac touch of vanilla and caramel remains to add a layer of light alcohol vapors. As a whole, the nose is very nice, though somewhat lighter than could be expected from a 10% ABV Barleywine, but does feature an excellent range of fruits and sugars, tempered well by vanilla, citrusy hops, and breads.

On the tongue, the beer opens with a marked sweetness that is almost instantly joined by a strange heavy raisin fruit ester base, almost as if raisin puree had been added pre-fermentation. The raisin overtone does carry touches of date, fig, and prune, but is largely raisin-y, and joined by peppery, spicy edges that make this seem more alcoholic fruitcake than beer. Largely gone here are the light fruit esters from the nose, the orange coming across on the tongue more like blood orange liqueur. Thick swaths of brown bread and toast crust add earthiness, and there’s a good layer of lemon, lemongrass, grapefruit, and light pine resin from the hops. But the major flavor here is the raisin/dark fruit layer, which combines with the vanillas, caramels, and alcohol burn to make this seem like raisin liqueur mixed with brandy or cognac. These flavors dominate the aftertaste as well, which lingers on the tongue for a good while. Mouthfeel is medium, and carbonation is medium.

Overall, this is one of the stranger Barleywines on the market, and the overabundance of raisin and dark fruit esters is initially shocking, and can be slightly wearing over time, like trying to eat an entire loaf of spiced fruitcake in one sitting. The beer is definitely worth trying for the experience, but be aware that this is very much a sipping beer, and the strong flavors and heavy alcohol burn might prove too much for some.

Poured from a 16.9oz bottle into a US tumbler pint glass.

A: The beer is a dark brown color, with a large off-white head that fades slowly and leaves a thick lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains roasted malts, chocolate, some fruit, a good amount of hops and some alcohol.

T: The taste starts out with a hearty malt character that is quickly followed by sweet flavors of chocolate and fruit. Then a strong but not over-powering hops presence comes in to provide a good balance. The after-taste is slightly sweet.

M: Crisp and smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is dry but slightly sticky.

O: Tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, strong kick, good representation of style, this is a solid barleywine worth drinking for a while.

BB 2016

Pours a massive coarse swirling two-three finger head cream head, over a deep rich dark brown body. Lovely.

Deep dark aormas. Christmas cake, figs, rasins. Oh, and an earthy hop brooding presence.

Taste is an alcolholic assault, big beer, big earthy hops. Not quite enough malt backbone to carry. Dry overall. As it warms, more raisin/sherry flavours come out.

Mouthfeel OK, moderate carbonation, heavyweight body.

Overall, a bit too dry, takes away drinakbility. One of the slowest drinks I have had in a long time... says a lot!!!

On tap at Hop Cat in Grand Rapids, MI. The first line of my notes reads as follows:

"Gas hops grass burn GOOD."

Pours absolutely gorgeous for a barleywine. Very dark brown, so hazy that it was nearly opaque, with a perfect rocky head.

Smells intensely malty with nodes of chocolate, moonshine, pipe tobacco, burnt barley, and green hops. Tastes the same, only all is wonderfully overwritten by a firmly alcoholic burn.

This one was pretty goddamn intense, but in very good way. My traveling companion couldn't swallow a single sip, but I finished it with troubling alacrity, considering its strength.

A great barleywine - more in line with the English style than American. Big malt, of course, loads of caramelized sugar, dried fruits, and shortbread. Bitterness stands its ground against the malt blitz. Hops are earthy, spicy, and freshly bitter. A hint of fruit from the yeast softens the thick flavors. Nice dryness keeps it super-drinkable. Yeah, this would do the trick in a cold Scandinavian winter, but it's equally good at standing up to a thick ribeye steak.

22 to tulip. Served cool. No date.

A - Amber so dark it's opaque except around the edges, though red when light is shined through. Insane head, huge and doesn't want to dissipate enough to let me drink. There's still a half inch of it left in the bottom of the glass when the beer is gone. Chunky big lacing.

S - A mild nose of malt and faint yeast and maybe a hint of apple

T - Initially there is something at the nexus of mildly tart and mildly bitter, but which recedes. Sweet caramel. A light floral/clover character, especially on the exhale. Maybe that's some kind of hop character but I get no bitterness. The booze is just barely on the warm side. Otherwise this comes across really soft and pretty where I was expecting harshness.

M - Soft, thick and smooth

O - While I wouldn't call it complex, I would say it has gravitas and is satisfying. Reminds me a little of an English strong ale. I would be happy if you gave me one of these but I will probably not buy another as I look for the really interesting stuff out there.

Picked this up while on vacation in Oslo. Murky brown pour with hints of mahogany when held to the light. Nice creamy one finger head with super retention and crazy lacing. Huge complex nose that starts off all hops, but opens up with tons of sweet malts and citrus. The taste really stands out in the Barleywine category. I'm not typically a big fan, but this one has awesome balance. Very complex with hints of rye, tangerines, caramel, hop resin, pine, brown sugar, and dark fruit. It's big and bold, but not overdone like most Barleywines. The mouthfeel is thick and syrupy, but creamy at the same time. This is probably the best Barleywine I've ever had. Going to continue to check out this great brewery!

P: This decadently dark amber beast glistens with ruby highlights and exhibits a healthy creamy rootbeer head. Retention is outstanding and leaves behind a thick frothy wall of lacing.

S: The nose brings roasted sweet malts, cherries, figs, pecan pound cake, and burnt caramel. Along for the parade is woody hops, leather oils and a bountiful alcohol aroma.

T/M: Full steam ahead with robust malts both roasted and sweet caramel malts. Alcohol is hidden well and not as commanding as the nose. Timid woody hops are playing co captain of this vessel. Figs are also present with a lingering licorice ambience in the back of the throat. This thick oily bodied brew brings heed to a semi dry finish with bitter sweet dark chocolate and green apples.

O: Rough and not entirely well balanced but a great tasting beer all the same. For and American barley wine I find it lacking in the hops department and would have perfected more hop bang. Although the malts overpowered the hops I enjoyed this one and would definitely drink again. Warming and great for sipping.

500 mL bottle poured into a CBS snifter, which I thought would surely contain it. It didn't.

Appearance - Overflows instantly as I pour it. Huge khaki head that screams some sort of problem. Murky body with excellent lacing, I suppose.

Smell - Sour apples and hops. Nothing very barleywine-ish. It does take a couple of sniffs to confirm that it's infected. Hefty hop notes, even over the apples.

Taste - Tangy at first, then hoppy and even a touch of caramel. I must say it doesn't taste awful, but it isn't worth the liver damage.

Mouthfeel - Still pretty thick and mouth-coating. The bitterness is out of balance because of a lack of sugar and an unpleasant twang in the flavor, but it still isn't undrinkable.

Overall - A bad bottle, I'm sure, but it's the only one of these I've ever had, so this is how I'll review it. A drainpour, but it isn't the worst infected bottle I've sipped.

Big fluffy head in the pour, hazy almost black brown body with maple brown hues. Some decent lacing.

Rich toffee nose with dates, dusty cocoa, and dark fruits, not unlike a quad. Grassy/earthy hops are there. And, so is the booze.

Roasted grain, burnt sugars, light roast coffee, citric hop, musty qualities, and a slight tinny tang. Semi-sweet with some caramel apple.

Mouthfeel is weak and watery. So thin for the style. The carbonation is also somewhat disappointing, although it looked great in the glass.

I can say that it's not terrible, but the hops don't really stand out. Terrible mouthfeel makes it suffer. I could pass this one up.

Pint sized bottle poured into a snifter.

(A)- Pours such a dark brown color, it is almost black with blood red highlights. Produced a nice cap of tan froth. Good retention and lace.

(S)- A nice resiny dry leather profile. Bits of spice and a malty backbone of toasted caramel.

(T)- Quite a nice combo of mildly toasty caramel malt, subtle dark fruits, and a leathery resin-like hop character.

(M)- A good carbonation level and balance. A seamless and well integrated beer that showcases the heavy malt, hop profile, and high ABV without it being overbearing or too rich. In fact, this is quite smooth with only a dry finish to remind you of the 10%ABV.

(D)- Quite the solid barleywine here. Nogne has really been hit or miss with me with what I have tried from them thus far, but this one is a successful one. Great on this bitter/chilly night.

Pours a brownish body with quick dying head and minor lace patches. Aroma is malt strong as I pick up yeast/bread, light chocolate, caramel, touch of roasted malts and a medicinal hoppy aroma. Light to medium-bodied, smooth, the matls are prevelant as there is a dry, yeasty, almost woody edge with chocolate malt sweetness. All balanced with crisp, citric hops that pucker the tongue and give off a dry finish (that is also complemented by a cameo from the alochol to warm you up). Easy to drink, relaxing, and a well-balanced brew that is one of the best I've had in a while.

A-Best attribute of this beer. Perfect amber color with exact cloudiness for barley wine. The right amount of carbonation. Pours a finger thick head that quickly dissipates to 1mm-2mm ring with lacing on top throughout drinking.

S-Extremely sweet up front with caramel notes, indistinguishable dark fruits. No pick up of either alcohol or hops.

T-Too sweet caramel with slight hint of dark fruit behind. Finishes shockingly bitter with too much hops on end. There is also an alcohol finish that is off putting. Every flavor on own is OK, but as whole not balanced.

M-Just above average as it needs to be creamier. It looks like it should be, but does not deliver.

O-Seeing it poured into a glass had me excited, but flavor at this time was a let down. I am going to age this beer for five years and see how it mellows.

500 ml bottle into snifter, no bottle date. Pours cloudy dark reddish brown color with a nice 2 finger dense light khaki head with great retention that reduces to a thick cap. Some incredible thick soapy lacing on the glass as well. Aromas of big herbal hops, smokiness, old pine, citrus, caramel, wood, dark fruit, chocolate, light coffee, and spiciness. I have a feeling this is an older bottle. Extremely interesting smelling, and not like fresh hops at all. Taste of big caramel, wood, herbal, molasses, chocolate, biscuit, pine, light citrus, and spicy hops. Fair amount of bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of herbal hops, caramel, chocolate, wood, molasses, and pine on the finish for a while. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a very creamy and slick mouthfeel that drinks easily for being 10%. Alcohol is well hidden with only a warming on the finish. Overall this is a very nice enjoyable barleywine. Aromas are a bit odd, but it had nice flavor and balance. I would like to pick up a younger bottle in the future.

A- Big two-fingered off-white head on a dark brown body. Awesome head retention and lacing.

S- Big whiff of earthy hops

T- Lower hop profile than the nose would indicate, still there though.

M- Medium to medium thick mouthfeel. Medium carbonation.

D/O- Solid interpretation from Nøgne Ø. Glad they brought it back and at a nice price point ($9) to boot. Would buy again, recommend for barleywine lovers.

Rich treacle on the pour, chocolate brown in the glass. Large heaving beige head dies away gradually leaving a strong lace lattice.

Heavily candied tropical and citrus aromas with moderate amounts of sweaty, oniony character. Strong brandy caramel and biscuity malt backbone. Some sharp herbal notes bring much needed relief from the richness. Pretty bracing.

Heavy maple syrup and treacle blending with pineapple, peach and resinous pine. Big, but straightforwardly enjoyable.

Syrupy, viscous and full. Carbonation is noticeable on the front palate but pretty quickly overwhelmed by the body. Bitterness is moderate, but pretty easy to miss against the richness.

Approachable despite the rich dark malt backbone. Feels like it warrants a more interesting and adventurous hop profile though.

A: Pours a dark, brownish amber with a thin, creamy white mousse.

S: Aromas of pine sap, ripe plums, brown sugar, and toffee are present on the nose. I was expecting something a bit more citrusy and astringent, but instead, this ale smells rich and mellow.

T: A fruity, tart entry leads to notes of raisins, plums, figs, dates, toffee, milk chocolate, heavy cream, brown sugar, mint, and pine. There is a slightly bitter, fruity backtaste as well, though no particularly citrusy flavors stand out. The finish is flavorful and rich with notes of toffee, brown sugar, chocolate, and dark fruits.

M: Full bodied, but drier than expected, especially when compared to most American barleywines. Carbonation is expressive, but crisp. Alcohol presence is very subdued.

O: This is an excellent barleywine that capably straddles the fence separating the English and American variants of the style, though it is somewhat closer to the latter than to the former. If you've never had an American-style barleywine, but are familiar with the English style, then I can see this as being a good transition. Complex and very rewarding.

Poured in a 22 oz. sinfter.

A - Very dark chestnut brown with 1.5 fingers of khaki head that have excellent retention due to the ABV. Sheets of lacing are left behind.

S - Toffee, cocoa powder, nutty, then as it warms sweet citrus oil, green pine needles. Berry fruit really comes out full force with some perfumy orange blossom. Slabs of caramel mix with alcohol vapors and fill the glass with a robust sweetness.

T - Starts with a mix of semi/sweet chocolate, sweet toffee malt, then an undertow of hops rush in with mint and citrus. The hops almost take over creating an herbal spice that turns resiny and woody while still laced in citrus. Dark berry fruit, leather, and cocoa really comes out and melds with the malt

M - Medium creamy and lush body. Solid carbonation.

Very complex beer with plenty of transforming flavors during a session. The aroma is so good it's hard to explain. The cocoa stays in it's place and adds alot of complexity. Hops shine but don't overtake it. Very interesting and flavorful beer.

Deep mahogany purple sort of like a dark dark Belgian. Thin lightly tanned head. Can't get over that color. Spectacular. Slight haze but just fascinating.

Barley wine? Really? Seriously hoppy citrus with a big dose of alcohol sweetness. No doubting this beer is robust with the aroma acting as a warning signal to the taste buds.

The bitter smack in the mouth smooths over slightly as it warms. At first it hits like a good DIPA. The malt staying in the background while the hops take you for a bitter and twisted ride. Once warmed the bitterness is joined by a lightly toasted and caramel malt sweetness. Fantastic, two beers in one. The lasting bitterness continues to pay homage to the glory of the hop. Yes, if Ruination was a barley wine, this would be it.

Mouth feel remains a little sharp even once warmed but the weight is spot on.

Drinkability? Off the scale. I honestly don't care about the minor mouthfeel issue. The IPA bent in the aroma? Fine by me. This beer has what a barley wine should be. Huge character on both malt and hop fronts. Best beer I've had in while. Thank you Nogne O.

A: Dark ruby-red-brown. Damn pretty. Three fingers of head with unbudging retention. Some tiny bubbles.

S: Good. Loads of hops. Sticky fruit and sweet citrus (specifically, orange). Divine, but somehow limited...The slightest touch of skunk?

T/M: Phenomenal! The ultimately balanced beer. Very sweet; astringently bitter. Carbonation is present and successfully prevents any odious heaviness. The hops may have the upper hand, but it's a close call. Some molasses on the aftertaste. Noticeably strong.

O: A superlative barleywine; highly recommended. Still, at $9 it's expensive and not everyday fare. Still, I'd have another one.

Fruity nose classic IPA (not the barleywine as is sometimes said). Dark bronze color. We can see especially the mango into the nostrils.

At the entrance in the mouth, the taste is special, especially for a beer of this style, it looks a little alcohol fishing just before and before all, grate the mouth. Soon, we find the fruity hops (slightly outdated) and bitterness, in great power, comes tickle the taste buds.

However, for many IBU beer, it's still quite low and almost entirely a commercial low-level process that make reference to sell beer. Aside from that, the drink is good.
