Poured from bottle into a Rastal snifter. Poured a dark brown color with huge thick tan foamy head. Smell was toffee, sweet bread, with slight dark fruit aromas that are followed by a even fainter alcohol present. Taste is roasted malt dry flavor, mixed with bitter citrus rind and slight bitter pine flavor, finished with a raisin spice flavor. The dryness on the finish and the well concealed alcohol make this a very drinkable barleywine.

Pours a very dark brown that only shows light when it is the thinnest part of a glass. Big light tan head. Nose is slight hops with a big hit of alcohol. Flavor is strong. Seems fairly dominated by alcohol. There is a definite hop presence there, but I feel like it would help this beer a lot to just lay down for a few years and mature. Feel is well bodied on the liquid and the carbonation is good as well. Overall this is a nice brew. But like I said, it could probably use several more years on it's side.

Pours deep amber, almost black with a light tan head. In the aroma, hoppy and somewhat plummish. In the taste, plum, caramel and just a nice hop presence backing it up. A smooth, malty mouthfeel and a dry small hop and small plum in the aftertaste. Somewhere between an IPA and a barleywine. Color threw me off, but otherwise really great.

Deep, dark, thick brown pour with lots of activity carrying up the tan top to a tall inch of puffy fresh foam that fades at a fairly faster then expected pace. But thats OK as it leaves large stretchy patches of lace and a big skim of tan residue always present. The color sits a nearly coffee black and deceptively opaque. A great looking barleywine, albiet not the typical tawny brown color one would normally associate a BW, but this is Nogne and they seem to have a tendency to push it a bit and create the effect of a stout instead.

Aroma is fairly roasty with that certain malty roundedness in some toffee, caramel, and a bit of raisin. Hops are deeply noted on larger wiffs with a dark piney influence mixed with a newly charred hop field of burnt hop cone edges. Good amount of alcoholic breath seeps its way thru as its cinders in the glass.

Flavors are all twisted up in a fine amount of hoppy pineyness and dark orange pith, tang, and peel. Malts balance it out with some nice roastyness, chocolate hints, toffee, caramel, snappy fresh barley grain with a toasted quickness that never retreats from the palate as the hops take the tongue and scrap across any open areas left with pine and orange biten bitterness. Semi brittle dry finish with a nice hop load balancing off with a bit of residual warmth. Notes of raisin skins and vanilla flow in and out in the middle. Ends nice and hoppy with a dryness reminiscent of toasted orange peels...as if there were such a thing.

Feel is smooth and big with a nicely handled approach to the hops as its bitterness is suited just right with enough zip and lasting impression as the malt keep it all together maintaining one fine tuned addition of toasted roast and caramel goodness.

Nearly gone in no time flat. Way too drinkable for 10%. Much like other great Barleywines, this stuff hits ya late and the next thing you know you can't remember where you put your glass as you try to find your slippers so you can go to bed. Nogne has another yummy winner with this one!

Deep, deep brown color with a huge fluffy, cocoa head on top. Somewhat metallic and sharp aroma-vinuous. Deep, malty flavor. Nice blend of a caramel/raisin taste. Strong hop bitterness-they really stand out against the heavy malt. Decent enough mouthfeel-has a dry edge to it in the finish. Good barleywine. Not up to par with their RIS and porter but still a solid brew.

Pours a dark brown but sits in the glass as a imperal stout. Has thick pancake-like batter qualities. Lacing is thick and phenomonal, as it coats the whole glass and sticks around...exceptional.

Smells are so so complex. ..Another "5"
Up front are Sweet toasty malts, peppery spices, and some hops. Choclolaty as well.
As I swirl the mysterious brew, I get waifs of roses and herbs. A very bready smell and some wood charachterics...oak.
Where is the alcohol 10% abv?

In the taste department, I would compare this brew mostly to Stone Russian Imperial Stout. But not as thick in the mouthfeel as Stone. This tastes incredible.
Has a nice hop profile. Almost ruins the tounge like a IPA. Very very sweet malts that are sooo roasty and toasty. As the hop bitterness are almost borderline OUT TO SPACE, so is the malt sweetness. This beer is HUGE HUGE HUGE. With the sips, alcohol is present like a barlywine. What is this beer? I would label it a Imperial stout. But without the coffie and expresso many have.

The mouthfeel is thick and the sugars coat everything. I am surprised my teeth are not coated black. I wish this was a bit more creamy and smooth. Still is creamy and smooth but could be a little more. I think the Hops take away the mouthfeel and drinkability one half notch.

This is a HUGE beer. Incredible profiles!!! People always talk of Dark Lord and Westies....I think this is up there in that class.
A bit expensive...but we only live once!

Very nice fruity aroma. Lots of fermentation esters like really ripe dark pit fruits. Good malt aromas too of dark caramel and some chocolate.

Deep brown almost black but with ruby highlights when held up to the light. Pours with a 1/2 inch thick and solid dark tan head. The head fades to a nice persistent layer that just covers the surface and leaves good lacing.

Very estery and fruity fermentation flavors right off. Good hop bitterness level that cuts through most of the strong base malt sweetness. There's quite a lot of roast malt flavor too. There's more roast here than I'm expecting in a barleywine but way less than a big stout so it seems to fall somewhere in between. There's a lingering light citrus hop flavor in the aftertaste. But the flavor that keeps coming back as it warms and I get more through a glass is the fruity ale esters.

Big bodied with a nice creamy carbonation. There's a little alcohol warmth too.

Nice big ale but it feels to to owe more lineage with Baltic porters than American Barleywine. Get some!

A-2” dense tan head on a pretty much black body.
S- Big citrus and pine hops, light burnt malt in the back, sweet dark fruits and figs, toffee, and one other sweeter thing I just can’t put my finger on.
T- Big roasted malt character. Sweet toffee, pine hops, light citrus hops, dark fruits like plums, hints of nuts, just a touch of spice (maybe from a type of hop), and a little tickle from alcohol on the tongue. In the aftertaste it’s left with sweet caramel malt, some cherries, a pine hop dryness, and a decent size bitterness on the mid tongue.
M- Full chewy body with low carbonation.
D- It is pretty good. The first few sips are kind of questionable but after a few it does come around on you. Not really what I was expecting but it is a really good barleywine and might try to get a couple more.

Appearance: black in color with a 1" dark tan colored head that lasts quite a while for a barleywine.

Smell: big roasted malt tones, with some softer chocolate and alcohol tones.

Taste: roasted malts, licorice, milder bitter chocolate, caramel, plums, and a soft earthy tone rounds it out. Alcohol is noticeable and the hop bitterness balances ou tthe malt sweetness.

Mouthfeel: crisp and warming throughout. Heavy in body. Long aftertaste as the flavors seem to stick to the tongue for a while.

Drinkability: this is a very drinkable barleywine as this bottle went down fairly quickly. Try this one, but it is expensive.

Nøgne is a Scandinavian brewery I've recently grown a taste for despite their higher prices. I scooped up a bottle of this as soon as I saw it. Very fitting beer for a cold snowy day as was the case today. Not sure why this comes up as retired as my regular liquor store just received these recently and the bottle looks new, but lacks any dating. Either way this beer should hold up to aging so I'm not concerned.

I poured this into an over-sized wine glass, which reveals a nearly opaque dark brown with a tan head. The head eventually settles into a three hundred and sixty degree collar. No lacing, but expected given the style and alcohol content.

Smells of subtle citrus hops that fades into a caramel sweet malt bouquet. It's not in your face, but a pleasant mix and match of hops, malts, with a kick of alcohol that comes off as pleasant.

First sip is much more in your face and unpleasant in my opinion. The gentle qualities are lost in an astringent harsh use of hops. The caramel and soft sweetness is gone. Comes off as an unpleasant bitter alcohol taste. As I make my way through the glass I find I either become accustomed to the the taste or the beast has changed. Hops have become more subdued, but still seem astringent and harsh. Now I'm picking up on a hint of cocoa and a small resurgence in the sweetness that was so pleasant in the nose. Finishes dry and hot with a warming alcohol effect.

Mouthfeel is difficult to handle at first and seemed harshly carbonated, but as I make my way through the glass and eventually the 500mL. bottle I find it to be creamy and on par. Drinkability is low even given the style due to the harsh present of alcohol and astringent hop taste. This came off as surprising given what I thought was well developed in the nose.

I have looked forward to getting this beer for sometime and now I know why,poured into an oversized wine glass a deep dark brown with a tight formed almond colored head that left broken lace as it settled as I worked my way down the glass.Whoo intense aromas big leather and hop resin along with quite an alcohol kick nearly boozy but oh so inviting a prune/raisin element is there as well.Flavors are complex to the hilt as well as being potent,deep molasses and licorice combined with deep hoppy resiny goodness as well as a unrestrained alcohol shot really makes this a monster,the flavors are awesome all that in your face deep malt and intense hop really makes it a sipper.English Barley Wine are you kidding me?This is American style no doubt with the deep intense hop profile makes it American style easily,just a great brew.

Nogne 0 #100 Barleywine

"Most enjoyable in a comfortable chair in front of a roaring fire." Well, here I am in a run-of-the mill chair at the kitchen table...gonna have to move to the comfortable chair over in the living room. Near the fireplace, ...now, we're cookin'...it's not roaring, though...but it's good enough...

except that I forgot that it's the cat's chair now...okay, I'm on the couch then...

and pouring into my seldom-used Thomas Hardy's Ale snifter...

dark brown, big carbonation, huge head, filling most of this small snifter, a rich, roasty tan color...beautiful

aroma: cocoa, cola, nuts, and then wine, ripe dark fruits, and it develops and becomes richer and more brandy-like as we continue...a bit woody, as well...the more I drink it in through the nose, the more complex and wonderful it becomes...gorgeous.

Drink it, already!
Solid stuff, here, a mad charge on the palate, a motley mix of flavors at loose in the mouth...the wood, the chocolate malt, some bittersweet notes, (plenty hoppy, this, it turns out, at 80IBU), some dark fruit, ...an intriguing blend. Normally, I don't find so much chocolate in such a hoppy barleywine...plenty of American hops, Centennial, Cascade...no, Chinook, and Columbus...there's three of the C's anyway...

What an incredibly interesting barleywine, like nothing I've ever tasted! Like a stout, then an IPA, but strong enough to be an Imperial Stout. Rich malt, then bright, bold hops, along comes chocolate, followed by fruit. Long finish, but not obtrusive, nice and sold, laying in for the long haul.

This is exactly like they describe it, a brew for relaxing after a long evening, taking your time, and taking comfort from the rigors of the day and the demands that winter takes on us all.

Great stuff. Once again, the Norwegian's are showing they can do it as well as anyone! Go, Grimstad!

Appearance: Chocolatey brown, much like black coffee with a soft, fine, tan-tinged light beige head. Fair retention.

Smell: Red wine and hops come immediately to the fore, with berries, fermented grapes, ethanol, and a hop profile reminiscent of juniper and roses. Overall the beer leaves a woody, slightly roasty impression, very robust in all departments except the alcohol - which is extraordinarily well-hidden for 10%ABV.

Taste: Balanced as hell and very robust, but also very subdued and subtle for a 10% barleywine - clearly, this one is English. Hops are potent and spicy, especially in the finish, but the malts shine as well - very vinous, but also very beery - Merlot combined with a lovely amber ale. Tangy, bitter, sweet; mocha, nuts, pine, and brandy.

Mouthfeel: Tacky and medium-bodied.

Drinkability: Very nice indeed; not too big, nut also not too bland. Paired well with Thanksgiving dinner, all the way through from hors d'oeuvres to dessert.

The craftsmen at Nøgne Ø have had me captivated with their unique blend of European style and American boldness. I was definitely not going to let # 100 Barley Wine-Style Ale pass me by. Slender 500 ml. bottle, with a starkly attractive label style. The pour looked quite dark for a barleywine, while the head was three fingers tall and foamy. The smell was quite sweet and had me recall raisins, toffee, and cocoa, The taste was not typical of the style, as the malts felt very roasty and astringent. The bitterness was quite brazing as a result of the bone dry nature of the beer. The chocolate, roasted nuts, and smoke in the taste screamed Imperial Porter to me. A big blast of oak notes in the finish had me wondering whether this was barrel aged before bottling. Quite thin and fleeting in the mouth, this unusual Ale was well crafted, and sneaky in the alcohol presentation, but I would be hard pressed to call this a barleywine.

This beer poured a dark black (barley wine?) that looked a little smoky through the dimple in the bottom of my tulip with no real color other than the hazy smoke. This was a bit odd for me considering the style. The head was a nice dirt white film.

Smelled of acidic pine and lemon with a distant cocoa and caramel. There was also a distinct leathery smell along with some strawberries.

Tastes dry and hoppy with a tingly bite that picked up some sweet candy corn and a light coffee. This was followed by an astringent dry grain matched up with a similar hop dryness. The artful blend hid a lot well.

Feels heavy, frothy and foamy, but tasty. Seems to work well with the flavors.

Nice, but oddly dark. I enjoyed the use of hops in this one.

Poured from a 16.9oz bottle into two St. Bernardus goblets. Thanks to HeatherAnn for the assist!

A: Pours a rich looking chestnut color with ruby and plum highlights. Small khaki head caps the top of this and leaves some stubbornly sticky lace on the glass.

S: Initially, a big rush of hops that's followed closely by a big whiff of sweet caramel malt. Also noticed were raisin bread, alcohol, and bitter dark chocolate.

T: See above with flashes of cherry, cocoa, caramel, and a nice and dirty strain of yeast. Incredible!

M: Very bitter and ragged that gets tempered nicely by the caramel sweetness.

S: For the style, most excellent!

listed as a barleywine, I've seen it searched for a couple of times in the forums. Noticed this while wandering through Julios's in MA and thought why not I'll try it.
A - dark brown, borderline black. deep ruby glints when held up to the light. Dark creamy tan head that lasts through the entire glass.
S - dark fruits, citric hops, espresso and a good whiff of alcohol.
T - kind of a cross between an american barelywine and a robust porter. dark and malty, quite hoppy bitter and roasty.
M - full bodied, creamily carbonated, warming with a bitter lingering note.
D - an intriguing and unusual brew. One for an evening was plenty.

final notes - not quite one style or another with elements that are nice but not quite melding nicely in the playground. May round out with more age but for this review it's as experienced.

Appearance: Pours a dark brown, near black body with a huge, foamy beige head. Copious amounts of lacing.

Smell: The aroma is a blending of freshly-peeled citrus fruits and burnt chocolate cookies.

Taste: Double Fudge cookies with a reasonable sweetness that blends into an oven-roasted fruitiness and the taste of creosote-soaked citrus hops. A mild smokiness appears midway, as does the taste of hearty nine-grain bread. Finishes dry and bitter with an extra helping of roast.

Mouthfeel: Medium-full body. Medium carbonation.

Drinkability: An interesting, unique hrbid beer for sure with plenty to offer and begs (if not requires) to be sipped.

500ml bottle.

pours deep brown, nearly opaque, with a small very dense light brown head. the head drops fairly quick but leaves spotty lace behind.

aroma is nice. caramel. light alcohol. grapefruit and pine. lots of c-hops - centennial, cascade, chinook. bread and biscuit malt. bit of orange.

taste is great. medium bitterness level. nice caramel character. bit of roast. biscuit. bit of grapefruit and orange. touch of toffee.

mouthfeel is good. medium body. medium carbonation level.

drinkability is good. mostly balanced, with a just a slight lean towards alcohol. very nice though and a solid barelywine. i've been pretty impressed by just about everything i've had from nogne. good brewery.

Purchased at Green's on Ponce in Atlanta. Certainly not retired, and billed as a barley wine on the bottle. On the other hand, doesn't particularly look like a Barley wine or a dipa. Pours black with a white head that sticks around a bit and leaves some lacing. The smell is roasty, chocolatey, and winey. The taste is bitter with citrus up front, then comes chocolate. A big hit of pine throughout- or maybe that is Juniper? The mouthfeel is big, rich, and creamy. Quite drinkablconsidering the abv, but definitely a sipper.

This is just hitting some stores shelves, so I am wondering about the "retired" listing. Also, the bottle states that it is a Barley Wine, not a DIPA.

Pours a dark, nearly opaque, brown. There is about two inches of tan head that fades to a sheet, but leaves good lacing.

The aroma is strong on dark fruits and alcohol. There is a bitter coffee scent in the background, also. At first I thought it smelled like an English Barley Wine, but now it's leaning more towards a hoppy porter or stout. I think it's confused.

The taste of this one only lends to my "identity crisis" theory. Dark fruits,(almost burnt) bakers chocolate, dark roasted bitter coffee, a little pine and citrus hops, and a bunch of alcohol. Burning alcohol.

Solid, creamy mouthfeel. The fact that I am not sure (and neither is the beer) exactly what it is that I am drinking and this burning alcohol both knock the drinkability down. I had hoped for more. I think I might buy another bottle and lay it down for a while to see how it changes, as it is harsh right now.

500 ml bottle. Pours a brown cola color with a creamy off-white head that retains well and laces the glass.

The aroma is sweet sugary caramel malts and dark fruits with some spicy (slightly piney) hops and alcohol in the background.

The flavor is sweet and watery cola and some fruitiness with a harsh salty and tar-like bitterness at the finish. The alcohol is pretty harsh. The mouthfeel is medium to full and kind of watery.

Overall, too much harsh alcohol and bitterness for me. I don't get any grapefruit or pine from the hops which is disappointing. It reminds me some of Flying Dog's barley wine which I really didn't care for either.

Bottled. (#150) What better name of a beer to rate as beer no 100 than this? Dark copper with dense, beige/light tan head. It’s hazy, but that’s not easy to see because of the rather dark color. Nice carbonation too, and the head stays quite nice. Aroma is mostly fruity bitterness with pine. Flavor is hops, fruity, alcohol and malt. Caramel-sweet, malty beginning that quickly turns into bitterness and warming alcohol, and more bitterness towards the finish. Had this some times earlier at Uptown pub in Kristiansand, but they serve it directly from the fridge. It needs 12-15º C to show all of itselves. (051011)

A huge 4 finger light tan coloured head formed on the pour of this beast. Quite clear, yet dark for the style, almost a deep mahogany with blood red hues. Very mildly carbonated, yet quite decent retention considering the absence of carbonation to support its head. Gradually settles to leave a decent collar and somewhat fine yet full, almost clingy, clumps of lacings.

Caramel, hints of a red wine like vinous character, toffee and cocoa make for a complex malt bill, especially for an IPA. Perhaps some oxidation has taken place? Yet the hops are certainly not skunked, with a pronounced floral and citrus (mostly orange) character.

Wow, more like a hoppy barleywine, and a fine one at that, than an IPA with its deep, tasty and complex malt backbone. Reminiscent of Old Crustacean in this respect. Rich toffee, some caramel, rich vinous notes, leather, and powdery cocoa round out the solid malt backbone. The hops are there, but this is no hop bomb with its 80 IBUs balanced against such rich malts. Some grapefruit and pine notes that almost but not quite reach a stripping, resinous level, as well as a pronounced floral, earthy quality, with hints of oak and vanilla. Time to stop rating this as an american DIPA and go with its own strong merits. A woody hop bitterness and notes of a rich, dry red wine or even port carry on long into the aftertaste.

A very richly malted brew, with just the right amount of oxidation of the wort to produce a rich vinous character that adds to the overall presence of this ale. Rich, full bodied, smooth and creamy in feel, nicely contrasted by a sparkly low level of fine carbonation. Nicely hopped, but the 80 IBUs are barely noticeable against the rich and complex malt backbone. The hop bite, characteristic of both american and english hops gives way to the vinous qualities that linger long after the swallow.

Very drinkable for such a big, rich, bold brew. Certainly not very approachable or sessionable, but is a deep and complex sipper, that just may appeal to afficionados of red wines and port. Im glad i got to try this incredibly rich and complex brew. Way too much going on maltwise to be an american DIPA, but this is a great beer nonetheless. Ill be dishing out the bucks for more brews from Nogne, if i can still find their offerings at a store I've visited previously.

(Bottle conditioned, 500 ml. Courtesy of Erik Dahl, Venner av Nøgne Ø.) I received this remarkable beer with awe, mixed with great anticipation. Very few litres of #100 have been for sale to the public. Would I like it, or would the massive hops (80 IBU!) be too much for me? The cost of brewing it (= the massive amount of malts and hops required for a batch) made the brewers certain that it would be unprofitable as a permanent brew, particularly with Norwegian alcohol taxes. This impenetrable cloudy dark brown beer pours with a large to moderate tan head. Aroma is simply wonderful - Colombus hops galore, dark chocolate, leather, cigars, pipe tobacco, tar. The complexity remains in the flavour - extremely malty, very sweet, but also extremely bitter. The bitterness (which becomes medicinal and wormwood-like in the aftertaste) prevents me from giving this beer a full score. On a regular basis, I’d prefer Nøgne ؒs God Jul (which is world class this year, IMHO) and also their Porter. But what a great experiment #100 is!
