Bottle into Bruery tulip; I've seen this one on the shelf countless times and never grabbed a bottle, decided that needed to change on my last trip to the store.

Pours pitch black with a creamy 3-finger dark brown head, which settles down to a dense half-finger cap with impressive staying power.

Nose starts out with a nice mix of alcohol and espresso, dry and just a bit woody. The alcohol lends just a bit of brown sugar spice, though the espresso is the clear dominant note in this one, even though no actual espresso was used in brewing. A bit of dry cocoa underneath, but not too much.

Taste starts off with a bit of alcohol, some licorice, an earthy, woody, deeply-roasted espresso note that quickly segues into a burst of dark fruit and cocoa nibs, with a sharp-ish earthy bitterness leading the charge into the finish with just a bit of leafy hops peeking out. Finish itself is long, firmly bitter with the dry roastiness lending a wee bit of char as well. A nice mix of dark fruit and just a bit of cocoa finish things off.

Mouthfeel is pretty good; not quite the fullness or creaminess I'd like to see in the body, and the carbonation is a wee bit sharp. A bit of acidity from the hops may contribute to thae slight "thinness" of the body.

Drinkability is ok; this one is a bit on the hoppy side to me, a bit dry, could use a dash of richness to really make things pop. Doesn't quite sing to me.

Time for a good old Imperial Stout from those imperious bastards at Nøgne Ø - Det Kompromissløse Bryggeri A/S; which is to say the least a hearty mouthful of a name, here's hoping the brew provides a hearty mouthful too. Recommended to me by an Archive barman who has rated 1200+ beers when I asked for something like Black Buffalo (which I sorely miss).

Poured from a 500ml bottle into a Chimay chalice.

A: This is one black beauty of a stout with its fantastic obsidian body and a half centimetre brown head that dissipates to a nice sticky lace.

S: It certainly has a heavy aroma similar to Black Buffalo - dark chocolate, roasted coffee, barley malt with Vegemite and Bovril thrown in for good measure. There are hints of smoked Birch wood mingling around as well. This has the nose of a formidable ale!

T: Yep - this is a damn heavy Imperial Stout! The above aromas present themselves: dark chocolate, roasted coffee, barley malt, and a hint of Bovril. However it is the aforementioned smoked Birch wood that really adds a unique dimension, along with a finish that is astringent with almost no bitterness at all. There is also a noticeable (unwanted) metallic tang in there too.

M: Heavy bodied like some sort of 'beer gravy' and a tack flat carbonation. Quite smooth and oily too - a proverbial Julio Iglesias of stouts.

D: Consumed at the right temperature (12 celsius says the bottle) this is a rich, heady and flavoursome brew. The metallic note does diminish its rating, and it is not near as full on as Black Buffalo, nor was it ever going to be at 9% ABV. However colour me impressed as there is quite a lot happening with this 9% drop, and I quite enjoyed the fact that it doesn't hold back on the boldness. Nice one Nøgne Ø - Det Kompromissløse Bryggeri A/S!

Food match: The beer gravy comment I made earlier got me thinking of actually pouring this over slices of roast beef and giving the meal a side of roasted potatoes and peas... why drink a beer when you can eat it? Food for thought.

A: Pitch black with big, dark brown, rather low-lasting head, lacing is moderate.

S: Moderatly strong roasted malts aroma, coffee, dark chocolate also some burnt notes. Low hop aroma. Some black dried fruit notes - plums, pruns, but not dominant. Also some alcohol is present. Unfortunately slightly metallic sensations.

T: The taste is not so complex, mainly roasted malts, burnt flavours, medium bitterness. Low to medium dark fruit esters. Evident alcohol strength.

M: Semi-dry, roastiness and warming character noticable. Low to moderate carbonation, full body, creamy.

O: In overall I’d give this beer some time to mature in the bottle, perfect roastiness balanced with dark fruit esters and alcohol. It could be more malty and barley-wine like.

Pours a black color. 1/3 inch head of a tan color. Great retention and good lacing. Smells of wood, slight sweet malt, yeast, hint of roasted malt, alcohol, and slight hops. Fits the style of a Russian Imperial Stout. Mouth feel is sharp and crisp, with an average carbonation level. Tastes of sweet malt, slight roasted malt, alcohol, slight liquor, hint of yeast, and slight hops. Overall, good appearance, aroma, body, and blend.

a really hearty stout, appropriately dense for its norwegian heritage. dark brown almost black, with a soft eggshell finish and over an inch and a half of micro bubble tan head as dense as they come. the nose shows a simple beer at heart, dark barley, cara deepness, and a lioghter almost herbal quality, but rather straightforward. the flavor starts with the dark roast of the barley, and a residual sugar that is tough to explain. maybe slightly under attenuated property, but it works with the rest of the heft here. come dry dark bakers chocolate and a hint of licorice meld into a rather smooth semisweet finish that suggests oatmeal, but i dont know if its there for real or not. bitterness abounds after the swallow though, a nice transition. body is enormous, overweight even, but in a wintery context with some nice rare red meat, its a match made in heaven. smooth as gravy. worth what they ask for it.
