From the moment you crack this open its the nose which hits you a
nd seduces you. Deep, sweet, earthy and luxurious with a rich element of truffle, this beer just makes you beg for more. On the palate it starts big and hoppy before developing a distinquished chocolaty malty quality. Looks good to with initially a deep tan milky coffee appearance of head. The body is just enough to hold the elements together and hide the final longish flourish. Well balanced and restrained yet lethal if drunk too quickly.
Nice work.

Poured from the 500mL bottle into a pint glass.

A: The beer is completely opaque and black even when held directly to light. The head is also one of the darkest I've ever seen, a thick foamy much seeping up from the mud of this brew. The whole thing looks almost like some melted chocolate ice cream on top of some motor oil. Crazy.

S: Very chocolatey with some booze hidden underneath. Really reminds me of chocolate cookies right after they have come out of the oven, then smothered in chocolate pudding which was then allowed to sizzle on the still-hot baking pan. So in other words, some burnt chocolate and roasted malt with lot s of dough and molasses, topped off with a somewhat sweet character. Crazy.

T: Chocolatey with some tobacco smoke and plenty of dough and roasted coffee. Amazingly complex. I'm sure I could come up with a different note each time I took a sip of this. Not as boozy as some imperial stouts and that's a good thing. I expected this thing to give me a brutal punch at the end, but in reality is was very mellow and only revealed even more flavor as it slowly made its way into my stomach and then my bloodstream. Crazy.

One word keeps coming to mind each time I think about this beer and it's "crazy." Not in a super hoppy DIPA way that kicks you in the face with a huge amount of some flavor, but in that it's supremely hard to pin this one down. It's crazy because it's so many contradictory things at once. Not only in that such a huge beer can be subtle, but also that beneath that subtlety lies a complexity that is like a gift every time it hits your tongue. Well balanced and extremely flavorful, strong and yet dangerously drinkable, this is a beer that I will want to come back to again and again.

Time for a good old Imperial Stout from those imperious bastards at Nøgne Ø - Det Kompromissløse Bryggeri A/S; which is to say the least a hearty mouthful of a name, here's hoping the brew provides a hearty mouthful too. Recommended to me by an Archive barman who has rated 1200+ beers when I asked for something like Black Buffalo (which I sorely miss).

Poured from a 500ml bottle into a Chimay chalice.

A: This is one black beauty of a stout with its fantastic obsidian body and a half centimetre brown head that dissipates to a nice sticky lace.

S: It certainly has a heavy aroma similar to Black Buffalo - dark chocolate, roasted coffee, barley malt with Vegemite and Bovril thrown in for good measure. There are hints of smoked Birch wood mingling around as well. This has the nose of a formidable ale!

T: Yep - this is a damn heavy Imperial Stout! The above aromas present themselves: dark chocolate, roasted coffee, barley malt, and a hint of Bovril. However it is the aforementioned smoked Birch wood that really adds a unique dimension, along with a finish that is astringent with almost no bitterness at all. There is also a noticeable (unwanted) metallic tang in there too.

M: Heavy bodied like some sort of 'beer gravy' and a tack flat carbonation. Quite smooth and oily too - a proverbial Julio Iglesias of stouts.

D: Consumed at the right temperature (12 celsius says the bottle) this is a rich, heady and flavoursome brew. The metallic note does diminish its rating, and it is not near as full on as Black Buffalo, nor was it ever going to be at 9% ABV. However colour me impressed as there is quite a lot happening with this 9% drop, and I quite enjoyed the fact that it doesn't hold back on the boldness. Nice one Nøgne Ø - Det Kompromissløse Bryggeri A/S!

Food match: The beer gravy comment I made earlier got me thinking of actually pouring this over slices of roast beef and giving the meal a side of roasted potatoes and peas... why drink a beer when you can eat it? Food for thought.
