Smoked rye barley wine from a growler. This fine ale pours a hazy brownish red with a thin
off white head that dissipates quickly to a thin ring leaving light lacing. Nose of smoked malts,
spicy rye, deep caramel malts, and alcohol. Flavor is smoked malts to the fore with sweetness
to the sides and back with lingering smoked malts. Brown sugar, licorice, and spices I find
rather hard to put my finger on, almost a sea salt like flavor persists mixing with the peppered
flavor of the rye, like a dark salted rye bread. Medium dry finish/body is amplified by the
smoke which I am in no way a smoked fan, this one is done pretty nicely though. Nice warming
alcohol at the back keeps this one solidly in the sipper category. Nice indeed.
Not my standard barley wine cup of tea, but a good one to lay down at some point for a
number of years to see how it matures.

Tobacco and tar in aroma, with smoky notes and molasses. Flavor is smoky and very phenolic, plastic. I guess it's a rauch-ley-wine.

500ml bottle into a Treehouse snifter.

A - Pours a muddy brown with auburn edges. Decent two fingers of head with somenice lacing.

S - And we have our first problem. Peat smoke in a non-barrel-aged barleywine? Like roasted bandaids, it ruins the aroma, and it overwhelms anything else that might be there. WTF?

T - Yup, pretty much like the nose led me to believe, this tastes like it took all the worst aspects of a Islay scotch barrel and none of the good, and of course it wasn’t even in a barrel so that makes no sense at all. Heavy peat, some bitterness from the hops, and not much else. Maybe some roast from the malt, but it’s hard to tell. Maybe if I was a bigger fan of Islays I’d enjoy this, but I’m not.

M - Pretty thick and coating, with a long, dry finish. Not bad, maybe the best aspect of the beer.

O - This is shit. Can’t believe I got conned into paying $12 for this turd. I’m struggling to finish this glass, let alone the whole bottle.

500ml split. Definitely some age on this one, just not sure how much - maybe 4-5 years old I'm guessing.

Appearance - Dark brown pour, some orange highlights but really not much clarity here. Beige head retains as a cap for a while, eventually reducing to a thick ring. Considering the ABV+age, pretty decent.

Smell - Definitely a good amount of salty smoke presence there but not over the top. It melds well with raisin, caramel, some brown sugar and spicy, earthy tones.

Taste - Scotch-like smoke is still prevalent but just a little more restrained here it seems. The barleywine base is nice and again melds well - darkfruit, caramel, brown sugar, various things from the spice rack, licorice, burnt toast - makes for quite an interesting flavor profile.

Mouthfeel - Big and very smooth with medium carbonation. A bit of warming alcohol there but quite drinkable for 11%, the smoke keeps this one a sipper though, glad I split this.

Overall - Was kind of intimidated by this one before opening it, expecting a super abrasive rauchwine monster, and though it kinda is, it's in a good way as this wound up being much more smooth, drinkable and complex than expected. I'm not a huge fan of the salty-scotch-smoke thing but it worked nicely here with a good barleywine base and weird spice profile. A big warming sipper probably best suited for winter nights.
