500 mL bottle from the LCBO. Bottled on July 18 2012, this is one of several Nøgne Ø brews I picked up in London last month. Tripels are one of my favourite Belgian styles - but the key word there is 'Belgian', because honestly a lot of non-Belgian-made tripels leave me underwhelmed for one reason or another. Not gonna get ahead of myself though, because the last Nøgne Ø brew I cracked open was superb. Poured into a snifter.

Pours a cloudy golden-apricot colour, and even though the pour was fairly aggressive I didn't get much more than one fingers' worth of soapy white head. It wilts quickly, leaving nothing more than a thin collar and film on the surface in its wake. Subsequent pours from the bottle were equally flat. The aroma is yeasty, with big red apple and pear notes, as well as hints of orange zest, coriander and clove. Slightly herbal and spicy. Enjoyable enough, but not very complex and kind of subdued. Kind of reminds me of a witbier.

I wasn't terribly impressed up to this point, but it does taste pretty good I suppose, with the profile accomplishing most of what I expect from a tripel, with a few odd additions that switch the formula up a bit. It starts off sweet, with wheat malt, candi sugar and lots of the usual orchard fruit notes - red appleskin, apricots and orangepeel being the most noticeable features. The citrusy notes give it a slightly unusual tartness mid-sip, but this quickly gives way to clove, coriander, and white pepper spice, as well as some faint smokiness, lots of yeast and overripe banana in the finish. A little boozy, but not to an unusual degree for the style, and it works fairly well in the context of the other flavours. Spicy, sweet aftertaste with some lingering heat. Medium-bodied, with perfectly restrained carbonation that gives it a spritzy mouthfeel without being distracting. A good sipper that improves markedly as it warms.

Not the best tripel I've ever had, but a pretty good effort nonetheless. The addition of Scottish peat-smoked malt isn't too prominent in the flavour, but might explain a few of the departures from more traditional features of the style. My only real complaint is the spiciness, which becomes tiring quickly - this pint bottle is probably the ideal serving size, and I doubt I'd be up for seconds. To be fair though, it does become smoother as it warms.

Final Grade: 3.72, an acceptable B grade. Nøgne Ø's Tiger Tripel is a solid Belgian-style ale, but in my opinion it doesn't quite measure up to the true heavyweights of the style - the titans of Tripelitania like Chimay or La Fin du Monde. Not a completely orthodox example of the style, so the minor tweaks may be enough to make this one worthy of a try - assuming you're looking for something that follows a slightly different vein than those classic tripels. I wouldn't go out of my way seeking it out though, and I doubt I'd pick it up again (mostly because of the price). I still enjoyed the glass, so I wouldn't necessarily discourage others from trying this, but it's not a standout in its category.

Appearance: dull gold, hazy; egg white head fades after a few minutes to a film

Aroma: sweet fruit - pears, tangerine; just a hint of tang; yeast spice; smoky mold

Taste & Mouthfeel: wow, intense flavour! an onslaught of sweet and tangy, although hard to really define, not as fruity as the scent, it's a blend and more candy like; sharp and cutting, with a dry finish; getting some butterscotch; there's complexity with hints of spice, breath of alcohol, and pleasant texture (silky smooth, buttery); didn't pick it up at first, but the bottle mentions peat smoke and then it clicks as one of the mystery notes - it's subtle but is a vital part of the character

Overall: the sweetness is cloying, in a mouth puckering way, which distracts from some interesting (and powerful) flavours

500ml bottle. How do we make our mark on this venerable style? Why, take something fully foreign, and just toss it right in there. Sigh.

This beer pours a hazy, murky medium golden straw hue, with two fingers of loosely foamy, bubbly dirty white head, which leaves a low-lying, seemingly undulating vista of wavecrest lace around the glass as it duly evaporates. Kind of weird not to have to clean up overflow on the counter from an overly aggressive head.

It smells of mildly peaty smoke, brine, semi-sweet pale malt, acrid yeast, a middling pome fruitiness, some suppressed candi sugar, and a bit of witbier spiciness. The taste is more thankfully restrained phenolic, forlorn Scottish isle medicinal peatiness, tacked on, rather than deftly blended, to a yeasty, sugary pale Belgian maltiness, with a white pepper and blotted coriander spiciness standing by in the wings.

The bubbles are pretty laid back, like a lolling Lowlands brae (keeping with the theme here), the body an indistinct medium weight, and actually rather smooth, the Island effect choosing to fully cease operations here and now, as a slight creaminess burgeons.

Thankful am I to Nøgne Ø's acquiescence in keeping this particular Scottish malt mostly on the down-low, as eventually the standard Tripel offerings come bleeding through. I know they lie just across the North Sea from Scotland proper, but this just feels like they had a bit of Islay malt left over from that mindfuck of a brew called Sunturnbrew, and had to find a use for it. Unnecessary, when the underlying Tripel may be (we shall never know now, with this one) well worthy all on its own.

A - A promising golden hazy fluid with a real nice white head. The head looks creamy and thats always pleasant to watch to.

S - A citrus and pine like hop scent that is just over the top and that makes it unpleasant.

T - A little sweetness upfront and the pine and the citrus set in. Almost immediately you notice a flowery taste to it as well, it was totally unsuspected. It doesn't make the beer better tasting though.

M - A soft to medium carbonation, a soft and creamy body (which is nice) and a bitter aftertaste.

O - Something is really off in this one, it isn't sour though, so I don't think it's infected. I think it is the hop combination or choice that makes this beer weird.

Interesting tripel that begins with fruity and honeyish yeast ends with noticeable understated bitterness of 35 IBU. 3/8 inch of head. Fruity bananna aroma. Good drinkability for me, though not for the one I shares it with . Nice but somewhat overpriced

Golden colour with thin but quite creamy white head.

Quite spicy with pepper and some cloves being the first things i noticed in the scent. Sweetness is there too. An almost flowery quality to this. Cool.

Not as complex in the flavour as some other tripels I have had. Sweetness is fairly strong initially but gets cleaned up a little by a spicy earthy finish. Very drinkable.

A little thicker in the mouth than many super-attenuated tripels are. Not a bad thing, but for me not a great thing.

Tiger Tripel pours a yellow color. It's quite hazy, and looks gold when held to light. A soft white head caps it. It's rather modest, standing about a finger in height. It fell to a surface covering quickly and held firm there for a bit. Lacing was spotty and light.

The nose is a little on the weak side, but is pretty good. It features a nice mix of golden fruit and spices. Apple and pear are noted. It smells a little sweet. The spicy side features clove and pepper. Yeast is noted, but doesn't smell particularly Belgian in character. Hopefully it's different in flavor. Alcohol is blended pretty well and isn't all that noticeable.

The flavor is pretty good. About on-par with the nose. It kicks off with a mix of apple and pear. It falls on the sweet side, but just barely. Spices follow and are fairly intense. Clove and pepper are the most notable. For some reason, they don't leave the typical impression of spicy Belgian yeast. Belgian yeast is not really noted in flavor. There's an interesting, grassy hop flavor on the tail. Maybe a Noble hop? I don't know for certain. Alcohol is masked well. Finishes spicy, earthy, and dry.

Tiger Tripel has a medium body. Carbonation seems rather active and buzzy. It's not overtly bad, but it's not smooth. For what it's worth, it goes down rather easy for a 9% abv beer.

Nøgne Ø generally brews very good beer. Tiger Tripel is pretty good beer, but falls short of Nøgne Ø standards. It's short on Belgian yeast, which is exactly what makes or breaks a Tripel. It's not a bad beer by any stretch, but it definitely has a few shortcomings as a Tripel that are difficult to ignore. Eh. It's alright. Definitely worth a try if you see it.

Pours a cloudy golden orange color with a dense pure white head that settles into a light ring.

The aroma is fruity, with apples being the main component. There also is a floral, perfumey scent from the yeast. A good amount of clove picked up in the nose.

The taste is sweet from the candi sugar. A floral honey flavor, with clove, and a grassy hop bitterness in the end. There is some light apple skin flavor but it is quite subtle. A bit of an alcohol flavor but its not harsh.

The feel is light to moderate with fizzy carbonation, drinks easy. There is a bit of a grassy bitterness from the hops which helps balance the brew.

This is pretty good representation of the style. It could use some bolder flavors but it drinks quite nicely.

Bottle: Poured a cloudy dirty beige color ale with a large foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma consists of fruity ester with overly sweet malt base. Taste is a mix of bready malt with overly sweet notes and light fruity ester. Body is quite full with good bottle conditioning and good carbonation with not much apparent alcohol. I thought this was too sweet for my taste with limited complexity and no yeast expression.

Poured from the bottle into a tulip glass.

Opaque and thick bodied appearance, with a nice booming apricot orange, to brass yellow. Head is a very cream forming off white to tan, with about two fingers. Nice creamy top with some whipped up like sheets of lacing. Very nice.

Excellent aroma for a tripel. Good hints of sweet bready like malts, and then some classic fruit pear and juiced apple qualities too. Bakery sweetness, some good controlled candy sugar that's not too out of control, adding to the fruit qualities nicely. Some faint banana, some good variety on the fruit angle, getting into fruit basket quality. Very very good.

Very nice delivering palate. Super creamy mouthfeel, coating with honey and vanilla like tones just amazing and them most impressive thing about the brew it seems. Lots of whipped cream and banana surprising quality in flavor. Warm hints of pear, even some soft tropical melon like qualities. Whipped up body like you could spread it on cake, with a big angel food taste, and soft graham crackers. Lingering spiced nutmeg and even peppermint action on the finish with a nice bit of dryness too.

Overall a great tripel, very different too from the standard Belgians also, very surprised by this as well.

Picked up a bottle at Rick's Wine and Gourmet.

Poured a very cloudy yellow and golden hue. Not much for clouds moving in the glass as the whole beer was very murky. The head took a little effort to form, a bit more then I would expect from a Tripel. The aroma was pretty flowery and fruity, not a very light smell at all. Again a bit different then the tripel's I am use to. The taste was a very powerful fruit and flower taste with a medium body. The brew was not as crisp as I feel the style should be, but the medium body and flavors packed a powerful and welcomed punch. Carbonation was minimal which surprised me but i can see why as the flavor was very strong and did not need such. Would recommend to anyone who favors tripels. Worth the try as this is a interesting brew.

Drank from my Duvel Tulip

A - Pours a murky yellow colour with a head that reduces quickly to nothing

S - Small phenols of spicey yeast and malt

T - Nice balanced flavours of spice and yeast with a malty aftertaste. The booze is well hidden. The finish slightly sticky.

M - Medium body and carbonation.

O - A very good example of the style let down by appearence and aroma.

A: Pours a deep, translucent gold, capped by a frothy one and a half finger white head. The head settles down to a very thin layer but resists the urge to break up reasonably well, eventually lacing spotty lacing behind.

S: Lots of sweet fruit up front with apples, pears, and some light green grapes, all seemingly dusted with cinnamon. Behind the fruit lies some lemon zest, peppery notes and wheat with a light toastiness.

T: Fruit is up front again in a slightly less sweet capacity with apples and pears taking the lead again, along with some light figs and peaches. Spicy notes come in mid-palate with pepper, lemon zest and some notes of cinnamon and nutmeg. Wheat makes a brief appearance just before the finish before fruit takes back over for a long semi-sweet finish. Very light alcohol heat.

M: Medium to full bodied with moderate carbonation, has a creamy feel over the tongue.

D: Could be a bit lighter on the tongue and the booze could be a bit more hidden, but overall drinks easily.

Appears a light orange toned gold with a fluffy head of white. Scattered bits of lacing are left around the glass.
Smell is of pils malt, apricot, light citrus, poached pear, and a touch of floral notes with hints of spice.
Taste is of the aromas with a nice punch of sugary orange flowing along the palate.
Mouthfeel is medium-full bodied, smooth, low carbonation, and a nice mellow finish.

Picked this up at my favorite beer store in Belgium, Dranken Geers. Murky amber-orange pour with a bright white two finger head with nice retention and great lacing. Pretty typical Belgian Triple nose with lots of spicy, grassy, citrus notes along with hints of Belgian yeast, lemon, and what appears to be a touch of peat??? The taste is a bit less typical with more sweet caramel malt than I had expected. Hints of tangerine, lemon, grass, yeast, biscuit, bubblegum, apple, and more of that curious peaty character. The mouthfeel is surprisingly creamy and slightly chewy with nice carbonation and a smooth finish. Overall, this was a pretty solid beer right up to where the peat reared its ugly head. Just can't relate to a peaty triple...

Poured into corsendonk chalice. Golden straw and bright clarity with a light cloud white head.

Aromas of pilsner malt, honey, rose, vanilla bean and licorice.

Flavor has a pronounced licorice and white pepper spice note
Some honey, orange peel and yeasty notes (from 2nd pour) finish is extremely dry with chalkiness that I particularly look for in a tripel.

Drinkable and hides alcohol well, interestimg flavors slightly different then Belgian homeland tripels. Worth trying and seeking more than once.

Hazy orange, with a finger or so of white head. Typical tripel nose of pears, green apple, sweet sugary malt, spicing and even the slightest peat which I could pick up on. Peat (increasingly prominent with warmth), earth and more traditional tripel notes on the palate, in terms. Light metallic, but a sugary finish. Medium high effervescence, and some peat into the finish. A curious take on the style, and it doesn't turn out to be all that bad, considering I've been relatively adverse to peat lately.

Poured from a 16.9oz bottle into a generic goblet.

A: Pours a dirty, hazy, golden hue. 1/2 finger sliver of bright-white foam perched on top disappears quickly and leaves some minor lacey specks.

S: Spicy, fruity yeast. Spiced pears, toasted malt, and fruity alc. Hints of red apples, too.

T: Spicy! Cinnamon, brown sugar, pears, apples, and a really interesting flavor of smokey malt.

M: Prickly and peppery. Fruity sweetness mixed with spicy alcohol solvency. Finishes dry and peppery.

D: Very nice. Nøgne Ø turns out another winner!

pours a cloudy orangey amber with nice carbonation, little head, little lacing, but good and frothy how it should be. i could use some more floral hops in the nose, a little more cirtus.

let this beer warm up a little, i don't know if it is just me, but it seems some of the higher ABV brews benefit from airing out a little. the flavors really open up and you can really savor the sweet wheat malt profile in this Tiger Tripel. this turns out to be a rather thick beer as you let it come up to temperature. not quite a true tripel, but a nice belgian-inspired beer for sure.

i poured an 8oz portion and drank it over about 30 minutes. the last sip was easily the most delicious.

bought this again today -- couldn't remember if i had had it before. i am surprised my review did not mention the subtle dry grass and spicy flavors i am getting now.

not a A-grade TRIPEL -- but a good beer nonetheless. considering the beer is brewed in NORWAY and i am getting it in California for a decent price, Nogne 0 is an amazing, affordable import craft beer option. i think their darker beers are more successful but they are all quality.

Poured into tulip glass:

Pours clouded golden with a white head that becomes a patch. Some trailing lace sticks, then vanishes.

The smell is of wheat tang - bready - with a tart orange fruitiness.

The taste is of bready wheat tang, a hint of tart. As it progressed (warmed/near end) there was a touch of smoked meat? Something a bit odd - maybe mustiness of hops? Some alcohol shows, but reasonably restrained for abv level. Finishes with an herbal dryness.

Carbonation is on the mild side, not quite reaching effervescent. Light-to-medium bodied.

It has the herbal dryness associated with the style. A decent stab at the style.

Poured from a 500 ml bottle into a chalice. The bottle's label has a spot where the brewer was supposed to stamp a "bottled on" date, but no such date is present. The bottle, despite having sat still for a very long time, still had a minor eruption of foam when opened.

Pours a hazy golden yellow, with a 1/2" white bubbly hea that quickly disapates, leaving a ring of white around the edge of the glass.

Bubblegum, sourpatch kids, banana, clove and creamy malt combine for an intersting aroma. Being a noob on what tripels should smell like, it is hard to say if this is typical or not.

Has a tart, acidic flavor to start, with sweet funk, floral notes, honey and a slight doughiness rounding and smoothing its start. Finishes dry and sticky on the tongue.

Medium bodied, this Belgian-style ale lacks the "softer" feel so many ales of this genre seem to have. Carbonation is also lower, and the tongue is left rather dry.

A decent ale, and one whic I am enjoying. It is opening up and becoming sweeter as it warms, with an almost yam-like flavor that works well. This would have been a great brew to crack open at Thanksgiving; maybe I'll grab another for next year.

Appearance: Cloudy, hazy gold, with minimal head.

Smell: A light aroma of citrus, wheat, and spicies.

Taste: Spices, malt, and a hint of apricot...not too bold, or full...a spicy, flowery taste lingers on the tongue, but isn't overpowering.

Mouthfeel: Soft, light carbonation...wouldn't mind a bit more carbonation.

Drinkability: A very drinkable, and soft tripel. Alcohol taste is hidden quite well, and makes for a very smooth finish.

First had: on tap at Ebenezer's Pub, Lovell, ME

Pours a nice golden-yellow color, with a slight haze, moderate carbonation, and two fingers of creamy white head. Aroma of light malts, citrus and light fruits, yeast, and floral notes. Light, pale malts in the taste, backed up by floral hops, and bitter citrus zest, with some mild pear and peach flavors, and just a hint of spice. Slight alcohol bite. Medium mouthfeel, and quite drinkable.

A - Lots of loud foamy head that sticks around long enough that you have to wait a bit before you can drink it. Light apricot color.

S - A mix of apply fruit and, I swear, a bit of leather like you get in some scotches. Interesting.

T - Fresh, bright, and clean. The booze is just prominent enough to be noticed but not enough to be distracting. It's well integrated as a flavor component. The warmer it gets, the more of an apple cider flavor I get. It's interesting and crisp while colder, sweeter and maltier when warmer. Neat.

M - Somehow this is sort of dry while at the same time ending a bit sticky and nectary... and then slightly dry again. Fun.

O - This is really pleasant, and I'm not big on this style. Very well balanced, tight, classy. Another winner from Nogne O. My reigning champ favorite brewery. I won't say it's remarkably robust or complex, but it's a surprisingly easy drinker, and well done.

Decent two-finger, near-white head. The broth is lightly hazy. The color is darker gold. Good ring lace.

Lightly sour with a dose of pale malts. The essence of citrus and fresh flowers come to mind on the smell.

Sweet and sour, very close in flavor to a French Saison. The alcohol is muted despite the level. Perhaps this is way too easy to drink. The body is full with a lower carbonation. Frankly, I don't find this to be a typical Tripel. While this is a good beer, it is not a traditional Tripel.
