(4.5) A: This is what I call beautiful. Cloudy and particle laden with a rich grapefruit colour and beautiful creamy and very bubbly foam head. Appears rustic and near cask-like. Commendable retention and healthy lacing.

(4.0) S: Grapefruit, sweet mango, damp and earthy pine, lemon zest, nutty qualities, caramel, and light spices. There are some real enticing mossy and earthy qualities in this but they are a little hidden. Overall good stuff.

(4.0) T: Buttered biscuits, non-tart grapefruit, bitter pine, spices including nutmeg and cloves, and toffee. This is quite smooth and creamy with not necessarily a lot of bite or harshness which translates to quite an easy-drinking double IPA. Similar to aroma with a solid earthy character that’s reminiscent of wood cask IPA’s.

(4.5) M: Full bodied with a lower carbonation. Definitely viscous with a real chewy and particle laden texture. Well done.

(4.0) D: Overall a very good double IPA that lends towards the malty side of things with an earthy emphasis. A double IPA I could easily drink and not tire of.

Bottled on 13.01.2014.
Pours hazy orange, half finger white head. Sticky froth on the glass.
Nice pine and citrusy hops in the smell, with a hint of sweet tropical fruit too and some peach. Mango, pink grapefruit, blood oranges. Faint caramel.
Taste starts rather rough, with crisp tasty (nice sour-sweet balance) citrus (tangerines, grapefruit), getting sweeter with mango and lychee afterwards. Pine resin and hop oils are pretty dank and spicy, but caramel malts smooth things out in the middle. Green bitter finish, with a dry leafy aftertaste (not a lot of fruitiness lingering).
Low carbonation, smooth, chewy. Nicely hidden alcohol.
A decent DIPA, but doesn't really blow away. The hops are a bit muddled. Didn't really like the aftertaste, gets tobacco-like and ruins the otherwise great taste.

500ml bottle. This is apparently the commercial implementation of a Norwegian homebrewing champion's recipe - always a cool thing to see!

This beer pours a rather hazy medium bronzed amber hue, with slowly swirling black speck sediment, and two fingers of weakly foamy, and bubbly off-white head, which leaves some splotchy inkblot lace around the glass as it quickly bleeds away.

It smells of pungent orange and grapefruit oil extract, resinous pine needles, rather sweet caramel/toffee malt, further demarara and maple sugary notes, a bit of diacetyl, and more weakly leafy perfumed hops. The taste is bready, somewhat nutty caramel malt, buttery toffee, muted citrus cream, wet forest floor pine, a mild orchard fruitiness, and leafy, earthy, and slightly soused hops.

The bubbles are fairly restrained, and barely perceptible at times, the body a decent medium-full weight, and generally smooth, with a plain, airy creaminess. It finishes off-dry, the grainy, bready caramel malt starting to unravel, the hops having already done so.

A sort of uneven, and in the end, underwhelming DIPA. It's drinkable, sure, and the ABV is well integrated, but I'm getting little punchiness beyond the initial aroma - this thing's over 8 months old now, it may be on the edge of wilting. Anyways, the roots are indeed showing here, I'm afraid, but I'm not about to blame either of the two captains (master or apprentice), or even the distributor - it's just unfortunately going to have to sit as is - a so-so example of the style.

Pours an amber/copper color with the perfect head.
Hops will punch you in the nose but that's what I want from my DIPAs.
The taste was complex. A good amount of malts lessens the hops so even non-hop-heads will enjoy this beer. Hop-heads don't worry, you will still get you hop fix. Some orange and caramel flavors are present.
I enjoyed this DIPA a lot! Be warned though, it's almost $10 for 16.9 oz.
