250ml bottle wrapped in red tissue paper and presented in a red tin. Like the 1st edition, this is fermented with sake yeast: this one weighs in at only 13.5% compared to the 17% of the first edition.

Pours a vaguely reddish tinted amber, with a lattice of large bubbles that form a very pocked, open white head. Very thick, quite gelatinous body that holds some minimal, but extremely fine and powdery carbonation. Some lacing forms in tiny specks. Looks pretty good.

Nose initially gives off some organic smoke and resin characters. Once it's swirled, there are deeper, earthier tones to it: soil, dead yeast, some dried lemon skin, shoe polish, all backed with a substantial volatile booziness. There's a faintly flat port tone as well, perhaps a little oxidised, or a little muted. It's very interesting.

Taste is very strangely sharp, and very full. Big burnt toffee tones dominate, with a significant length to the palate: the burnt character lingers for a long time, while the sweetness and fullness in the body ensure that it sticks around. Other characters come forward too: some smoke, berries, flat inorganic lemon, and booziness like a real spirit drained of its actual flavour. It's very strange.

Feel is full and sharp. It's matches everything nicely.

Yes, it's very nice. It's also very unique. I think I like this more than the first edition because it's less hot and less messy: this allows the sake yeast to provide some character and uniqueness to the brew without killing it with booze. This is a more balanced and more interesting outing in this very strange realm. (1,601 characters)

250ml bottle, wrapped in red tissue paper, and encased in a red metal tin. Brewed with sake yeast No. 7, apparently - someone with more knowledge of sake would have to explain what that actually means. Brewed 12/20/2011, so this already has 2+ years of age on it.

This beer pours a dark, murky copper-tinged dirty dishwater brown colour, with one skinny finger of pure soap bubble head, which pops away in a mere instant, leaving a bit of falling firework ash lace around the glass as things slowly sink away.

It smells of sweet, sugary caramel malt, big tropical fruit - mango, guava, lychee, and kiwi - a faint earthy yeastiness, kirsch liqueur, and a soft leafy mustiness. The taste is likewise rather fruity up front - more dense, exotic tropicals - lychee and gooseberries, mostly - with a somewhat woody and bready caramel malt, strangely sedate yeast, simmering and edgy alcohol-forward fruit wine, and more musty, leafy hop echoes.

The carbonation is actually quite active, in the form of a thin frothiness, the body a decent medium weight, and plainly smooth, with a lilting cold creaminess. It finishes still quite sweet, the pudding-like fruitiness not exactly missing a step.

Overall, very much the result of an English Barleywine, brewed with the biggest, fruitiest sake yeast strain. I just noticed that this offering has a 100 IBU rating - that's hard to believe, until I stopped and thought about, one - the age, and two - the actual balancing effort that must be in place (and duly under the radar) here to keep all that fruit and malt sweetness in check. A complex, enjoyable, and just a wee bit challenging brew - neat stuff. (1,648 characters)

Served in room temperature, aged for about a year.

Appearance: It's not the prettiest sight, actually. A brownish tint, pours next to no head. To be fair, this is probably due to the type of beer this is -- and the peculiar sake yeast -- but I would've hoped simple black or something instead of the muddy water. Probably it look better in low light!

Aroma: Boozy, with sour cherries and some lambic-type sharp bitterness. Rather intriguing, although I can already tell that the alcohol is going to be a large part of this.

Taste: Sweet and fruity, but not overly so. The alcohol is certainly present, but it's not overwhelming. The beer has several wine-like characteristics, although it does feel rather heavier than many red wines of similar strength. The beer has a certain sharpness and bitterness to it, once again reminding me of lambics, especially those by Cantillon. It's good for slow sipping.

Mouthfeel: Smoother than I expected, perhaps only medium-bodied. Slightly oily.

Overall: An interesting experiment, since it's brewed with sake yeast. This edition is now retired, but I never had the slightly stronger first edition. I do think that it was worth doing, and I hope that Nøgne Ø keeps experimenting with this concept! It doesn't have much to do with sake, of course, but I do think that the wine-like characteristics are more due to the yeast than anything else. The appearance reduces the appeal of the beer a little bit, but everything else is in order. (1,481 characters)

Picked this up at La Capsule Cave à Bière in Nancy, France. Murky brown pour with essentially no head and very little lacing. The nose is very sweet and boozey and complex. Tons of earthiness and dark fruit along with hints of brown sugar, raisins, caramel, black cherries, tobacco, and strong vinous notes. The taste has a unique woody, earthy sweetness with lots of booze along with hints of brown bread, subtle smoke, raisins, lychee, caramel, and brown sugar. The mouthfeel is thick and syrupy with cloying sweetness and a strange aftertaste. Overall, this is a really complex and unique beer, but way too sweet and boozey for my tastes. (650 characters)

Pours a reddish colour. Head is whispy, cream-coloured bubbles around the edge. A swill gives it some foamy density, but not real lacing. OK.

Smells kinda sweet, with a mild roast to it. Some notes of toffee, with vanilla, cardamom and odd citrus. Not sure what it is, but it's not bad.

Taste is very intense. A plummy, jammy kind of sweet palate with huge malty notes, sticky toffee and some roasty notes without enough robust grounding (it still tastes super sweet in spite of them). Kind of liqueury, with some edgier notes but sweet, sticky and almost cloying.

Full and boozey, with a pull from the hotness at the end. Confronting.

Not an everyday drinker, but so full-on I can't even really recommend this for tasting to everybody. Some intriguing notes, but it's off-puttingly strong and sweet. (804 characters)

250ml bottle poured into tulip 14/4/14

A I get a big hiss when I pop the cap but not much life when I dump it down the center, just a thin film that's gone in seconds, murky brownish amber liquid and I can see a few bubbles struggling to get to the surface

S lots of brown sugar, plum, sugar coated raisins, yeasty notes, candied cherries and pineapple, call me crazy but I get some peat smoke and have no idea where its coming from, ju-jubes, and salty brine? there's a few things going on here I can't quite figure out, some toasted coconut perhaps? I like it but I'm left a little confused

T I'm still getting a little peat smoke, lots of ju-jubes and caramels, sake yeast, a hint of booze but for 13.5% its well concealed, everything I smells still there in one form or another, some wet wood and I want to say its vinous but that's not quite it, good flavors but a little confusing

M syrupy, bubbles are there but don't do a whole lot, oily on the palate, a little heat but less then expected, wet wood and bruised dark fruit on the finish

O something different that's for sure, hops needed for 100IBU's have faded and its more sweet then bitter, strange in many ways but something worth trying

I finished the beer before I figured it out, strange, different and extremely expensive, I doubt I'll be stocking up but the original experience was worth the single purchase (1,385 characters)

Fermented by Masumi sake yeast #7.
Looks like murky liquid shit. No head. Just a ring of extinguished blebs. Sediment in the bottom. Smell is good and intense - candy sugar, dark fruits, toffee, dried fruits and red berries.
Taste is rather sweet & heavenly, what a complexity and character. Endless fruits, berry fountains, honey tones, excellent drinkability.
One of the best beer of over 1700, that I've drunk. (413 characters)
