A: DEEP ruby red. 1 1/2 fingers of head that keeps and you can see all the tiny bubbles making its composition. Head is also a light brown colour.

S: Roasty smell with a slight fishy smell?!? Just can't put my finger on it as just a moment ago I thought it could be a slight detergent smell.

T: Roastiness is borderline "burned pot" in flavour. There are hints of dark chocolate and a slight hazelnut in the background. There is residual sweetness with an average -1 bitterness.

M: A bit too carbonated for my taste but it is within the profile. Seems a bit thin and watery.

O: I've enjoyed many Picaroons products but this one is not on my top list. It's ok but there are other porters I'd choose first. It's a must try though.

Large, rocky beige head. A cross between blanket and web-like lace. Dark brown color where bright light can pass...barely. It doesn't seem cloudy.

Powdered cocoa predominates the smell. There's a bit of chalk to the nose as well.

The taste leans toward dark chocolate, but there's a sourness that is similar to unripened stone fruit. The body is thin for a porter--the carbonation is high. The swallow features a small level of hop bitterness.

have had a few times in the past...

pours a pitch dark colour with an inch of beige head.

roasted coffee smell with some chocolate aromas - pretty good.

taste has some malt and roasted coffee beans but is a bit thin and has a weird cola flavour to it.

overall it was okay but kind of odd tasting for an american porter.

Picaroons Mans Best Friend
Batch #1346

Style: English Porter

A - Black, very dark, shows ruby red when you shine a flashlight through it. Thick foamy Caramel-Tan Head that sticks around, good amount of lacing.

S - Lots of Roasted Malts, Chocolate, Caramel, Coffee, smells absolutely delicious.

T - Espresso taste is dominant, roasty flavour, hints of chocolate and caramel, finishing off with a dry hoppy bitterness.

M - Not too thick or creamy, bordering on watery but not quite. Carbonation is good. Easy to drink.

D - This beer is awesome, it's right up there in my books with Fullers London Porter. This beer is a very solid attempt for a local craft brew to make a fantastic Porter and it works very well. I can't say enough about how good this beer is, and it's one of my all time favourites.

Rating - 4.5/5 (A)

Poured from a 500ml bottle. A thick, heavy brown with almost no transparency. Very slight light gets through around the base of the glass. Small creamy tan head left little behind. Aroma of sweet roasted malts. Really big flavor of malts and espresso. It is a thinner, lighter beer for a porter. Not heavy to consume and you can tell it is only 5%. Another good brew from Picaroons.

A - Pours black but not opaque as some red hints show up around the edges when held up to the light. Started with a pillowy/creamy head of 2 fingers but is going down fairly quick. Head is composed of very large bubbles and hangs around at about one finger. Nice looking.

S - Very odd aroma. Chocolate is there. Something very different is present and sort of offputting. Sort of smells like a combination of leather and my cat's litter box.

T - Same thing as the aroma. How very odd. A sort of sourness is present in the aftertaste. There are very mild coffee notes but mostly that odd leathery unpleasantness comes through.

M - Light body. Good amount of carbonation.

D - If I could handle the awful flavour of this I could have tons. I'm not sure where this went wrong but I don't like it.
