22 oz. bomber poured into the larger version of the Sam Adams perfect pint glass. Beer comes out dark brown with some deep mahogany highlights on the sides and wherever the liquid gets a little shallow. Dark tan head that is CRAZY big and frothy, felt like I was pouring a classy Belgian style at room temperature. The head on this refuses to quit and stick around the entire session and longer, it actually outlasts the liquid. I love where this is going.

Ok, smell was a little bit underwhelming, but not bad. Not as big and bad as I expected based on the color and look of the beer. Still it's above average for the style. There's some nice grainy notes with small hints of weak coffee and chocolate. At the end there's some feint citrus hop notes. Decent balance overall, just nothing too strong.

Taste is on par with the smell, a slight increase. Again some dark burned grains with subtle coffee and some semi-sweet chocolate. There's a nice lingering bitter citrus and gentle pine finish at the end from the hops. Really like the taste of this, it's a good shelf stout that can be consumed on a regular basis if stouts are your style.

Mouthfeel is really good. It's full bodied, the taste lingers for about 20 seconds after each sip so you can really notice every flavor all together. Great smoothness and well balanced. Starts smooth and has a reasonably dry bitter finish. I like how drinkable it is, but I think this is more of a beer that belongs in a 6 pack than a bomber unless you're sharing; I was ready for something else about 16oz's or so into it. Good overall though, really glad to have tried it, just wish I shared it now.

Thanks Paschal for the trade!

Best before July 2011

A) Pours medium brown; settles near black. One finger head thins rapidly until it hits a thin, bubbly layer. Solid trails of lace turn into a wall of lace.

S) Aromas of toffee, peanuts, roasted chocolate and earth. Not much in the way of coffee. Modest roast notes. The aroma is tame but pleasant, become more so as it warms.

T) Moderate earthy bitterness. Bitter coffee and roasted grains. Not much in the way of chocolate. Some tangy roast. Tastes simple and straightforward. Enjoyable enough.

M) Medium body. Carbonation is high and distracting. Super dry with an earthy, roasty finish.

D) Tastes pretty good. Easily drinkable aside from the carbonation.

12 oz bottle, BB dated Oct. 2013, poured dark brown, nearly black, with a light brown head. Moderate retention; superior lacing.

Smells surprisingly hoppy for style. Moderately strong. Medium chocolate too.

A clear hop presence in the flavor too, but this is dominated by dark roasted grains with a touch of char and dark chocolate. More than a hint of char in the finish, with dark roasted and burnt grains, a touch of hops and black coffee lingering on and on in the aftertaste. Near equal sweet/bitter balance until the mildly bitter finishl.

Medium-full body; very good carbonation level; smooth; dry finish.

O: a nice stout, but with a bit too much burnt grain flavor.

on cask at steel string brewery in carrboro.

this version was infused with centennial hops.

pours a dark brown with a beautiful beige head. slight cocoa on the nose as well as hops. taste is extremely pleasant. tad of chocolate and cocoa with a good mixture of hops, but without the bitterness of an IPA. lighter side of medium bodied with light carbonation. but, this actually improves the drinkablity.

overall surprisingly excellent. I could drink a lot of this.

A: The beer is very dark amber in color (black when viewed from afar). It poured with a quarter finger high tan head that died down, leaving some lacing on the surface and a collar around the edge of the glass.
S: Moderate aromas of dark and chocolaty malts are present in the nose.
T: Like the smell, the taste has flavors of dark and chocolate malts along with hints of chicory and a slight amount of bitterness. The chicory becomes stronger as the beer warms up.
M: It feels medium-bodied and a little thin on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: The light-bodied nature of this beer and its low alcohol content makes it very easy to drink. It is quite flavorful.

Nice black features with dark brown edges, there was a large bubbly and lively head.

The scent is exceptionally weak but there are dry chocolate notes and lactose-sweetness.

Strong carbonated tastes and feel there's a wateriness that fills the mouth. Dry Graham cracker, dry chocolate and a plastic milkiness exist but get lost in the water.

I brought this to a bottle share and walked away embarrassed.
