22oz brown bomber with a freshness date.

LOOK: Clear brassy glow, ample lacing.

SMELL: Toasted bread, baked apple, herbal hop, fresh hay, clean.

TASTE: Clean, crisp, malty, toasted grain, bread crust, dry, grassy, herbal, spicy hop, hint of yeast.

From first sip this beer is on the right track but further through this bomber I realized how honed in on the style it actually is. Simply, Olde Hickory nailed it to style.

A: Pours a crystal clear amber in color (very similar to one of the colors you see in the fall foliage) with light amounts of active visible carbonation rising from the bottom of the glass and some faint golden yellow highlights. The beer has a two finger tall dense foamy beige head that slowly reduces to a very thick film covering the entire surface of the beer with a medium sized finger thick cap in the center and a thick ring at the edges of the glass. Significant amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Moderate to strong aromas of toasted bready malts with toffee and caramel sweetness. There is a light presence of floral hops and just a touch of light fruits (grape).

T: Upfront there is a moderate to strong flavor of toasted bready malts with some light notes of toffee + caramel sweetness. That is followed by a light to moderate flavor of floral hops with a light amount of bitterness which lingers for a moderate amount of time.

M: Medium bodied with just shy of moderate amounts of carbonation. Initially slightly syrupy with just a hint of dryness in the finish.

O: This is a really nice example of the style from an American brewery and you really can't beat it for the price ($3.00 for a 22 oz. bottle). The alcohol is reasonably well hidden in this beer and it is quite enjoyable. Definitely would recommend picking this one up if you see it.

22 oz bomber poured into an imperial nonic pint glass

A: Bright copper orange with moderate clarity, head is very light and loose, does not last very long

S: Has a light grassy hop smell, malt is somewhat subdued, light toffee background that improves as it warms

T: Pretty plain, again hops dominate but aren't "strong", earthy and grassy, pretty good German hop flavor, I'd like a bit more malt for the style but pretty good

M: Got this right, slightly dry, light enough to drink, heavy enough to not feel light

O: A good beer especially for the price!

on tap at beer study in chapel hill

dark copper with a tad reddish hue. appropriate head. smell is crisp and malty. you can tell this will be refreshing. the taste is big on malts, bready, yeasty. I'm a big fan of this style and this is very true. medium bodied, medium carbonation.

overall a surprisingly excellent oktoberfest beer. thoroughly recommended.

picked this up when visiting family in NC about a month ago...notched as best by january 2013...bottoms up! enjoyed from a duck rabbit snifter.

a - brew poured a watery transparent amberish with a thin head that was gone almost as quick as the beer was poured. hardly a ring of bubbles was left on the surface of the beer.

s - smells nice. big grape. some nutmeg and crystalized malts. big sweetness.

t - much like the nose, but a bit of booziness on the backend. grapes and nuts. all malts. lots of grain. fairly bready and crisp. toasted.

m - a bit boozy, but other than that, fairly classic.

o - overall a nice take on the style. on the sweet side of things, but good. not my favorite marzen, but solid.
