Pours a clear golden/orange into a tulip. Slight white head goes away relatively quickly. Nice lacing and sense od carbonation. Looks the part of a good west coast IPA.
Smell is not overpowering but still there. Citrus and juicy hops all the way. Not overly floral but still pleasant.
A nice hop bite upfront in the taste, gives way to pleasant (but not overtly strong) citrus and a nice , non-astringent, bitter finish. No particular sweetness to note. Alcohol is pretty muted for me.
Mouthfeel is very crisp, which is generally speaking what I like in my IPA's. For as hoppy as it is, it doesn't feel particularly sticky or resiny. Feels about as "full" as it should given the abv and style.
West coast IPAs have become one of my favorite styles over the years, and reviewing this as that style of IPA, it doesn't quite belong in the upper tier (just outstanding, pliny the elder, anything by alpine) but it is still very good, and for the state of NC it's about as good as its get for hop forward ipa. If this were regularly available on draft, i would seek it out.... same deal if it were available in 6 packs. For the time being I can only get it in bombers, and for me its just not quite good enough to justify constant purchases at that price point. But by all means if you are a big IPA fan give this one a chance.

Had on-tap at Barleycorn Asheville. Served in a pint glass.
A- Pours a medium amber color with a 1/2 inch off-white head that retains decently before becoming a thick ring around the edge of the glass and a full sheet of surface foam. Resilient, randomly patterned lacing.
S- Big juicy hop aroma that's musty and dank. Slightly sweet smelling.
T- The hop flavor is decidedly grassy and not very in-your-face but the bitterness is definitely there and lingers a good while. Decent malt backbone to balance that's a bit bready and sweet. The ABV isn't incredibly noticeable.
M- Pretty sharp and dry with medium carbonation and a body leaning toward the fuller side.
O- I wouldn't necessarily call this a "death by hops" beer but it's certainly assertive and the malt provides a near-perfect balance to the aggressive hop content.

Best by date of August 2014
A: Golden crystal clear honey hue with 1 finger of thick creamy head. The head lasts a good while and leaves good lacing down the glass.
S: Strong aroma of floral hops with a lot of malt sweetness. The aroma is more bitter than the taste of this one. Hints of honey, caramel and mango in there.
T: Nice mango fruity hop flavor that finishes with a clean vanilla/caramel finish. Hops dominate the palate up front with the mango sweetness and piney finish but are not overly bitter or punchy. More balanced ipa with the malt sweetness combined with the mango sweet flavor in the hops leave you with more of a sweet balanced ipa more than an overly bitter flavor.
M: Medium to thin mouthfeel, nice carbonation to finish the beer off with a slightly sweet aftertaste.
O: Nice balanced version of a west coast style ipa.Good solid beer, but I was expecting more of punchy up front hop flavor and aroma with a name like Death by Hops. I thought the hop blend was good giving it a slightly sweet flavor and good malt profile to balance out the total flavor. Overall good beer but the name left me wanting more of a hop bitter punch.
