On tap it was more carbonated when I had it at TJs in Carrboro.

Pours a thick pitch black, almost forceful effort needed to leave the bottle. No head and no carbonation. ill come back and add cellaring reviews as needed.

Smells of honey and bourbon, and dry grains. None of the initial stout smells are there, probably taken over by the barrel aging flavors.

Tastes like it smells. Honey is the biggest flavor here. It kind of takes over, and I like it. Vanilla is there that compliments the bourbon smoothness. And yes its as good as it sounds. Hyped up and deserving. A spicy oaky wood just runs all over.

**UPDATE**
Same keg, 45 days later. I get more barrel, but more specifically it feels like honey bourbon barrels. Very slick and smooth. Still highly rated. Cant wait to try with dakkon54 and the rest of the guys at Parrothead pub in April!

Had this today at the Olde Hickory Tap Room down town...

Pour black & oily with a modicum of tan head. Minimal head retention & some sticky lacing

Nice Bourbon notes, some cheyy, oak & vanilla

Dark chocolate, Bourbon, & oakyness up front. A touch of dryness gives way to a bit of earthy coffee & molasess with nice vnnilla swwetness. Finishes dry, smooth & soothing, not perfect, but a damn good take on the stylr

MF: Chewy,sooth & warming

Drank very easy for the style. This brewery has really progessed in the last few-3 years, well done OHB. You've done this ex-Hickory, NC resident proud!

Pours about as black as any beer i've ever had. Looks a little thin in the pour. Slight brown head that goes away pretty quickly. Strong lacing, a nice looking beer.

Smell is bourbon upfront followed by nice roasted notes and dark chocolate. A pleasant smell though the bourbon dominates a little.

Taste is very in line with the smell only with a little bit of a dark fruit element as well. Bourbon taste is really well blended and doesn't drink hot as all.

Mouthfeel is a little thin. Not totally off, but i think a little thicker mouthfeel would do wonders for this beer.

Overall this is a really enjoyably beer and highly drinkable for the style. Locally, i'd rate it a slight notch below BA Sexy Chocolate, a slight notch above ORF, and a good step above Igor and Silent Night. Get this one if you can.

Thanks to Roger over at Bestway for giving me one of his personal stash, this is one f*cking amazing beer!Poured into a snifter ink black no light getting thru this beer,a thin deep mocha colored head atop.Where to start when it come to the aromas, chocolate fudge, roasted walnut, coffee roast, just lush and rich,to me perfection.Thick and chewey feel but also creamy.Oaky/bourbon flavors mixed with sweetish chocolate and deep roast, its just as rich as all get out. This is one NC. beer worth its high rating, damn I wish I would have been able to get over there to get more, hell yeah!

2010 bottle thanks to lanamj.
22oz bottle poured into a Bruery Tulip glass.

A - Pours a very dark brown with only a few dark brown bubbles forming around the edges.

S - Strong bourbon hits me first, then some nice chocolate and oak.

T - The strong chocolate hits me hard here, then some anise, slight bitter coffee, and a nice bourbon finish.

D - A ver smooth drinker, but a slight bitter after-taste.

O - Great. A bourbon and chocolate delight. Who could complain about that.

2011 Bottle served in a Brasserie D'Achouffe tulip.

A- Pores a nice thick black color with minimal mocha colored head that resides to a perfect lace with good retention. A perfect looking stout!!

S- As I pore it i can automatically begin to smell the chocolate!! Rich malts and chocolate dominates the nose followed by beautiful bourbon, vanilla and oak aromas as well. I could smell this one all day, yankee candle needs to makes the sent happen!!! It is a perfectly balanced nose, couldn't be better IMO.

T- More bourbon then the nose. In fact i feel the flavors are reverse then the nose. The bourbon, oak and vanilla are up front, as is the honey. And the chocolate resides in the end. The chocolate lingers well. A perfect tasting stout.

M- Nice and smooth. Very silky and creamy. Carbonation is perfect for a barrel aged stout. This again can not get much better!!

O- I felt last years Event was as good as it gets... I was wrong, it's this years!! What a great beer, not as sweet and more smooth chocolate flavors. I also feel what little tang was present from oxidation is not present this year. I love this beer and Im happy I live where I do.

2010 bomber into a Darkness glass. Thanks go out to the generous kingkong for sending this my way. Shared at a tasting.

A: Fully black body under a finger of incredibly dense, creamy brown head. Terrific retention and lacing. Gorgeous stout.

S: Big, sweet, and roasty. Chocolate, molasses, licorice, bourbon, vanilla, coconut, and just a hint of dark fruit. Complex and lovely.

T: Roasty up front, with dark chocolate dominating while coffee and molasses swirl underneath; some bourbon and vanilla nuances show up midway through, but the base stout's malt and roast are always more noticeable than the barrel. The finish is a little odd, combining vanilla with surprising dryness from the roastiness. Absolutely spectacular overall: not overwhelming in any way, and drinkable throughout. Terrific stout.

M: Medium-to-full body with lots of creamy froth. A little over the top carbonation-wise, but extremely enjoyable nonetheless.

O: I flirted with giving this one a perfect score for flavor, but shied away in the end - only because its impeccable balance made me feel like something was ever-so-slightly missing. I could have dealt with just a big more bourbon presence, and look forward to trying a fresh bottle of the 2011 vintage to see if the barrel is more prominent right out of the gate. Terrific beer, and entirely worthy of its high scores - if not some of the outsized trades it was demanding a while back. Huge thanks, again, to kingkong for generously making this one possible.

Cheers!

EDIT:

I was fortunate enough to try the new 2011 version of this (also thanks to kingkong's remarkable generosity), and it was every bit as delicious. I can't believe how much flavor they pack into such a moderate ABV. Terrific beer.
