Thanks to my cousin Sonny for sharing this over a long weekend of beer tasting. Fully reviewed Sunday to E-mail notes.
A- Poured to four glasses from the bomber with a midnight black body. Light mocha brown head forms to about a finger with decent retention. Head descends to a frothy ring at the edges. Tons of legs lead to spotty lacing.
S- Raspberry nectar at an impressive strength. The fruit is definitely the star but a rich chocolate, dark roasty malt base comes through just enough to make you realize this is not a straight fruit beer. Fruity baked goods.
T- Damn, Olde Hickory... the raspberry comes through from the nose in a fashion I can't quite say that I have ever found in another beer. Fresh, authentic fruit feel dominates the flavor early on but the base stout opens up after a few sips. Decadent chocolate malts, dark roast grains, sweetness and nuttiness. Oak wood feel but no whiskey for me.
MF- Thick body with a creamy and slightly silky texture. Carbonation is at a medium level. No alcohol warmth present and semi-tart raspberry lingers with some roast bitterness.
Not sure I have ever found a beer with raspberry flavor quite like this. Each sip reveals waves of flavor that oscillates between straight fresh raspberry and rich chocolate truffle. The barrels don't really do much for me but insane raspberry takes the cake.

Note: 2013 Vintage
A: Pours an opaque yet clear jet black in color with light gentle carbonation along the edges of the glass and the faintest hint of very dark brown highlights. The beer has a quarter finger tall foamy dark mocha head that reduces to a large patch of very thin film and a thin ring at the edges of the glass. Light to moderate amounts of lacing are observed.
S: Moderate to strong aromas of rich dark chocolate and raspberries with light notes of honey, bourbon, and oak.
T: Upfront there is a strong flavor of rich dark chocolate with a light amount of roasted malts with a hint of honey sweetness. That is followed by moderate to strong flavors of raspberries - very natural raspberry flavors with some tartness and some sweetness. Light amounts of bourbon, vanilla, and oak towards the finish. Light to moderate amounts of lingering bitterness.
M: Slightly heavier than medium bodied with light to moderate amounts of carbonation. Slightly thin for the style.
O: I had this beer on Valentine's Day and the smell reminds me of really great handmade chocolates (thinking raspberry truffle). I really enjoyed this beer and it was well worth the wait - it was saved for a special occasion after I picked it up in the autumn. Easy to drink with very well hidden ABV.
