A: Poured big, smooth with lots of viscosity. A nice big, brown cap sits atop after the pour, good head retention leaves nice lacing on the glass after a few sips

S: Some dark chocolate smothered in raspberries, perhaps to much as I felt the raspberries were a little backseat, big and heavy roast, coffee with some good ol' molasses

T: It starts out very sweet, like wow sweet, that honey and chocolate gets after your taste buds, lots of chocolate and a big burnt or even char like barley note. The bourbon and booze is right upfront but fades and re-appears on finish. A bit of molasses, perhaps anise underneath, The raspberries are right upfront but sordove settled down afterwards, very mellow to me. The finish on this beer is sweet, sticky, lots of char and chocolate

M: Definitely full bodied, well carbonated, decadent, very sweet, lots of residual sugar I feel. The raspberries give way to that big hearty base

O: Very, very good! I love Olde Hickory stouts for their big body and full, robust flavors and feel. This is no exception and no letdown.

650 mL bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Inky black. Stains the glass nicely. Not much going of a head, but the blackness is enough to forgive that. Very thin khaki collar.

Smell - Raspberry and dark chocolate, pushing coffee aroma. Oak is strong. The raspberry is a nice aroma. Not really fresh, but not artificial either.

Taste - Sweet up front with some honey. Dark chocolate. Raspberry fruit flavor lends a bit of tartness. Buckets of oak in this, which cuts some of the sweetness.

Mouthfeel - Medium low carbonation. Not too viscous. A little boozy.

Overall - The fruit is incorporated very well. The oak cuts the sweetness and keeps this manageable.

Thanks to Sam for this one. 2012 vintage. 22oz waxed and capped bomber into a Brooklyn Brewery pint. Shared with schen9303.

Pours a frothy 2 finger dark mocha colored head with moderate retention. Beer is thick, viscous and pitch black. Lacing is stringy and sparse with little stick. Moderate legs. Pretty good.

Nose is chocolate, cocoa powder and raspberry puree in the back. Deep stout aromas with just a slightest hint of fruit. On point. Aromatic too.

Opens chocolate, fudge, salt, and raspberry pulp and seed. Boozy in the middle with a sweet molasses, honey, and syrup quality. Ends chocolate raspberry truffle. Finishes sweet with a sweet, dark red fruit and cocoa powder aftertaste. Great complexity and certainly unique... but not particularly good.

Full bodied with moderate carbonation. Oily with some sparse bubbles in the mouth and goes down warm and slightly boozy. Finishes messy with lingering aftertaste that coats the mouth. Pretty good but the bubbles make this one a touch thin.

After all I've heard about this beer, I'm honestly a bit disappointed. The raspberry presence turns out to be a bit too salty and the ample carbonation present in this one makes it a touch thin in the mouth... which is a killer for the style. This is definitely worth trying because its got some unique things going on. But its not one I'd go out of my way to revisit.

From 08/03/13 notes. 22 oz. bottle poured into a snifter.

a - Pours a deep brown, almost black color, with one to two inches of dark tan head and low carbonation evident. Looks really nice.

s - Smells of roasted malts, milk chocolate, honey, sweet dark fruits, dark chocolate, toasted malts, some oak, and burnt malts. Nice sweet nose, with good chocolate and fruits coming through.

t - Tastes of roasted malts, milk chocolate, raspberries, cherries, sweet dark fruity malts, dark chocolate, toasted malts, earthy malts, burnt notes. Nice mix of sweet and dark chocolate, and a little more raspberry and dark fruit here. Very good.

m - Medium to full body and low carbonation. Body is thick and smooth, with no heat. Awesome mouthfeel.

o - Overall I liked this stout a lot; it's a really good example of a non-bourbon big stout. The dark fruits come through really well and add a lot to the sweet and dark chocolate already there. No heat and easy to drink, would love to have it again. Personally I like Event Horizon a little better, but this is great.
