A - Pours black with no head at all. Barely a ring of bubbles around the top. Some carbonation stubbornly clinging to the glass.

S - Raspberry dark chocolate. Fresh raspberries. Smells like dessert.

T - Follows the nose, with hints of bourbon and booze as well. Mostly well balanced with a very tart finish.

M - Medium-full body with light carbonation. Very pleasant.

O - This is too tart for my taste. I would love to try one of these with some age on it. The fresh raspberries really stand out.

Blue waxed 2013 vintage 22oz bottle poured into a CBS oversized snifter.

A - Pours an opaque black color with a thin 1/2 finger of dark brown fizzy head that falls almost immediately and leaves behind a thick foamy collar and faint traces of lacing on the glass.

S - A bit of paint thinner up front, followed up by much more desirable raspberries. Buttery caramel, fudgy chocolate, bitter chocolate.

T - Very firm raspberry up front, bright with fruitiness and a tart fruit character as well. Bitter bakers chocolate, dry cocoa-like flavor, chocolate fudge, honey, smokey, some tobacco, a touch of char. Raspberry is way up front in the flavor profile and pushes everything else into the background.

M - Medium body, perhaps a bit light for the style. Carbonation is appropriately low/mid level giving only a mild tingle. Very fruity with some tartness and a host of chocolate varieties in the background.

O - Far more raspberry forward than I expected...maybe just past the ideal amount for me. I love raspberries, but this overshadows the rest of the flavors a bit too much. I think a blend with more chocolate/less fruit would be ideal. Fairly dessert like in character...nice NFL playoff weekend sipper.

2013 vintage courtesy of LGB362.

A: Vigorous pour into a snifter. Pours jet black with no head. This surprises me based on other reviews.

S: Winner here. Nice raspberry and chocolate aroma coming through.

T: Good, not great. You get the sweetness of the berries and chocolate, but I also get a heavy char. Char mellows when warming, but still there. This may be just me, but I get a heavy dose of the honey when I burp.

M: About average. Let down by the lack of carbonation. Figured this would be the case with the lack of a head.

O: Very good, but not what I was expecting.

This beer is pretty legendary in these parts, but I still feel it is somewhat lesser known outside of North Carolina. Poured from a 2013 black wax bomber at 50F into an Olde Hickory mini-Pokal.

A: Heavy black wax with a cool vintage stamp this year. Poured the darkest black mahogany with a finger of very thick chocolate color head. Subsequent warmer pours gave a bit more head. Good looking for sure.

N: The nose on this beer when fresh is really amazing. You get loads of fresh raspberries, literally like they are just being smashed in the basket after picking them. You also smell the honey, along with Chocolate notes and a bit of the barrel character.

T: This beer has an amazing flavor profile which I would describe as a dark chocolate raspberry truffle. The fruit is still young and very up front on this one, one of the dominant flavors for sure. Chambord and dark baker's chocolate fill your mouth with each sip. The roast malts are somewhat subdued and overshadowed by sweetness from the berries and the honey. As it warms, the bourbon barrel character emerges a little more strongly. I wouldn't say this 10% beer is boozy but it is still a tad hot to me. I think as it ages the flavors will balance out even more subtly. Some purists might find this beer a bit sweet for an Imperial Stout, fruit and honey take the place of coffee and roast you would commonly find in some other stouts. Very unique combo though.

MF: Lovely, slick and thick. Not chewy but definitely on the heavy side of medium. Goes down very easy and coats the mouth so well.

O: I think the 2013 vintage is excellent and lives up to the heritage of this beer. Right now it's amazing, but a little fruit forward and a bit warm; I imagine one year from now and beyond it will be exceptional. Definitely a beer to seek out if you like this fruit infused Imperial Stout style. I've got a few in the cellar and looking forward to some verticals over the coming years.
