Once, not too long ago, Portsmouth was hard drinking seaport city. Then came the yuppies, and most places went "foo-foo". Not the State Street Saloon. One of the last places in the city in-town where you will see people inbibing in the morning hours. Not a place to go to meet the opposite sex, or for the food, which is just standard. This is a place to grab a stool and get down to the business of drinking. Selection is average, because the typical patron is just interested in something cheap on draft. What makes this place special, in my eyes, is you could bring your dad or grandad here and feel like time stopped in 1973. A good place to have a beer and remember when Shlitz was the best selling beer in America.

This was the last of three stops on a recent Friday night. There is a huge island bar and a dozen or so TVs. Our primary reason for stopping in was to watch some of the Celtic's game.

The bartender greeted us promptly. The selection was poor. The standard stuff and Smuttynose IPA (my choice). My wife had a Black & Tan. It always bugs me when a bar charges more for a B&T than for a regular draft. Is there that much more labor involved?

The crowd was definately local and most patrons seemed to know each other. I had a Sam's Winter Ale to balance the hoppy IPA and we headed out. The bartender thanked us for stopping in and the way he said it implied that they don't get many tourists.

Good place for sports on TV, but not much more to offer.
