Pours out a rich orange brown and sits a deep, burnt cherrywood in the glass with a good sized tan head, fading to a light skim, hugging the sides of the glass leaving a few stray lacings here and there.

Smells rich and malty, big toasty character. Roasted oak chips and vanilla bean come through. Caramel and dark toffee add a light sugary presence. Faint note of hops adds an earthy aroma of fresh fallen leaves.

Tastes mildly sweet up front, light malt presence. Hop bitterness ensues with a fairly large load of bitteing hops leaving a muddy trail of grass and brown leaves. Meager hints of apples, a few light fruity esters. Just the slightest touch of prunes. Finish is well bittered with a good roasted malt character.

Fairly light and chalky in the mouth, adequate carbonation. Just a bit watery feeling to me, still at about a medium body.

Not a bad alt bier at all. Well built hop character and a nice dose of malts to boot. A bit weird in the mouth, but a nice beer either way.

I am not sure what the difference is between Pioneer Brewing Co. and BluCreek. There is no mention of Pioneer anywhere on the bottle or the website, but it is brewed at the exact same location.

Deep burgundy bodied with a compacted, sandy tan head.
Nose full of chocolate and nutty hues. Very nice, but not necessarily to style.
Taste falls closer to a english style brown ale (or nut brown for the matter). I was slightly dismayed because I was really hoping for a true alt...luckily this is pretty damn good anyway.
Light, powdery chocolate and hazelnut tones hit the tongue right away. Fruity notes struggle for recognition. Ever so slight prune. A butterscotch flavor enters late, just prior to the entrance of the unintrusive and, somewhat passive hops. Nothing about this seems very German.
Fairly robust in the mouth with ample steady carbonation.
I gave this a lot of leeway, as it is a fine beverage..just not as labeled.

p.s. The quality on this one is all over the map. I've had this on multiple occasions and it's never tasted the same twice. At best it's rather pleasant. At worst it's a pretty big mess.

This beer had a small sized tan head that contained medium sized bubbles that mostly diminished. The body was carbonated with a reddish-brown hue. The nose consisted of malt, alcohol, chocolate and caramel. The flavor was sweet and hoppy. The palate was smooth, thin and light bodied. This beer left a good amount of lacing on the sides of my glass.

This beer poured a dark red/medium brown color with a good sized head. This was one rather simple beer. Not complex in the least but very drinkable and very balanced nonetheless. No overpowering flavor. A slight roasty malt is in the front with slight earthy hops in the finish. A good body and good carbonation helps this beer be slightly above average.

My first altbier. This thing poured a lackluster 1/4 inch head, with not much smell, either pleasing or not. The first thing I noticed was a nice lightly toasted malt flavor. And the next thing I taste is apples. I don't know if they used some wierd yeast, or what did it. But this stuff had an apple taste.
I didn't really know what to expect with this beer. It basically just reminded me of a mild brown ale. Very drinkable/sessionable. But nothing to write a book about. I'll have to try some more altbiers to see how this one holds up.

Great looking deep copper-red with a full tan head that receded to a thin layer with great lacing. Aroma is sweet and toasty malty with a slightly woody note and a touch of alcohol. Taste? Its a brown ale. I had a nice one from King Brewing recently. Taste was pretty much interchangeable. Mouthfeel was a bit on the light side and drinkability was fairly good. Not very impressive, but innofensive and quaffable.

Dark, deep garnet. Head is creamy, thin and beige. Aroma is of dirty laundry and sewage pipes. Taste is skunky, cooked vegies and astringently bitter. Tannin like. Not pleasant. Stale tasting. Some malt tones come through, but this is not a good beer. It will likely end up in the sewage pipes.

Thanks to cokes for the sample. I'm always on the look out for new alts to try. Unfortunately, this is one of the worst.

Pioneer/BluCreek/Wisconsin Brewing is really hit and miss with their beers. Some are ok. Some are horrid. I can think of at least 10 other Wisconsin breweries off the top of my head I'd rather spend my money on.
