T: Seems about right for a Barleywine. Little head, sits still in the glass with not much lacing. Blacky red and then bronze when held up to light. 4

S: ok, really smells like this beer is brewed using coffee. I get the sort of faecal funk I got from other coffee beers such as Peche Mortel and Long Shot. It could also be described as chocolatey/caroby. Also reminds me a bit of Korbinian's date flavours. There's some definite quad-dy dark fruit notes also. 4

T: Ok, the sweetness/hoppiness (bitterness) and alcohol in this beer are pretty well integrated. You get some of all three but they really balance each other out effectively. There's also some roast. Also some Belgian estery/alcoholic notes later on. 4

M: Pretty good, syrupy. 4

D: Not bad at all for the style. Only thing stopping this from getting an A grade is that it gets a bit sweeter the more I get into the bottle, and the flavours aren't personal favourites of mine, although they are nice. Definitely a one and done beer for me. 4

My bottle was 7.2% alcohol.

A clear and dark ruby-brown color, the beer has a foamy tan head and low carbonation. The aroma has some pale malt, a little toffee and bread crust, and ,ore than a little bubble-gum and rubber band scent. Not boozy, but the alcohol is detectable. The taste is semi sweet and very, very malty....toast and nuts and nutmets. An interesting flavor. Full in body. This isn't my style of barley wine, and tha aroma is a bit odd, but the beer grows on you, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Poured into a tulip glass, 7.2% (Best Before dated: Oct 14)

Nice almost opaque, dark ruby colour, small coffee tan head that dissipated to a thin layer with slightly sticky spotty rings. Aromas of sweet malt, dark fruits; slight spice and alcohol comes through. There's more of the same in the taste, balanced roasted malts, mollases, and some hop bitterness/spice. The alcohol isn't that present but is just slightly warming. It's smooth with low carbonation and a medium body.

This is my first barleywine and as they seem to usually be higher in abv, I'd be led to think this beer is losing something in that, this tasted somewhat like a dubbel to me.

330ml bottle poured into tulip 4/2/13 2011 vintage

A clear light cola with a tornado of bubbles feeding a long lasting two finger tan head, a few rings of lace and still some foam at the bottom of the glass, looks great

S dark bread and burnt brown sugar, rum raisin and christmas cake, a little wood and booze mix with some earthy notes and anise

T some nutty toffees added to the mix, spice, bread and brown sugar, I didn't really know what to expect but this ones working well for me, nice mix of spicy sugars

M silky as it enters and enough bubbles to give it some life, a little grit on the gums and slightly sticky on the lips, aftertaste of earthy notes lingers

O solid beer from start to finish, no real flaws and no complaints, easy to drink and it has a fair bit going on

Winter Warmer, English BW or call it an English Strong ale if you want, no matter how you brand this one its pretty nice to drink on this chilly Winter night

A: Pours an opaque black/brown colour. Medium beige head that slowly settles leaving a small amount of lacing.

S: Dark fruit, toasted malt.

T: Delicious malty marmite taste, raisins - alcohol is barely present. Nutty aftertaste creeps up unexpectedly, lingering for some time.

M: Fairly thick with low carbonation - very warming.

Enjoyed this a lot - reminded me somehow of a less carbonated Skullsplitter, though with rather less complexity. Would definitely drink again!

330ml bottle, 7.2% ABV, 2011 vintage.

This beer pours a clear, dark brownish amber hue, with a thin cap of wispy off-white head, which leaves some mitachondrial lace around the glass as it quickly evaporates.

It smells of lightly roasted caramel malt, treacle, toffee, some bready sourdough, and musty, earthy hops. The taste is toffee/caramel malt, rum-soaked raisins, a bit of wet brown bread, some zesty dark fruit, a soft dusty, leafy hoppiness, and some weakly acrid booze, which strangely does not warm.

The carbonation is rather inert and placid, the body a decent medium-heavy weight, and generally smooth, with a few prickly burrs, of indeterminate origin. It finishes a fair bit sweet, but in a tempered manner, the fruitiness and booze contributing only so much before petering out, leaving the rest to that murky mustiness that soon envelops.

An agreeable enough old world barleywine - all subtly, fruit, and dank cellars. It works well for this early onslaught of winter, at least until this one's descendents start popping up.

330ml bottle purchased from Slowbeer and poured into a Mikkeller goblet. 2009 version with the ABV listed as 7.20%.

Dark brown, almost black in appearance with the slightest of ruby hints. Beige/Tan head of foam at about 1cm or so that stays on as film for the duration.

Strong fruity aromas dominate, very intense and a strong hint of what is to come.

Big dark fruit flavours are the order of the day. A tiny bit of roasted malt came through at one stage to surprise. A real winter warmer, perfect for May in Australia.

Mouthfeel is a bit of a let-down relatively speaking, at times a little watery. At other times, pretty well true to style.

Overall a good decent brew, perhaps not living up to expectations and past experience of this very good British brewer.

Drank from my Duvel Tulip

A - Pours a Mohogany colour with a tanned head that reduces to a film very quickly

S - Some dark roasty toasty malts, with a small hint of a rubbber like aroma.

T - Very nice flavours of rum and raisins and very malty. A little molasses also present.

M - Medium to full body with minimal carbonation. Quite smooth and creamy.

O - A nice smooth BW with plenty to offer.

Pours dark brown with a small quickly fading head.
Nose shows loads of rich syrupy malt, plenty of caramel, golden syrup and treacle in there.
Similar rich malty flavours and oxidised character. A little alcohol mixes with a mild but sharp bitterness to counter the sweetness.
Nice creamy carbonation and slick body.
Good for sipping, very rich and sweet though.
