Something special for my 250th review.

A: Ruby black. Small but healthy off-white head.
S: Lots of liquorice and blackberries. Smokey (or is it toasty?) and slightly nutty. A touch of dandelion and burdock.
T: All the afforementioned qualities although smokier than I expected. Prickley ginger in there too. Pretty dry, especially for the strength. Earthy as it warms. Fruity aftertaste. Lovely velvety mouthfeel.
O: A decent winter warmer. Bonfire smokiness, ginger and liquorice.

Poured from a 330 ml bottle into an English pint glass. A rich reddish mahogany color with almost no head, just a smattering of beige bubbles against the sides of the glass. Has the richly malty, tangy aroma common to this brewery's other offerings, albeit darker and sweeter, a tad metallic and briny with a decent dose of floral and earthy English hops. Palate is dark and rich, raisins and dates, pretzels, molasses, dry nuts, and burnt toffee, with some brown spice (nutmeg?) and tangy hop flavors as well. The same metallic, briny tang from the nose comes through on the palate. Not as sweet as expected (think baker's molasses rather than brown sugar), well-balanced from a hops perspective. Perhaps I was expecting more complexity, such that the pronounced fruity notes one often gets in other barleywines are largely absent here. Fairly fizzy and of moderate body, almost like a brown ale in the latter regard. Alcohol is largely concealed. Finishes quite spicy and crisp, with a lingering dark malt nuttiness. Widely available in these parts and certainly worth trying, although I'd rank this below some other takes on the style.

A clear and dark ruby-brown color, the beer has a foamy tan head and low carbonation. The aroma has some pale malt, a little toffee and bread crust, and ,ore than a little bubble-gum and rubber band scent. Not boozy, but the alcohol is detectable. The taste is semi sweet and very, very malty....toast and nuts and nutmets. An interesting flavor. Full in body. This isn't my style of barley wine, and tha aroma is a bit odd, but the beer grows on you, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Poured into a tulip glass, 7.2% (Best Before dated: Oct 14)

Nice almost opaque, dark ruby colour, small coffee tan head that dissipated to a thin layer with slightly sticky spotty rings. Aromas of sweet malt, dark fruits; slight spice and alcohol comes through. There's more of the same in the taste, balanced roasted malts, mollases, and some hop bitterness/spice. The alcohol isn't that present but is just slightly warming. It's smooth with low carbonation and a medium body.

This is my first barleywine and as they seem to usually be higher in abv, I'd be led to think this beer is losing something in that, this tasted somewhat like a dubbel to me.

330ml bottle poured into tulip 4/2/13 2011 vintage

A clear light cola with a tornado of bubbles feeding a long lasting two finger tan head, a few rings of lace and still some foam at the bottom of the glass, looks great

S dark bread and burnt brown sugar, rum raisin and christmas cake, a little wood and booze mix with some earthy notes and anise

T some nutty toffees added to the mix, spice, bread and brown sugar, I didn't really know what to expect but this ones working well for me, nice mix of spicy sugars

M silky as it enters and enough bubbles to give it some life, a little grit on the gums and slightly sticky on the lips, aftertaste of earthy notes lingers

O solid beer from start to finish, no real flaws and no complaints, easy to drink and it has a fair bit going on

Winter Warmer, English BW or call it an English Strong ale if you want, no matter how you brand this one its pretty nice to drink on this chilly Winter night

A: Pours an opaque black/brown colour. Medium beige head that slowly settles leaving a small amount of lacing.

S: Dark fruit, toasted malt.

T: Delicious malty marmite taste, raisins - alcohol is barely present. Nutty aftertaste creeps up unexpectedly, lingering for some time.

M: Fairly thick with low carbonation - very warming.

Enjoyed this a lot - reminded me somehow of a less carbonated Skullsplitter, though with rather less complexity. Would definitely drink again!
