16.9 oz. bottle (Best before 26 Nov 04).

Clear mahogany body with nice off-white 1" head (when poured into 22 oz. glass), which dissipated fairly quickly.

Not much lacing but quite a bit of carbonation.

Pleasant, sweetish smell; lots of malt with a bit of caramel.

Quite drinkable--wish I'd had more than one bottle available--even on a warm June evening. Would likely be even more enjoyable in the spring or fall (or even winter).

I will definitely look for this one again.

Purchased at Dan Murphy's in Bateman's Bay, NSW, in January 2023 and drunk in September that year.

L: Dark mahogany, with an initially fluffy but ultimately thin covering cream-coloured head. No carbonation can be seen in the glass.

S: Creamy caramel malts, blackcurrant and raspberry. Tea Leaves. Minerality.

T: Dark fruits and fruit cake; dried, red fruits. Molasses and burnt sugar. Very moreish.

M: Mild and smooth, with minimal carbonation.

O: At last, an imported English ale in a brown bottle! With no cardboard and washed-out fruit cake of the clear-bottled imports, this is a very enjoyable, sessionable beer.

Cheers!

On-draught @ The Duke of Wellington, Dunedin, New Zealand. $14 NZD per pint.

Caramel, dark fruit (cherry, prune, grape), dark malts, chocolate malts, molasses, cola, herb (something from the anise/fennel/licorice family), herbal hops, black tea, prune, cinnamon.

Quite a complex strong ale at only 6.3% ABV, but it's balanced. Sweet but the herbal hop bitterness tempers it.

Smooth, a bit chewy, medium to full-bodied, well carbonated, wet, unrefreshing (true to style), a bit silky.

A well executed beer all around, with a pleasant dark fruit emphasis that rivals a Belgian dubbel in some respect. Drinkable to boot. One of the better English ales I've tried to date, even if it tends a bit sweet.

Poured from a can into a pint glass
Appearance – The beer is pours a deep copper color with a one finger head of off white foam. The head has a good level of retention, fading slowly over time to leave a small amount of lace on the sides of the glass.
Smell – The aroma of the brew is strong of a lightly toasted malt smell mixed with a rather decent showing of dark fruit smell of cherry and raisin. Along with these aromas comes notes of a caramel and molasses sweetness as well as a little bit of a cola smell.
Taste – The taste begins with a mix of a roasted malt and some molasses and caramel sweetness. Also upfront is a little bit of a dark fruit of cheery and plum. The fruit tastes fade slightly as the taste advances, being replaced by more roasted malt and some light herbal hop tastes. As the taste approaches the end, it bitters up a bit, taking on more herbal bitterness and a little bit of a cola and nut comes to the tongue, leaving one with a sweet, toasted, and slightly bittered taste to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel – The body of the brew is heavier and slightly more chewy with a carbonation level that is medium. For rich flavors, roasted malt, and fruit/sugar sweetness, the feel is rather appropriate and makes for a nice slower sipper.
Overall – A sweeter but rather drinkable strong ale. Certainly, fun to try!

Pours a deep, dark amber, mahogany coloration with a medium, creamy head. Smells of bready, caramel malt and dark fruits, with just a hint of estery spice. Taste is dominated by bready, caramel malt, strong notes of toffee, dark fruits: fig, raisin, dates and estery spice, with just a hint of chocolate and herbal hops. Finishes bittersweet, with some dark fruit and estery spice lingering in the aftertaste. Thick mouthfeel with a medium/rich body and medium carbonation.

A rich English Strong Ale that almost brings to mind a Belgian Dubbel with its strong caramel malt, dark fruit and estery spice notes, but also features some nice bitter, herbal hops for a good balance that prevents this from becoming quite too sweet. Incredibly rich depth of flavor and mouthfeel for the ABV.

S: Light & malty.
T: Rich, malty, toasted coffee flavours. Plums and dark fruits. Some sweetness, light bitterness.

O: Strong, moreish ESB. Tons of fruit. Hints at the alcohol without showing too much. All about the malt.

L In a late evening lamplit room it pours like a glass of cola. Very dark chestnut, pale tan head. Though in this case it is reducing very slowly
S [My nose is congested/'out of order'. I smell zero. I'll give this the benefit of the doubt and give it 3/5, something a beer of this pedigree should easily be worthy of]
T This is much gentler than '6.3%' suggests; I was expecting something of an assault. It's very ale-ish. Lower CO2, gentle, deep, more subtle flavours. I get some toasty/coffee into the end. It's one of the more tranquil beers of this ABV% I've had in a while.
F. Very easy going, nothing stands out; so they've got a nice balance here.
O. Nice. I'll have to come back to this when my congestion has gone, as I expect the smell/taste faculty would make this simpler to fully appreciate. Very promising though, from what I can tell.

Pour clear, amber in color with one inch head. Taste is prune, toffee, an toasted malt. Sweet, medium bodied and carbonation. Makes for a good malty treat that I will need to have more of.
