Hand-pump cask at the Apollo pub in Marylebone. Poured into a half-pint.
A: Clear, very dark red-brown body with a thin layer of tan foam that forms a ring almost instantaneously. Ok.
S: Mild and yet wild. The aromas are soft and understated, but I'm picking up coffee roast and even some smoke. LIcorice, too. Crazy, and inspiring.
T: Smoke, coffee, caramel, chocolate, and earthiness all show up, but recede amiably on the clean, slightly bittersweet finish. Coffee lingers on the aftertastes. Delicious.
M: Thin and almost flat. A little more life would have been a big help.
O: WHile not a perfect beer in any regard, this was an absolutely stunning example of the style. THe roasted and caramelized nuances were strong enough to be memorable and yet subdued enough to allow for maximum quaffability. With more body and carbonation this would have passed for a great porter, and I'm just blown aay that so much flavor can be packed into a 3.2% beer. If you get the chance, drink this beer.

Found this gem in the Red Lion pub in Southwold, one of Adnams own, and within sight of the brewery.
This is my first mild, and I have to say I love this beer. It's dark yet light in flavour, I suppose the word would have to say everything about it is mild! It's very drinkable and at a 3.2% I did not feel guilty about getting a second pint that early in the afternoon. The malts are well balanced, and though the drink could be described as watery, it all works well.
