Irish Red Ale |  5.00% ABV

Availability: Winter

Notes/Commercial Description:
This unique beer style may be one of Ireland’s best kept secrets. Toffee-like in aroma, malty in flavour and copper in colour. With a hint of northwest hops, Irish Red finishes clean and smooth.

650ml bottle. A week or so early for the big day, but this may have some more traditional competition by then...

This beer pours a clear, medium bronzed amber colour, with two fingers of puffy, silken foamy, somewhat bubbly off-white head, which leaves some decent pockmarked concrete walls of lace around the glass as it evenly subsides.

It smells of bready caramel malt, dry white crackers, faint muddled orchard fruit, and musty, earthy hops. The taste is grainy, crackery pale malt, a touch of salted caramel, dried apricot, overripe pear, more dank leafy, grassy hops, and a slight metallic alcohol edge.

The carbonation is fairly underwhelming, but still supportive, the body medium-light in weight, and really not all that smooth, as a sort of flinty sharpness pervades. It finishes off-dry, the now somewhat sour breadiness playing off a lingering fruity astringency.

Quite in line with the big old world producers, though without that hint of creaminess. Plain, grainy, and disjointedly fruity - nothing here worthy of returning to after the quasi-holiday passes, I'm afraid.

650mo bomber poured into tulip 14/3/13

A clear dark reddish amber with small bubbles feeding a finger of foam that doesn't last long and leaves a single ring of lace

S hard toffee, herbal and citric hops, metallic notes, and some iced tea

T much like the smell really but with some bred crust and a slight nutty aspect, a little more malt and slightly less hops compared to the nose

M medium bodied, enough carbonation to please and a herbal, bready citrus aftertaste

O not a bad balance between malt and hops, pretty easy to drink and a decent example of the style

I don't mind this brew but it costs a little more then its worth if you ask me, 8$ is a bit steep for what I'm getting. No reason not to drink it though but it might be a one and done even though it's respectable

Nice to see a brand new seasonal from Vern at GI. This is good stuff, a PNW Red Ale with a healthy dose of hops with with that malty backbone that makes the style. One of the best seasonals from GI in awhile and hoppier than expected. With Phillips and Howe Sound making reds this seems to be a style on the rise

Nice Irish red with a bit of a Northwest twist to it. Rich copper colour with some light brown highlights. Thin, off-white head. Bread, yeast and toffee. Light fruit hints to it.

Nice fresh bread and toffee in the taste. This lacks the slight metallic character I tend to find in reds. Quite enjoyable. This is a little chewy and can be a little bit on the heavy side at times. A nice brew to sit back and relax with.

Granville Island Red pours a clear orange amber. The beer was foamy, in fact it foamed right out of the bottle. The aroma is slightly nutty caramel, with some herbal hops. More caramel in the flavor, but not too sweet. There is a nice earthy, herbal hop flavor, and decent bitterness in the finish. After foaming out of the bottle, carbonation is a bit mild.
