Look: the dark, deep red of a Guinness.
Nose: Lots of opposing fragrances -- from sweet spring flowers to freshly harvested hay in a barn.
Taste: Captivatingly hoppy bitterness, with aromas of dark chocolate, freshly roasted coffee???
I have a hard time figuring out how this fascinating ale is supposed to be an American "imperial" *Pale* Ale.

Unknown vintage; drank 2/27/15 @ the Yarchives.
Brown/black appearance.
Khaki head; a curtain of tree-rung lace.
Tangerine & mild roasted coffee bean nose.
Medium thick, smooth mouthfeel.
Strawberry & tangerine flavors up front; smooth milk chocolate finish.
A well-crafted black IPA. I look forward to my next one.

part of the brewers gone wild series, thanks to my girlfriends parents for hooking this up for me! its awesome beer, one of the better black ipa types i have had in recent memory, there is a lot going on in it, including more yeast character (english in nature) than most any other i can recall. its jet black and shiny on the pour, holding over an inch of head and looking real clear and shiny until i pour out the last few yeast cakey drops. it smells brutally hoppy, with slight notes of raw green pepper, mowed lawn, and spicy hops. heavy black dark malt and unmalted roasted barley here, charred and scorched, about as deeply roasted a base as you can get, with plenty of body to support it. bitter as can be though, with dark chocolate and slight smoked notes to it before the hops kick in. spicy again on the hops, i wonder what they use here. whatever it is, there is a ton of it, hops linger long after the swallow on the tongue, which is sort of shocked from bitter bite. impressive depth of flavor here, i like the yeast note in it, and i like how intense it is overall. the alcohol presence is subtle, but its useful here, slowing me down just enough, this is a really big beer and more than one i think would be close to too much. i really liked this though, as i have liked all of the beers i have had from this series so far. really nice stuff right here for the intense black ale enthusiast!

A - Black body, hints of brown, opaque, with a light tan head, lots of tiny lacing.
S - Quiet, hop hints of pine and zest, and a malt background, roasted line.
T - A malt-hop mix, well executed. The pine and pith and zest mingle with a coffee and burnt toast malt line. Close is brisk with the slightest hint of both aspirin bitterness and sweet malt caramel and molasses.
F - Sticky and crunchy, with a definite drying close. Given its bitterness, though, it is surprising how light a touch the close has on the tongue.
O - A well calibrated black IPA, walking up to punishing without crossing over, with clear malt character and massive hop in the front and back. Yep. This is a good one.

Tyranena is only 15 minutes from my house and for the longest time I did not frequent the tap room on a regular basis. I think it was mostly because I thought their beers were pretty run of the mill. Recently though they have upped their game and I have made more visits to Lake Mills to seek out the newest beers that this improving brewery is cranking out.
I am not a big fan of black IPAs but figured I would give this one a shot. This tastes almost like a hybrid between a porter and an IPA. There is definitely a hop bite but it is not over the top. What is also present is a malty roastiness. I think this is a solid representation of the style but just not my favorite.

really dark, with a tan head.
smell is roasty, but as it warms the alcohol pushes forward.
flavor was more roasted when it was cold, but became more herbal as it warmed.
oily and lingering, this one is. the bitterness hangs around.
this really does walk the line between black ipa and a roasty porter.

L: Pours deep dark brown under a clingy 1” tan foam cap with a fine bead that takes 3 minutes to collapse into a thick film. The lace is splotchy and quickly disappears. S: Dark roast, some floral and light fruit aromas. T: Tastes like a dry porter with a moderate hop accent. Has a lingering citrus rind bitter poke on the finish. No harsh or burnt roast flavors, traces of coffee but the bitterness is predominantly hop driven F: Very creamy texture, soft palate, medium body, no warming, moderate carbonation with faint grainy astringency on the finish. O: Drinks like a hoppy dry porter.
