Copper orange with a one finger head that leaves weak dots of lace on the glass.

Huge hop nose. There's tons of fruits (grapefruit, mango, fresh oranges). The smell also reminds me of pine sap on my hands after handling pine wood.

Big hoppy taste which is sweet and fruity at first but turns very piney and dry. Good but not great. Many thanks to dhchatfield for this one.

100% clear reddened copper body with a thin off white head that quickly dissipates to a very thin skim. I would appreciate a thicker head and more lasting head the carbonation streams are great.

Aroma is dominated by fresh, juicy green hops. Juniper is present in hefty doses. Not as complicated as many DIPAs but it delivers the necessities in heaping portions.

Taste begins with pine sap and is followed by grapefruit. Really juicy and nice. Also limited in complexity and depth when held to the big 5 DIPAs but not without some great straightforward hoppiness.

Mouthfeel is light, spicy, biting, bitter as hell, and leaves a great tingly sensation in one’s mouth. Lacks the creamy, tongue wrapping quality of DIPAs like Dreadnaught but certainly bitter...really, really bitter.

Drinkable as a DIPA can get and lighter than almost any other DIPAs.

Seems more like a really hoppy regular IPA than a DIPA in some ways but great as either.

Purchased from Ray's Liquors in Wauwatosa, WI. Pours a deep amber body with a white head. Aroma is of pine needles and a bit of citrus. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with a great balance between the bitter an sweet flavors. It has a lasting hop presence that isn't over the top. Not my favorite double IPA, but a good one.

12oz stubby bottle that I picked up last time I was up in Wisco. Pours into my glass a clear deep amber orange with red hints. A half inch of creamy head sits on top. Aromas start with lush hops, super citrusy with lots of grapefruit and good bit of pine as well. Deep caramel malts underneath. A wonderful mix of hops that really jumps out at you. Good start....

First sip brings a blast of sweet caramel maltiness that's almost automatically met by a wall of bountiful hop flavors. Big green hop cones full of citrusy, grapefruit goodness along with some pine sap resiny flavors as well. Flows down with a big smack of bitterness that lingers and finishes with a bit of residual sweetness. No alcohol to be found here...just a tasty Imperial IPA all around!

Mouthfeel is nice and chewy with a good steady carbonation. This is not overly heavy and it goes down pretty damn smoothly. Easy to drink for a DIPA, I'm guessing there is a fair amount of alcohol here. Another tasty treat from Tyranena...I hope to see this one around again!!

Clear copper, caramel body. Half inch of nearly white head to start that reduced down to a skim layer of patchwork foam. A little foam clings to the glass.

Sweet bread malt aroma with some earthy and floral sweet aromas. Fairly straight forward but does have a little oomph to it.

Nice balance here, although I have had this one for a little bit it still has some hop aroma. Bready, dinner roll malts with earthy, herbal, peat-like hops. Pine resin in the finish. No alcohol to speak of.

Nice medium to full mouthfeel with lower carbonation levels, but still enough to evoke some feeling of crispness.

Pretty easy to put back. Nicely hopped flavor with a good amount of balance from heavy malting. A very nice beer.

Guy on the bottle looks like me. This scares my ass. "Shall we?" Yeah, I believe we shall... deep red-amber with an offwhite head, fine bubbles, dissipates to a thin layer that hangs on a while. Aroma of good weed, grapefruit, and a hint of cedar - not hamster cage cedar, but walking thru a forest cedar. Almost catty but not quite.

Whoaaaa... what was that? This is not a charade. Starts with a syrupy, red-ale caramel malt sort of maltiness, then the hops just explode on the palate - first citrus in the flavor, then a vaporous, spicy, all over the tongue bitterness that grows, bringing along with it a damned tasty alcoholic warming surge. Before it ever hits the back of the throat the alcohol vaporizes. Neat trick. Finish is all kinds of neat flavors that I just can't quite categorize - dunno what hops are used in here, but the flavors are this huge blend of medium toasted chewy malt, alcohol, and citrus/pine hops. Great body, completely appropriate to the brew. I wanna drink more just to figure this one out. This is a beer of extraordinary magnitude.

Damn. yet another dimension to the style, and a highly enjoyable one at that. Thanks to BA JeffKrenner for the bottle!!

Bottle pours a mildly hazed copper amber body with a small offwhite head that gradually falls into sticky lacing. Aroma has pink grapefruit and grassy and leafy hops. Medium body has an ideal carbonation and an earthy hops bite. Taste features a spunky pine cone bitterness that is rounded by a citrusy sweetness of pineapple and orange. Lemon zest and spicy hop notes add dimension. Caramel malt backbone is subtle but provides a fine balance. Finishes dry and bitter with a lasting hop impression. I didn't notice any alcohol and really wondered if I was drinking a DIPA or just an excellent regular IPA. Very well balanced, overall, and quite tasty. Highly recommended. Thanks to dancinwillie for this one.

Many thanks to jpm30 for this gem...wanted to try this one the minute I found out it existed.
Bright copper color with a half a finger or bright, white head...fades quickly and leaves some streaking lace.
Sweet caramel malt at first, but finishes with a heavy dose of citrus hop.
Grapefruit and sun tea mainly in the taste...wickedly bitter. Slight malt sweetness attempts to balance out this brew, but is not very successful...not a bad thing. Finishes very dry...the hops scraping the taste buds into numbness.
Mouthfeel is medium-bodied and the carbonation is a bit high.
I dig this one a bit more than the BWFH, but not a session brew for me (duh)...another hoppy treat from Tyranena.

Thanks to boolshot for a bottle of this gem. This my kind of DIPA. This beer has a strong hops smell & taste without too much bitterness. It goes down smooth without a hint of an alcohol taste. If I could, I would buy this beer on a regular basis and I am a hophead. Cheers.

Poured into a mug.

Appearance - Holding the glass up to a light is like peering through a piece of amber. Pours a subtle head that leaves a nice lacing on the glass.

Smell - Very floral perhaps corriander/lavender or jasmine with a grapefruit light undertone.

Taste - Upfront blast of hops that starts and finishes very smooth for the amount of flavor.

Mouthfeel - Medium body to it without being heavy, not exceptionally bitter but with a great combination of hop flavors.

Drinkability - I'm sad that I only bought a 4pack! Fantastic beer that I love start to finish. Perhaps a bit too strong to be a session beer for myself but when I'm in the mood for one beer this is easily at the top of the list.

Received this in a very nice package from my man Roburg, thanks!

Appearance- Poured a mildly surprising darker shade of golden amber. Gotta say though that this beer had an amazing three fingers or so of really creamy white head that lasted forever. Probably still had a finger of it on top by the time the beer was done. Lots and lots of sticky lacing and a fair amount of carbonation in the body of the beer as well. Quite a looker.

Smell- Wow, really really fruity. I get an interesting note of a lemon citrusesque hop profile right off the bat that I'm not necessarily used to. Interesting though and combined with great notes of orange cream and grapefruit rind. Smells quite nice.

Taste- More notes of tropical fruits. Lots of oranges and cream and grapefruit flavors predominantly. Get a nice bite of piney resin in there as well however along with the fruit flavors. Lots of sweet malts showing through towards the finish however and take away a bit from the initial flavor profile.

Mouthfeel/Drinkability- Because of the sweet malty finish, I found that the beer got a little overly sticky towards the end, though it wasn't a major issue on the whole. Drinkability was decent for the style as well but the sweetness got a touch cloying.

Overall, a solid DIPA, though I felt that its look and nose were actually the high points for me. Give it a shot though if you get the chance.

Tyranena Brewing Company is brewery that is new to me and obviously so is Hop Whore. This beer is on the smaller end of DIPA, and has an overpromising label description, "Overpowering perfume, dripping with luscious hop flavor. And, oh what a body. You're in for one helluva experience." This is a pretty fresh beer too, brewed on 8/31/10, so not too old, it just doesn't have the big hop nose or flavor that I'm hankering for. It does have a modicum tangerine and grapefruit aroma, tropical fruit flavors and solid bitterness, but when Pliny the Elder or Ruination are the standards, this beer comes up short. The body was okay and it was fairly drinkable. I just want a lot more hops and less alcohol burn.

Amber and orange pour, average head and good lacing retention. Aroma, very luscious, perfumy wet hop feel. Very enjoyable.

Taste, big pungent hop feel to it. Malt backbone ample, yet remains slanted to the hops as it should. This is not a style that should be balanced. Bready if you can discern it a bit through the fantastic hop bill. Not overly bitter. A little caramel, not overly thick. Hides alcohol good, hops do not diminish downward. Good price, 7.99 for 4 pack.

Received from winning the Sunday Night Football Squares LIF.

Poured into a tulip glass dark burnt orange with a one finger white head. Good lacing all the way down the glass. The scent has some faint hop notes that are over powered by the carmel malts. The taste is about the same as the nose. There is a strong carmel flavor with not enough hop presence for the style. This is stronger than an IPA but not enough for a IIPA. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with not a noticable alcohol presence. Carbonation is a little low. The lower alcohol makes this fairly drinkable, but it still isn't much of a IIPA.

12oz into an Allagash Tulip. Bottled on August 31, 2010 - right at 4.5 months old.

Pours a clear copper/amber with very little head and no lacing. A little too dark for the style, but not unappealing.

Nose is subdued earthy hops and a touch of sweet malt. Pretty weak for a DIPA, more along the lines of a standard IPA.

Taste is a balance of bitter and sweet. A little too much residual sweetness, but overall very good.

Mouth is medium full. Pretty smooth. Would like this one a touch drier.

Drinks nice, but overall this is a confusing beer. It looks like an amber, smells like an IPA, and has a sweet finish. I enjoyed drinking it, but would not call it a DIPA. Thanks to StayWhatYouAre2 for sending it as an extra.

Poured into my FFF tulip

A - A dark orange with hints of brown and red blended in. Had a dirty white head that bubbled up to a finger and slowly dissipated leaving only a ring of foam around the end

S - There is definitely a mix of hops and sweeter malts here with the malts slightly dominating. I get orange peel, caramel malt, and, surprisingly, brandied dates. The dates were not expected for the style.

T - At first, I get a slight pine and grapefruit hops but they don't dominate as a malty sweetness comes through. There is a slight hint of lemon as well. Near the end of the beer, a big bitter, pine hop flavor comes through to remind you that this is a DIPA. The hops remain in the finish which is where I also get the brandied dates. Overall, there is a lot of flavor here but it doesn't integrate perfectly which prevents this from being a great one.

MF - thick body with enough carbonation to make this very creamy and smooth. Does have a slight alcoholic bite in the finish

O - An interesting DIPA that has a lot going on but it doesn't all blend together that well. That is one of the main complaints about the beer. The highlight is that it has a great, creamy mouthfeel that makes this super smooth.

A. Cloudy copper. Little to light head. Good retention.
S. Hops with caremel and raisins. Sweet and spicey scent.
T. Hops. Spice. A bit of raisin. Floral hints as well.
M. Great! Good amount of carb. kind of thick. Very smooth.
D. I was not disappointed. Once again this brewery has proven to be one of the best around. Wish I had a few more of these!
