12 ounce bottle into a pint glass

A - A rigorous pour delivers a copper, reddish body that is somewhat translucent when held up to the light. A white one finger head rises and fades to a lace after a couple of minutes. Faint amounts of carbonation are visibly rising to the top of the glass.

S - Lots of dark roasted malts and some bread notes are also present. Rich caramel and toffee notes are present. A nice overall sweetness and a good balance but nothing that really jumps out and grabs you. Very enticing though.

T - Lots of malts standout up front with some bready notes as well. Caramel, toffee, and some other sweet notes are present along with a slightly boozy aspect as well. I would like to see more malts, toffee and caramel, but for the most part the beer is solid and continues to improve as it warms.

M - Medium bodied beer with a good amount of carbonation. Malts are the dominating aspect of this beer as it enters the mouth. A nice balance of toffee and caramel notes is followed by some carbonation. Finish is slightly boozy but becomes less noticeable as the beer warms.

D - This is not the best scotch ale I've had to date but it's a solid offering from Tyranena. I would like to see the malts, toffee, and caramel notes turned up and a little less booziness but considering there is almost 8% abv, it's rather impressive. (1,354 characters)

12 oz. bottle, with no apparent bottled on date present. A new winter seasonal to me from Tyranena Brewing Co., acquired as part of a mixed six pack at the local Binny's. Expectations are about average, but I'm going in unbiased. No abv listed on the bottle.

Poured into a clear balloon snifter.

A - Pours a caramel amber colored body with about a half finger conjuration of off-white head that falls within seconds. Body is a dark ruby in the glass, with some okay clarity. Conjures some nice foam when swirled in the glass.

S - Smell is pretty tame, but hits it's mark, I suppose. Some buttery diacetyls, grainy corn, roasted hazelnuts & earthy peanuts, and butterscotch / toffee. Smells good, but the adjunct-smelling corn is throwing me off just a bit.

T - Taste follows the nose: creamy buttery diacetyls, caramel malt, grainy corn husk, earthy woodiness, subtle chocolate / cocoa nuances, and salty roasted hazelnuts / peanuts.

M - Feel is smooth and creamy, with some good roasted nuttiness lingering on the palate. Medium full bodied with good carbonation. Not too thick or bloating.

Overall, a nice take on the style by Tyranena, but nothing extraordinary. A fairly simplistic offering, slightly above average at best. A tame and approachable take on the style, I suppose, but good enough for what it is. Alcohol is nicely masked, and makes no appearance at all. Glad to have tried it, but I couldn't see myself wanting this more than once in a year.

Nice deep cola pour with a hint of red and two fingers of khaki foam on top. Aromas of clean roasted malts with caramel and raisin. Fruit accents and toasted bread. Big and malty upfront with mild hop backbone.

First sip brings creamy crisp malt over the palate with some roast and a mix of caramel, fruit and raisins. A bit of chocolate in the mix along with a toasted bread hint. Malt sweetness is there but not overwhelming. Flows down with a touch of earthy, herbal hop bitterness. Overall a nice malty treat here.

Mouthfeel is smooth and creamy with a strong malty body. Goes down quite easily with mellow bubbles. Overall, a nice robust scotch ale for the cooler months and a great addition for Tyranena if I do say so myself. Hope this will be around next year! (770 characters)

Serving glass: Poured from bottle into Imperial Pint.

Appearance: Dark reddish-orange with thin, sustained, off-white head.

Smell: Peat, toffee and dark fruit. Simple but nice.

Taste: Along with the light peat, there are fruity and spicy notes that are almost Belgian-like. Lots of toffee, some nuttiness, and a finish that includes some floral hops, but remains mostly sweet.

Feel: Medium-full body with moderately low carbonation. Finish is not as dry as I would prefer.

Overall: A very tasty, and fairly big, everyday Scotch Ale. If the finish dried up a little more and played against the core sweetness, this would be sublime. (636 characters)

This beer was poured out of a bottle and into a pint glass. It had a dark amber colour to it; almost caramel. Ale had a sweet malt nose with hints of oak and scotch. It also had a slight scotch taste to it, along with malts and a very slight roasted taste, but not by much. No significant lingering flavours or after tastes.

Would I buy this beer again? Maybe. (361 characters)

Misty complexioned, and colored somewhere amongst tangerine, amber, and brown. The head is short, more or less merely a collar of beige.
Scented of dried peaches and strawberries, bran, honey, sweet breads, earth, pipe tobacco, hard water, and dried leaves. It's a beautiful aroma, and spot-on, just a hair on the timid side.
Enters with a honey-graham maltiness that segues fruitier right away, while maintaining underlying bread and toasted grain notions throughout. Flashes of apricots, melons, pineapple, and maraschino cherries, then the floor falls out as it drops into an rivers- edge earthiness and fragrant tobacco. It conclude with a heathery hop note, a low-level tea-like bitterness, and a minor reprise of fruit.
Lowly carbonated, but what is there is persistent. It's not a muddy, smoky peat monster. It's earthy tones are evident, but there is a balancing brightness here too, and that helps make this tremendously quaffable. (941 characters)

Big bourbon aroma. An interesting taste with some sourness. Still a good drinkability at the end of a meal and tasting. Dark colour with generous lasting off-white head.Above average mouthfeel.Liked the vanilla, long whiskey finish.Decent for the style. (253 characters)

Deep amber brown, with a thin head and no lace.

Malty sweet aroma -- sugar, spice, earthy.

Taste is chewy like caramel. Definitely a savory brew, with a thick, whiskeylike character. Do I detect an alcohol sting late in the tasting?

Not bad, but almost too overmalty for my palate. (284 characters)

12oz into snifter: from notes.
A: Pours a syrupy thickness from the bottle. The body is a deep, murky shade of amber. The off white head did not foam up and only holds into a thin layer around the rim of the glass. Very minimal lacing.
S: A very nice and malty sweetness, I feel it is on the lower end of the intensity spectrum, but a nice subtle character.
T/M: The first impression of the front of this brew is a malty sweetness and a nice Scottish flavor. A nice mouthfeel that is thick and creamy while still being smooth. The final bit of viscosity is short and does not promote a prolonged lingering effect. The sweet raisin character is a pleasant flavor, with many other sweet notes.
D: This is a nice and easy drinking beer. Not too heavy, while missing a bit of the intensity of other in the style, this is a nice brew that I would come back to and have a couple. (873 characters)
