Poured from a bottle into a Sam Adams glass. Dark brown, completely opaque. Nice light brown foam that dissolves to a ring and some film. Minimal lacing.

Smell is rich chocolate, roasted malt and bourbon.

Taste is up from roasted malt. Nice caramel, vanilla and bourbon. Very light alcohol towards the end. Kind of a chocolate finish.

Mouthfeel is thick and creamy. Light carbonation. Nice.

Overall outstanding beer. Wonderful flavors throughout.

On tap at the Local in Madison, WI. Served in cheap stemmed red wine glass - the sort you would get your basket of Chianti served in if you were dining in a little Italy. Not really appropriate for beer but I was glad that I didn't get a whole pint of this as it is a rather intense brew and I wasn't really prepared for it.

Appearance: Dark brown, near black and nontransparent with a swirly tan head that resembles the Doppler of a hurricane.

Aroma: Sugary booze, powerful roasted malt and twangy rye notes, hints of oily cheese, Irish coffee, and mocha syrup.

Taste: Sweet and boozy. Lots of chocolate in a syrupy or Godiva liquor sort of way. Coffee comes on luscious and mouth coating too with some pretty fresh bean flavor to boot. Rye offer some twang. There is a general fruitiness that I can't yet place but might after more servings.

Mouthfeel: Robust and full bodied. Warming in a major way. Gives off the quality of being thick like a chocolate malt. Mildly biting coffee/oat bitterness offers some balance but not much. This puppy is rich and sweet with lingering sugar notes and lasting alcohol avidity.

Drinkability: This is a treat but I can't see myself having more than one in a sitting.

Style: This doesn't fit any category. I would have called it an American Porter since that American precursor seems to translate as experimental half of the time. Still, Baltic Porter fits alright since this brew is certainly big enough to be one.

Served in a 12oz. snifter at Bavarian Lodge in Lisle Il

It pours a very dark brown with a tan head that lingers. A generous amount of lacing lines the glass.

I'm picking up a lot of chocolate and coffee notes here with some whiskey in the back-end. Its a strong dominant nose that is inviting.

The upfront taste is very heavy toffee like flavors. It then goes into a strong but not overpowering whiskey. I'm not picking up any rye as I thought I would.

The body and mouthfeel is thinner than i thought given the strong nose. The whiskey may have helped in that.

Picked this up during my "make a sixer" fest in Madison. Thanks to Steve's Liquors - great people. Since then, Tyranena is in Chicago and I'm looking forward to trying more of their brews.

A: Poured from a 12oz bottle, the color is dark reddish brown - almost black. The head was small, coffee stained and creamy. It dissipated quickly to a ring and a dusting. Glows reddish when held up to the light and has some mahogany on the edges. No lacing to speak of.

S: Whiskey type burn in the rose but does also have a deep roasty malt in the background. Booze is definitely the victor in this battle though.

T: Roasty burned malt flavor which is quickly taken over by the whisky flavor. The booze attacks the palet. The finish and aftertaste is a dry, roasty, coffee/dark chocolate/vanilla with the booze sticking around. A very robust flavor. Roastiness came through stronger as the drink progressed.

M: Nice creamy mouth feel that makes the medium body feel fuller. There is a prickliness from the alcohol and low carbonation.

D: I'm someone who doesn't enjoy overly boozy beer but this was very drinkable. Having said that, I did find that the booze did get in the way of appreciating the porter aspect of the brew. Very nice beer.

Pours into my glass a deep dark black with hints of dark brown on the edges. A quarter inch of tan foam on top that leaves spotty lacing on the way down. Aromas start out with well roasted, slightly burnt, spicy malt tones. A mix of coffee and chocolate work in along with more mellow woody whiskey tones. A touch of vanilla as well. Quite robust overall. The spicy, bready nature of the rye really shines through.

First sip brings a big roasty, toasty, spicy dark malt body upfront. It moves into a mix of coffee and chocolate flavors with vanilla notes as well. Woody undertones meld in with a kiss of whiskey. As it flows down the bready, spicy rye aspect really kicks in. It finishes off dry, with a nice bitterness and a lingering whiskey afterthought. Just a good, rich brew overall.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied with a nice hefty chewiness brought on by the rye bill I am guessing. Slightly coarse on the palate. This one goes down smooth and is like a meal in a glass. Overall, a darn good rye porter from Tyranena. I enjoy the fact that the barrel aging accentuates it instead of taking over. I would gladly drink many more of these!

A - pours pitch black with one finger tan head. Head has okay retention and leaves a decent amount of lacing.

S - Plentiful roasted malts with subtle whiskey notes. Not getting much rye spiciness in the nose.

T - Similar to smell with the addition of a bit of spice from the rye.

M - Medium mouhfeel with an earthy dry finish.

O - Enjoyable. The whisky notes work well with the roasted malt.

Fantastic brew!

I'm not much of a porter drinker, so take this all with a grain ;-)

Nice, dark & rich color as to be expected.

The smell is wonderful. My favorite part of this brew. Malty, bourbon-chocolate. Very nice. Very pleasant.

The taste is very nicely rounded if not particularly expectional, but everything blends nicely; the malt, chocolate & coffee notes countered with that pleasant bourbon.

Overall a very nice brew. I'm thouroughlyl enjoying it as is the wifey who first turned her nose up at it...

Appearance: black in color, opaque, 1 inch head, moderate carbonation

Smell: dark chocolate and whiskey

Taste: complex-dark chocolate and whiskey dominate, touches of cocoa, and light rye at the end

Mouthfeel: sweet, oaky, moderate carbonation, heavy bodied

Overall: A very slow drinker that was executed excellently. Love the complexity here. The oak and chocolate merge better here than what some other brewers have done. I would have this again, but one per night seems about right.

The beer pours a dark brown to black color with a cream-colored head. The aroma is rye, bitter coffee, bitter chocolate and roasted malt. The flavor is rye, whiskey, alcohol, roasted malt and coffee. Thick mouthfeel and low carbonation with some nice alcohol warming.

Pours either dark brown, or light black, however you want to look at it. Small reddish head. Smells malty. Smells of rye and whiskey as well, with a bit of chocolate. I love the rye in the taste. Also hints of chocolate, malt, a bit of coffee, and just a slight whiskey flavor on the finish. I would've liked a bit more whiskey flavor, but this is blended pretty well, however not layered really. I taste everything all at once. Mouthfeel is thin and slightly carbonate, and slightly creamy. Pretty decent porter.

Black throughout with a small dark brown head that actually stays around for most of the beer's duration, eventually leaving an oily sheen and spots of stick down the glass.

A pleasant combination of rye whiskey, chocolate, mild roast, and more barrel influence come together very nicely. Very minimal presence of alcohol in the aroma.

The flavor follows the aroma, with good amounts of rye whiskey, chocolate, and roast combining quite pleasantly. There's some sweetness and a low level of bitterness.

Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Very appropriate.

I was very much impressed with this one. This one came together very nicely and was a great way to end the night.

Appearance- Pours a nice rich, opaque black out of the bottle with a thin quarter finger dark brown head sitting on top. Head dies back to a thin sheet and then sticks around for the duration of the drink.

Smell- Interesting. I get the usual notes of rich roasted malt for a porter, along with some bitter chocolate. However, the rye and rye whiskey barrel aging really show through in a unique spicy characteristic. I still haven't had that many rye related beers, so my lexicon is a bit weak in describing the exact flavors. I really like it though.

Taste- Lots of rich roasted malts, chocolate, and perhaps the slightest coffeeish taste as per the nose. Again, the rye and rye whiskey really show through in a quite interesting spiciness that lingers throughout. I like it and the beer ends on a note of warming alcohol.

Mouthfeel/Drinkability- Mouthfeel is substantial for a porter and adequately carbonated. Drinkability is decent as well, though the alcohol evident in the finish takes a bit away from it the further you get it.

Overall, a very interesting and quite delicious take on a porter. Give this one a try for its uniqueness if you get the chance.

Brown pour, slight tan head, about 1/2" deep. Nice mild bourbon and chocolate aroma. Nothing too heavy or boozy. Well put together.

The taste is even better, chocolate is even bigger, still the bourbon remains noticeable, yet nowhere near dominating. Smooth, bitterness stays down. A great beer for introducing people to barrel aged stuff, but also plenty decadent for experienced drinkers to have at the same time. The rye is a great experience, seems to bring out a little more sweetness with whiskey flavors, as opposed to a dry peppery when used in non barrel aged beers.

There is a reason why I trade so much rarity andwhatnot between the Bruery and the Eclipse beers out to my Wisconsin/Marquette peeps, I get a ton of great beer quantity wise. Seriously, Tyranena could put this in a 22 or 750 bottle and people would pay $15 bucks for it anyday. At like $10 for a 4 pack, this is just a phenomenal beer.

A- Jet black pour with a very impressive thick two finger head. This beer leaves some excellent lacing but the retention isn't up to par.

S- Typical of a porter lots of chocolate, pleanty of coffee. Along with some toasted malts, bordering on burnt. The rye whiskey isn't coming through to me.

T- Not nearly as bitter as a typical porter, much sweeter. Again pleanty of chocolate. I'm pretty disappointed with the barrel aging process this beer went through, it either need more time in the barrels or it was blended to weakly. When the label says whiskey barrel aged I expect to get a hint of it, even a flash of alcohol hotness. But not with this beer, this doesn't make it a bad tasting beer but it didn't meet my expectations.

M- Good and smooth with some appropriate carbonation.

D- Porters are always very drinkable beers, this is not and exception. Tyranena has made a lot of good porters and this is one of them, I was just a little let down by the labels.

A- This beer pours a deep opaque brown body with a thin web of white had the develops into a thick foam of light tan. There is a soft carbonation of tiny bubbles that glide of the side of the glass. The head last for a few sips.

S- The smell of old wet wood has a slight sweet nutty quality and a dry burnt caramel note.

T- The taste of soft brown malt has a soft roasted bitterness to it and a slight spicy bite. The notes of soft wet wood and very faint bourbon hint give way to a slight salty roasted malt finish.

M- This beer has a medium mouthfeel with a slightly full yet slippery texture and an almost peroxide fizz at the finish. There is no alcohol heat noticed.

D- This beer has a mellow soft roasted malt flavor and not really the punch in the mouth that I would expect from a beer by this name.

Had this on tap at the brewery today after work.

Poured a dark black color with a half finger of beige head on it. Some ok lacing as well. Smell is nice - some smoked rye and malt and a hint of coffee coming through. Taste is good as well. Heavy malt up front with some bitter coffee on the finish. Mouthfeel is very heavy. This is a thick beer but it tastes great and goes down smooth. I really like this beer a lot. Not sure if it's only served at the brewery but I'll be back again for this one.

12oz. stubby brown bottle poured into a snifter. No dating.

A: Pours pitch black, no lighting. A rough pour gets a big ass head in the snifter with some light cascading. Nice sticky lacing.

S: Actually a bit light on the smell. Some cola and grape-y notes. Maybe a bit of coffee. Very subtle.

T/M: I definitely get some of the rye alcohol. Not overpowering or even potent but just a nice twist to things. Rich malts all over the place. More from the nose but with a touch more coffee and some sweet milky and chocolate notes. And my favorite part about Baltic Porters... the rich, creamy, velvety, smooth body. Not too heavy, but just right.

D: Goes down easy and lends a great twist on an already interesting style.

A - poured very silky and silently, almost too much. at most there was just a very thin layer of film on top of the glass, mostly settle to a small floating island. the beer is pretty much pitch black with just a faint amount of light getting through the edges.

S - mmmm warming. ample amounts of dark and slightly bitter chocolate, spicy rye, stale coffee, roasted malts, and finishes very a very nice and smooth whiskey.

T - big and bold. the rye whiskey is very easy to pick out, comes out in force after some initial slightly roasted malts. whiskey is joined by some dark chocolate (think Hershey's syrup) and just a bit of nuttiness. pretty good.

M - very thick body, quite syrupy. carbonation is very minimal, definitely missing some for a bit of texture. very creamy, coats the mouth.

D - bit of an odd one here. like the flavor, just not pretty to look at. the lack of carbonation makes it a bit wearing about halfway through.

A- Bottle pours pitch black with a nice cream head that fads to the edges. Not exactly what I was expecting for some reason but fits the profile of a porter perfectly
S- Aroma is dark malts, a little bit of coffee and some spicy hop character.
T- Again, not a lot of barrel aged flavor, even for the 40% blend. Lots of dark malts, some tobacco and coffee flavor, good hop bitterness and a smokey finish. Not sure where the rye is, but this is an excellent porter either way. Would love to try a 100% barrel aged version of this one as a little more of the bourbon flavor would fit in very well with the smokey malt.
M- Big for a porter but not overwhelming. Medium/heavy body, light carbonation.
D- overall great flavor for a porter. I am usually not a big fan of porters but this one can stand up with the best of the darker beers.

Pours a very nice looking solid incredibly viscous looking black with a cascading head that eventually settles ice creamy tan and hangs around for quite some time. Some slight ruby highlights around the edges of the glass. Lacing is actually minimal, suprisingly, as the head retention is quite solid.

Nose is mostly baltic in nature with some chocolate, roasted malt, grain, and slight alcohol.

Whoa! Very complex taste here. Notes of Creamy chocolate, dark grains, roasted, toasted, grain and rye, whiskey, some slight hazelnut and a bit of coffee. Wow. Very very thick full rich taste. The rye whiskey is actually noticeably different than bourbon, and compliments this one. Almost some peat flavor in here, a slight hint of old ale, but this one is totally dominant, and the base beer seems quite baltic at that. Wood is evident. Flavors get deeper and darker as this warms. Wow. This is a very very complex beer.

Mouthfeel is damn near tomato soup. Except black. Very very thick, viscous, chewy, glugging, blackness.

Drinkability is good here, but the complexity makes it hard to drink this quickly, and more than one would be quite rich.

Overall, I cant beleive the complexity of this beer. So many flavors and characteristics to unlock. Quite good and very interesting. Certainly one i will revisit, just so i can find what i surely missed from this twelve oz bottle. Lucky i have one more for a later (probably quite a bit later) date. A very good beer, and one that everyone should get to try, just for the experience of figuring this bitch out. Very good beer. Now, Its time for my sponge bath...

Solid bodied, the darkest mauve-brown possible. In simpler terms, it's black unless held to a light source. The head is small and brown, and resides for most of the time as a collar.
Fudge brownie aroma, with a persistence of toasted grain, which only slowly hints at rye. Traces of cappuccino, as char and the vanilla barrel-aging traits arise. It smells very Italian-desert-y, and delicious, but on the whole, the rye-whiskey barrel thing seems somewhat impotent, scent-wise, aside from this and some intermittent peppery wafts.
It rolls across the tongue a liquid fudge bath, stayed from a dooming sweetness by a prickly graininess...but only partially. It's like rolling a wet Tootsie Roll in flecks of rye. The peppery, spicy qualities of the grain are ultimately usurped by the sweet chocolate fudginess of the candy. And so it is here. Rye is a bit player, both grain-wise and whiskey-barrel-wise. The fudge is so dense and bullying as to not let anything else play. The barrel shows up late with heavily toasted coconut, caramel, and hazelnuts. Rye Whiskey and Bourbon are very closely related, and this does not tease out the subtle differences, other than it is marginally drier than Who's Your Daddy. The close is a continuation of fudge, inching towards chocolate milk, and a groping oaky vanilla woodiness. If you are looking for hops, you'll need to recalibrate your GPS system.
Full bodied, and basically obese in the mouth. Carbonation is virtually nil. For what it is, it fits perfectly. This is liquid dessert. Like sucking tiramisu through a straw. It's a great nightcap, but drinking it in succession might be asking too much.

As a fan of Rye in both its beer and whiskey forms, I was hoping for more of it in the profile. This is a blend of 40% Rye whiskery barreled beer and 60% unbarreled. Who's Your Daddy remains better because the barrel adds more, and I'd wager the blending percentages are vastly different.
As it stands now, the rye doesn't live up to its billing. It fails to show up in the grain bill, and the barrel hues lack complexity. I'll probably never say this again, but it needs more barrel influence to tease out the rye subtleties. For instance, take a sip of Sazerac Rye (6 or 18 year old, or better yet, the barrel-proof Thomas H. Handy), and ponder what any of those barrels would do to the profile and complexity here. It needs more unique aspects, not just rote barrel aged approximations. I can't wait to try the straight, unblended version at the taproom in Lake Mills in hopes to achieve something of the sort, because I have a suspicion the blend might be a culprit.

That's all nitpicking, obviously. This is very good, no question. As a big, gooey sweet imperial porter, it hits all the notes with general precision. If you liked Who's You Daddy and The Devil Made Me Do It, you'll like this, as it sits right in the middle.
But it's press description fits my personal preferences so well that anything less than remarkable is a failure.
I want the rye to shine much brighter in all its forms.

Oh...I want to love this, and it is soooo close...

Thanks for the trade Packforever1976. A rich and tasty porter, owing to the inclusion of the rye which gives it a spicy rye and vanilla and some chocolate and malty sweetness. Whiskey in the finish. A baltic? well I don't know. Well Above average mouthfeel.

Thick and black in appearance, with a slowly-rising head of tan bubbles. Spotty lace.

Nose has hints of chocolate and a little oak. Not bad, and not nearly as over-the-top as I'd expected. Nice.

Taste is big and malty sweet, with more of the chocolate tones up front. I get a little bit of the rye sharpness in there, too, but it's near the finish. Alcohol content is well-masked by the unusually well-balanced flavor profile.

A delicious and very enjoyable brew. Recommended!

Poured from a 12oz. bottle into a Captain Lawrence pint glass.

A: Heavy pour yields a .5 finger coarse, chocolate head that dissipates quickly. This one is pretty flat. Beer is a near opaque dark red. Lacing is ample. Decent given the lack of head retention.

S: Roasted coffee beans, dark chocolate, a bit a booziness from the barrel-aging. Nose here is not overwhelming, but rather quite subtle. The requisite odors are there, they're just not that prominent.

T: Big roasted chocolate and coffee upfront with a strong backbone of malty booze. This is damn tasty! Middle tastes of slightly sour roasted malts that carry over to the end. Sweetens again just a tad at the finish with a strong chocolate presence.

M: Medium bodied, rather flat as expected, oily, silky smooth. Finish is watery and messy. Feels like it leaves a coffee-chocolate film as it dissipates.

D: This beer is just downright enjoyable. Coffee and chocolate flavors meld perfectly here and the body makes it exquisitely drinkable. A highly recommended beer. Possibly the best damn porter I've ever had!

taste: comparisons can be made to the "who's your daddy porter" - but this one definitely has some toasted rye buried beneath providing a touch bitter kick, dark chocolate, caramel, whisky, more caramel...quite tasty
