Dark brown, almost black with a small tan head. Sweet smell with some toasty undertones, although not very strong. Roasted taste with apparent vanilla undertones. Chocolate flavor becomes more apparent along with hints of whiskey as the beer is consumed. Roasted malts very apparent in the aftertaste that lingers for quite some time.
This is a well crafted beer that does not disappoint.

12oz bottle courtesy of adamharbaugh, served in a DFH signature glass

A - poured very silky and silently, almost too much. at most there was just a very thin layer of film on top of the glass, mostly settle to a small floating island. the beer is pretty much pitch black with just a faint amount of light getting through the edges.

S - mmmm warming. ample amounts of dark and slightly bitter chocolate, spicy rye, stale coffee, roasted malts, and finishes very a very nice and smooth whiskey.

T - big and bold. the rye whiskey is very easy to pick out, comes out in force after some initial slightly roasted malts. whiskey is joined by some dark chocolate (think Hershey's syrup) and just a bit of nuttiness. pretty good.

M - very thick body, quite syrupy. carbonation is very minimal, definitely missing some for a bit of texture. very creamy, coats the mouth.

D - bit of an odd one here. like the flavor, just not pretty to look at. the lack of carbonation makes it a bit wearing about halfway through.

A- Bottle pours pitch black with a nice cream head that fads to the edges. Not exactly what I was expecting for some reason but fits the profile of a porter perfectly
S- Aroma is dark malts, a little bit of coffee and some spicy hop character.
T- Again, not a lot of barrel aged flavor, even for the 40% blend. Lots of dark malts, some tobacco and coffee flavor, good hop bitterness and a smokey finish. Not sure where the rye is, but this is an excellent porter either way. Would love to try a 100% barrel aged version of this one as a little more of the bourbon flavor would fit in very well with the smokey malt.
M- Big for a porter but not overwhelming. Medium/heavy body, light carbonation.
D- overall great flavor for a porter. I am usually not a big fan of porters but this one can stand up with the best of the darker beers.

A: Pours black, with a brownish red tint. Leaves no head whatsoever. Lacing is minimal.

S: Rye whiskey is faint, but present. Some roastiness and malty sweetness is also there, but fairly subdued.

T: Nice roasty, malty base typical of a robust porter. The Rye Whiskey kicks in and is pretty prevalent, especially on the finish. Some sweetness comes into play, adding plenty of vanilla, carmel and some chocolate. Leaves a fairly nice aftertaste, highlighting the whiskey.

M: Medium bodied. Carbonation is low, but fits perfectly with this style. Feels a little thicker than expected, and that's a good thing. Very cream and smooth. Good stuff.

D: Not sure on the ABV, but I think it's fairly low. I had no trouble polishing off my 12oz, and could probably have another.

A good, but not great beer from Tyranena. I liked the rye whiskey aspects, but would have liked a bit more Porter characteristics to shine through.

Bottle: Poured a deep black color stout witha nice fomay bhead with good retention and good lacing. Aroma of whiskey notes with some warmimg notes. Taste is a mix between some dry roasted malt with some notes of whiskey. Full body with some good carbonation and light alcohol noticeable. Lacking complexity but still very enjoyable.

Here’s a beer that was recommended to me offhandedly while shopping around the liquor store the other day. A rye porter aged in rye whiskey barrels sounds great, anyway, especially for a rye-lover like me.

Brewed less than a month ago (“BOTTLED ON 20FEB2012” on the neck of the bottle), though there was definitely some age on this one before it left the brewery.

A: This one pours chocolaty brown, rich with a shining darkness. The head is a one-and-a-half finger of brown suds, though it’s soon down to nothing more than some tan cream along the edge of the glass. Lacing is light and very oily, with only a small minority of foam strings staying around for more than a few seconds. It doesn’t look very carb-heavy at first, but a quick swirl makes some pillow-foam materialize from the deep body.

S: Wonderful: rich and sweet, it starts with robust aromas of salted caramel, roasted peanuts, toffee, chocolate sauce, and coffee. It’s so brazenly attractive – extraordinarily warm and inviting. That powerhouse of flavors gets augmented by some complex grain aromas, with smooth dark cherry and baked apple wheat scents over a thin layer of roasted pumpkin and pumpernickel bread. Some of the barrel shines through soon after – grain whiskey and charred wood, mainly. Great character on a beer of this style.

T: Full-on cocoa powder and coffee with cream are all over the front of this bold palate, bittersweet and roasty. That, plus caramel nougat, dark fruits, and a handful of peanut brittle really makes its upfront character very candy-like. Even so, there’s a spicy alcohol character behind that never gives up its mission: vanilla, big char tastes, and just plain old whiskey flavors appear to showcase their moderate hit of complexity. The barrel-aging isn’t readily apparent, unfortunately, but the alcohol spice is strong enough to notice. It finishes on a dry note, almost citrusy in its hop presence, and with some smokiness and acidity.

M: Smooth and rich: it fills out like a stout while always remaining drinkable. It definitely has its porter moments, though, with a characteristically light wateriness.

O: You’d think that a beer like this would have a rich, slow-sipping profile; fortunately, that’s not the case. I say “fortunately” because a light, drinkable character is what completely defines this beer: simply put, it’s enjoyable. Not too big and not too heavy, it remains a pleasure to drink at every sip. If this beer had more rye character, I’d have a constant supply of this beer in my fridge.

A - Brown beer, nice tan head, decent retention. Fades to a decent looking ring.

S - Some rye, but not tons, not spicy like some beers. Chocolate, whiskey, little vanilla, little coffee.

T - Nice tasting, some bakers cocoa, and a little bit of rye. Little bit of whiskey in there, but it's pretty mellow. Rye comes through on the end more than anywhere else.

M - Little bit of carbonation bite. Pretty smooth, viscous, medium bodied.

O - Pretty nice and enjoyable, I didn't like the finish a ton, but it was still a good beer.

A - Poured out an opaque, very dark brown color with little to no head. There were some small, tan bubbles at the surface of the beer.

S - It smelled of bourbon, rye and mild chocolate notes.

T - It tasted of coffee, rye and quite a bit of boozy bourbon. There was a sweet caramel and chocolate flavor that emerged as it continued to warm up.

M - It was soft and smooth with a sticky mouthfeel. It was medium to full-bodied.

D - This is an interesting beer. There are so many unique flavors.

Plenty of room in my 20oz tulip for the huge 3 finger head, that maybe would have stayed there all day if I didn't push it along by taking a few gulps of foam. Lacing is all good, great retention. Whiskey is present in the nose accompanied by chocolate malt and vanilla. Peppery, spicy alcohol coats the mouth right away. I am picking up mocha/java and butter in the middle and then more prominent and warming whiskey notes in the end. The feel is a buttery smooth, but a little on the thin side. This is one hell of a good porter. Complex and warming, a wonderful sipper and good companion by the fire. Glad I bought a four pack. Cheers!

I got this in a trade with joe1510. Thanks Joe!

This pours a near black(some reddish hues) with a 2 finger head of tan foam. Very god head retention and the lacing is impressive.

The smell has notes of roasted malt, chocolate, vanilla, and some rye but...I really had to struggle to get them as the nose is very light.

The taste, on the other hand, is very assertive.
I'm tasting a lot of rye with big portions of roasted malt, vanilla, and a bit of chocolate. I'm also getting some caramel malt that I didn't notice in the first couple of sips. They're tasty flavours but I'm also being hit my some noticeable alcohol that gives me quite the warming effect during and after the swallow. I reckon this one would benefit from some aging as this bottle is pretty darned fresh.(bottled Feb 4, 2008)

It's a bit light bodied but the carbonation is also light so that works for me.

Overall, I like where the brewer went with this beer and I'd certainly drink it again. Good stuff!

A- This beer pours a deep opaque brown body with a thin web of white had the develops into a thick foam of light tan. There is a soft carbonation of tiny bubbles that glide of the side of the glass. The head last for a few sips.

S- The smell of old wet wood has a slight sweet nutty quality and a dry burnt caramel note.

T- The taste of soft brown malt has a soft roasted bitterness to it and a slight spicy bite. The notes of soft wet wood and very faint bourbon hint give way to a slight salty roasted malt finish.

M- This beer has a medium mouthfeel with a slightly full yet slippery texture and an almost peroxide fizz at the finish. There is no alcohol heat noticed.

D- This beer has a mellow soft roasted malt flavor and not really the punch in the mouth that I would expect from a beer by this name.

12oz. stubby brown bottle poured into a snifter. No dating.

A: Pours pitch black, no lighting. A rough pour gets a big ass head in the snifter with some light cascading. Nice sticky lacing.

S: Actually a bit light on the smell. Some cola and grape-y notes. Maybe a bit of coffee. Very subtle.

T/M: I definitely get some of the rye alcohol. Not overpowering or even potent but just a nice twist to things. Rich malts all over the place. More from the nose but with a touch more coffee and some sweet milky and chocolate notes. And my favorite part about Baltic Porters... the rich, creamy, velvety, smooth body. Not too heavy, but just right.

D: Goes down easy and lends a great twist on an already interesting style.

Solid bodied, the darkest mauve-brown possible. In simpler terms, it's black unless held to a light source. The head is small and brown, and resides for most of the time as a collar.
Fudge brownie aroma, with a persistence of toasted grain, which only slowly hints at rye. Traces of cappuccino, as char and the vanilla barrel-aging traits arise. It smells very Italian-desert-y, and delicious, but on the whole, the rye-whiskey barrel thing seems somewhat impotent, scent-wise, aside from this and some intermittent peppery wafts.
It rolls across the tongue a liquid fudge bath, stayed from a dooming sweetness by a prickly graininess...but only partially. It's like rolling a wet Tootsie Roll in flecks of rye. The peppery, spicy qualities of the grain are ultimately usurped by the sweet chocolate fudginess of the candy. And so it is here. Rye is a bit player, both grain-wise and whiskey-barrel-wise. The fudge is so dense and bullying as to not let anything else play. The barrel shows up late with heavily toasted coconut, caramel, and hazelnuts. Rye Whiskey and Bourbon are very closely related, and this does not tease out the subtle differences, other than it is marginally drier than Who's Your Daddy. The close is a continuation of fudge, inching towards chocolate milk, and a groping oaky vanilla woodiness. If you are looking for hops, you'll need to recalibrate your GPS system.
Full bodied, and basically obese in the mouth. Carbonation is virtually nil. For what it is, it fits perfectly. This is liquid dessert. Like sucking tiramisu through a straw. It's a great nightcap, but drinking it in succession might be asking too much.

As a fan of Rye in both its beer and whiskey forms, I was hoping for more of it in the profile. This is a blend of 40% Rye whiskery barreled beer and 60% unbarreled. Who's Your Daddy remains better because the barrel adds more, and I'd wager the blending percentages are vastly different.
As it stands now, the rye doesn't live up to its billing. It fails to show up in the grain bill, and the barrel hues lack complexity. I'll probably never say this again, but it needs more barrel influence to tease out the rye subtleties. For instance, take a sip of Sazerac Rye (6 or 18 year old, or better yet, the barrel-proof Thomas H. Handy), and ponder what any of those barrels would do to the profile and complexity here. It needs more unique aspects, not just rote barrel aged approximations. I can't wait to try the straight, unblended version at the taproom in Lake Mills in hopes to achieve something of the sort, because I have a suspicion the blend might be a culprit.

That's all nitpicking, obviously. This is very good, no question. As a big, gooey sweet imperial porter, it hits all the notes with general precision. If you liked Who's You Daddy and The Devil Made Me Do It, you'll like this, as it sits right in the middle.
But it's press description fits my personal preferences so well that anything less than remarkable is a failure.
I want the rye to shine much brighter in all its forms.

Oh...I want to love this, and it is soooo close...

12oz bottle from a recent trade. Pours a dark brown with a minimal cascade of bubbles to the top, leaving a few streaks of lacing down the glass.

Loads of rye whiskey in the nose, reminds me of the Crown and cokes that were popular in university. Sweet, spicy rye, a bit of roasty malt, a hint of sweet brown sugar. Could use a little more heft to counter the rye.

Taste follows suit: rye, rye, roast, brown sugar, molasses, vanilla, hint of coffee,toast, a light bittering hops in the finish, just a faint whiff of alcohol (or at least the rye gives the impression of it). Thinnish body, not a ton of carbonation.

Not a bad beer, second rye whiskey aged beer I've had and this one comes out the winner. Well integrated but could use a little more heft or roast to balance a dominating sweetness. Well done.

A very dark brown body that lets some light through even at the very center. A tiny tan head creeps up but disappears almost immediately, leaving no head.

A big malt aroma that mixes a bit of chocolate with molasses. The barrel characteristics are in the background, featuring oak and whiskey.

The chocolate and molasses appear once again in the flavor, and are still the predominant characteristic, but the barrel flavors are stronger than in the odor. An overall rye spiciness, either from the whiskey or the rye malt, permeates the beer. Woody oak comes through, as does whiskey and a hint of vanilla. Pretty well balanced.

Moderate body and carbonation; pretty good.

Good drinkability on this one, another nice beer from the Brewers Gone Wild series.

Thanks Brian23456 for this tasty brew.

Poured an almost motor oil black into my Dogfish Head signature glass.
A one finger mocha colored head formed, but quickly faded.

The first aroma to shine through is the whisky, which is very pleasant. After that smell subsided, coffee, chocolate, and a roasted maltiness are present. All these together fortell a good beer is about to be consumed.

All the aromas noted above come through nicely in this one. I really enjoyed the whisky flavor but could have used less coffee. Fortunately as it warms up the coffee flavors mellow out, or the whisky gets stronger.

Good mouthfeel but it could be a little thicker. Had more of a stout feel than a porter.

This was a very drinkable beer that was enjoyed from start to finish. Would enjoy another one of these in a few months, but enjoyed getting at least this one.

Poured from a stubby 12 ounce bottle into my nonic pint glass. Appears a nearly opaque dark brown color with about a finger of ecru foam. Smells of molasses, cocoa, caramel, and mild whiskey notes. Tastes of bittersweet chocolate, coffee, touch of coconut, oak and whiskey. Alcohol is muted. Medium in body with mild to medium carbonation. The mild whiskey and alcohol notes make this one quite drinkable for my tastes.

The beer is dark brown, approaching black, with a thin, tan head. The aroma offers roast, bourbon, sweet malt, booze, brown sugar, and oak. The beer is sweet, with a healthy whiskey presence throughout. The body is thinner than expected, with moderately low carbonation. Overall, a decent brew. If the body was a bit thicker and the flavor less sweet, I would enjoy it more.

Received this in a very nice package from my man Roburg, thanks!

Appearance- Pours a nice rich, opaque black out of the bottle with a thin quarter finger dark brown head sitting on top. Head dies back to a thin sheet and then sticks around for the duration of the drink.

Smell- Interesting. I get the usual notes of rich roasted malt for a porter, along with some bitter chocolate. However, the rye and rye whiskey barrel aging really show through in a unique spicy characteristic. I still haven't had that many rye related beers, so my lexicon is a bit weak in describing the exact flavors. I really like it though.

Taste- Lots of rich roasted malts, chocolate, and perhaps the slightest coffeeish taste as per the nose. Again, the rye and rye whiskey really show through in a quite interesting spiciness that lingers throughout. I like it and the beer ends on a note of warming alcohol.

Mouthfeel/Drinkability- Mouthfeel is substantial for a porter and adequately carbonated. Drinkability is decent as well, though the alcohol evident in the finish takes a bit away from it the further you get it.

Overall, a very interesting and quite delicious take on a porter. Give this one a try for its uniqueness if you get the chance.

Tried this when it first came out a couple seasons ago, and it seemed like it needed time for the alcohol to mellow. Pours black into a small tasting glass. When backlit, it has a ruby glint. Initial head of foam has a creamy surface, leaving intricate drippy lace that resembles the logo of the metal band Darkthrone.

Sweet chocolate, minor touches of corn/sour mash from the barrel. Earth and spice from the Rye, hint of plum or other dark fruit, it mingles nicely with the smooth chocolate from the Porter end. Well integrated, it has a creamy finish, with a nice long aftertaste. The liquid itself seems slightly thin, a characteristic i've noticed with other Porters in the series. Otherwise it's pretty easy drinking, the alcohol seems to have bowed out gracefully from the forefront.

A - Pours near black with about a finger of dark brown head. Head dissipates pretty quickly leaving a good amount of lacing.

S - A lot of whiskey in the nose, vanilla, caramel, hints of currant and maple.

T - At serving temperature malts shine through i, caramel and bitter chocolate with a smooth vanilla presence. Some hints of berry and raisin. As it warms bourbon notes shine through, tastes from the wood become more apparent.

M - Fills the mouth, almost syrupy without being cloying. A very chewy, dense beer.

This is an awesome big beer. It has similar affects to a heavy quilt and flannel sheets. Unlike other barrel aged beers I never felt the whiskey presence to be overpowering.

mikesgroove is a dirty old man. Thanks to him and the Fight Club Project Mayhem BIF.

12 oz bottle poured into a standard shaker pint. Inch of dark tan head, though no real lacing. Color is black/brown. Very standard porter.

Smell is a rich chocolate malt with just a tingle of floral hops. Taste is dark coffee and burnt cocoa beans. I'm not sure where the rye is...oh wait, it's waaaay in the back. Rye bitterness is lighter than hops and sneaks in to add just enough extra to the finish. Interesting little twist.

Mouthfeel is creamy with a fine coffee ground grit. Smooth going down and easy to drink.

Nice appearance. Great roasty aroma with toffee and hints of whiskey. Dry porter-esque finish. Slightly oxidized.

Decent flavor profile; more imperial stout-like than portery. Oily body is plenty thick. A decent brew, but I'd choose FBS every time instead.

From a bottle into a snifter

APPEARANCE: Pours a one finger medium-thick tan colored head with good retention. Pours out dark brown and sits black in the glass with zero carbonation evident. Head slowly fades to a good wisp. A ring remains until the end and leaves dots of lacing down the glass.

SMELL: Roasted malts, bourbon and vanilla, as well as some oak from the barrels. Hints of milk chocolate in there as well. Mild nose, but very nicely put together.

TASTE: Roasted malts with some more bourbon and vanilla flavors. A good dose of milk chocolate as well, integrated nicely with the rest. The mild but lingering aftertaste is plenty milk chocolaty, with notes of bourbon and vanilla in there as well.

PALATE: Medium-full body and medium carbonation. Creamy smooth on the palate, goes down smooth and finishes slightly dry. Good feel.

OVERALL: Another good offering from Tyranena. Compared to the chipotle porter, I think I enjoyed this one a little more. A solid barrel aged imperial porter. Thanks for chance to try this retired brew oakbluff.

Served in a pint glass.

Light brown colored head. No retention or lace. Color is a dark brown.

Aroma: Chocolate, rye, roasted malts, some whiskey notes, and coffee. Pretty decent.

Taste: Roasted malts, coffee, rye and whiskey, oak, lots of malts, some grassy hops to balance it out, and a touch of heat.

Mouthfeel: hot, creamy, and very warming for the style. Medium bodied with a decent amount of carbonation, maybe a little low. Ends dry and malty.

Overall, a solid brew. I'd easily buy more of this. I really like what they did with this porter. Glad I got to try this one.
